..Which is why Hillary and Tenzing immediately climbed Everest again. Oh, they didn't? I meant, that Roald Amundsen got together a second expedition to go back to the pole. Or someone else did. Oops. Wrong again. Nobody went back for forty years...and in 1954, they arrived by airplane. Oh, but of course Lance Armstrong retraced his winning run of the Tour de France, just to make sure he actually won it. Dang. Wrong again. I'll keep working at it. I'm sure I'll find one.

[link to findarticles.com] Moscow paraded dummy missiles
Independent, The (London), Nov 18, 1998
MANY OF the huge strategic missiles displayed in Red Square parades during the Soviet era were only dummies, but they scared the West into an expensive response, a Russian magazine reported yesterday.
The Associated Press ("REPORT: RUSSIA USED DUMMY MISSILES," Moscow, 11/17/98) reported that the Russian magazine Vlast (Power) said on Tuesday that many of the strategic missiles displayed in Red Square parades during the Soviet era were only dummies. One such fake - GR-1, an acronym for Global Missile - showed during a May 9, 1965, parade prompted the US to build an anti-missile defense system costing billions of dollars. In fact, the Soviet Union had abandoned the GR-1 project long before the parade. It added that another two mobile ballistic missiles shown on the same day were also fakes, their test launches having been a complete failure. The article stated, "Foreign military attaches were scared to death, triggering panic in NATO headquarters. A huge international uproar followed, and only those who prepared this demonstration knew they were dummies." The magazine said that when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev said that the Soviet Union was making missiles "like sausage," the Soviets only had four intercontinental ballistic missiles. It added, "The myth about the Soviet missile superiority was convenient for both the Soviet leadership and the American military industrial complex, which was getting huge contracts." The article said that the Soviet Union did not reach parity with the US in land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles until 1970, and overall nuclear balance was attained only shortly before the 1991 Soviet collapse.

Report by Aleksey Baranov:
[link to www.cdi.org] "Parade of Fakes"
In the history of our Soviet reality two dates -- 9 May and 7 November -- were united by a common denominator: It was then that, every six months, we were shown the famed "shield of the Motherland." Over the granite paving passed dashing guardsmen, the latest tank models, and our pride and joy -- ballistic missile systems capable of destroying a target at any point on the globe.
Naturally, such events were unfailingly attended by foreign military attaches, the lawful representatives of foreign military intelligence services. They meticulously scrutinized the hardware on show, rightly believing that the USSR was showing the best available models on such holidays. Alas for them, they did not even suspect what a simple trick they had fallen for. Bearing in mind that at the time this method of obtaining military information was practically the only legal one (let us recall that the USSR did not take part in arms fairs), our "competent organs" decided on a grandiose deception. Namely, our counterintelligence officers "invented"... an intercontinental ballistic missile which never really existed!
This task was set following a thorough study of all characteristics which on close inspection could create the outward appearance of a missile. At that time there was universal fascination with so-called "multiple warheads," each of which could carry both a nuclear warhead and simply a target that was supposed to confuse the potential enemy's antimissile defense forces. When they got the data on the Soviet warheads' approximate volume and mass, foreign intelligence services were horrified -- the missile model shown on Red Square could carry several dozen potential Hiroshimas. They had nothing like it.
Our sources, who were employed in the USSR military-industrial complex at the time, claim that the effect of the dummy missile's demonstration was not confined to fooling the potential enemy and simply causing panic in its ranks. Foreign intelligence services started actively trying to obtain increasingly detailed information about the Russian "wonder weapon" and fell victim to meticulously prepared disinformation. Our intelligence service's operation resulted in an extremely important success -- the enemy started trying to duplicate the USSR's "achievement" and went down a scientific route subsequently declared fruitless.
It must be said that, according to the information obtained by us, the dummy missiles are still gathering dust in a Defense Ministry hangar. It is undoubtedly the right decision to preserve them. What if tomorrow somebody needs to dupe somebody again? But no -- this success of Soviet military intelligence's is worthy of museum immortalization.

For one the quality of images is completely different, probably even different photo equipment
who says that round thing with spokes is really the sun's reflection?
And I dó see spokes in the image supposedly taken on the moon.
The only possible strong point is the hexagonal shape, the rest is weak.

Although entertaining they are not scientists, they are TV people and they will produce a show consistent with TV programing.
I will point to their attempt to disprove Pyramid energy;
1)their preliminary research information was flawed
2)when an apparent possible proof appeared they pulled the experiment citing preparation problems.
3)resumption of the test was then cut due to time limits.
4) they then proceeded to claim that they had proven the assertions of pyramid power were untrue,However all they did prove is that their bias is stronger than truth.

Re: Myth Busters is doing a show on the Moon Landing.
Every object in every museum at the Smithsonian is full of such stories. The SIguide is just one new and exciting tool for sharing them with visitors. When James Smithson made his bequest to found the Institution, a place he envisioned as an "establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," he could not have foreseen how rapidly technology in museums would develop—from multimedia exhibitions to cutting-edge Web sites to the astonishing little SIguides, each of which has thousands of times more memory than the computer aboard Apollo 11—but is only about 1/250th of its size. Then again, forward-thinking scientist that he was, maybe he imagined it all.
My watch probably has more memory than the 1969 Apollo 11 computers. Considering the computing power available at the time, I think it's impossible to have landed a man on the moon, based on this fact alone.

You know why computers nowadays have more power? because they need it. Why do they need it? because programmers program around bugs instead of fixing them. Computers do not need all the power they have now.if done properly, Windows vista would weigh only about maybe 100 MB, it is multiple of gigabytes, totally unneeded.
