This will cause a bigger panic than a bank run, most people realize that paper money is a fraud and worth nothing when SHTF, as shown throughout history as in Germany during the war, inflation wiped out what little fake value it had, and right now in some of the African countries experiencing hyperinflation.
But precious metals have always been thought to be a fail-safe method of keeping wealth and have a commodity to barter with. Now those investors are about to get screwed out both their fake paper money and now what they thought were physical possession of the metal, their isn't enough metal to cover all the purchases... |

It's like all commodities, those that can, manipulate it so as to make it appear there is more demand than supply to make the extra profit.
But in this case of silver it seems it will turn to be a major case of fraud. Investors worried about the falling dollar and a potential bloodbath in the stock market have been turning their portfolios into holding more precious metals. The fraudsters are counting on the people NOT trying to take physical possession of the silver, so they are in essence selling silver that doesn't exist. |

The problem here is it is not supply and demand of silver or gold which is dtermining the price it is the supply of paper deals. Let me explain if I buy a contract of gold or silver in the commodities market I put up maybe 5 - 10% of the value of specie in that contract in return I get a slip of paper that says I own X amount of the metal. These contracts run by months which mean I have the PAPER rights for that period of time. At the end of the contract I get whatever the current value of the contract is or I have the right to put up the remaining outstanding amount on the contract and take physical possession. If anymore than 2% of commodities contract holders ever take possession I would be greatly surprised. But if say 30% suddenly decided to take possession the prices of these commodities would skyrocket because those selling these paper would then have to go out and buy in order to deliver. This is probably why you are begining to see a disconnect between physical possession prices and the commodities exchange priceing. In one case I'm getting a slip of paper with no intent of ponying up the money to convert and take possession. In the other I am physically attempting to buy and possess the real McCoy. It is relatively dumb to allow these paper transactions devoid of any reality to govern the actual price. THUS, IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE REAL PRICE OF THESE METALS TALK ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS INTO TAKING DELIVERY ON METALS CONTRACTS YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS TO THESE PRICES. GOLD $5000+ an OUNCE SILVER AT $80+n OUNCE. |

I really don't know the answer to that FAR. Historically speaking here in the US the amount of silver has historically outstripped the gold by a large percentage. That was the basis of the bimetalism argument in the early 1900's. The gold bugs were afraid that the introduction of silver along with gold would cause people to hoard gold and spend silver thus promoting the increase in price of silver. The theory here is that the more valuable metal takes a back seat to the less valuable. Sort of like what has happened with the introduction of paper money. It isn't until questions of real value arise that the metals will reflect their true value. |

Interesting chart and fully supports the theory that as paper money came into more and more favor in general the value of silver the favored metal due to availability drops and continues to decline. Gold on the other hand seems to rise could well be the Jewelry market or demand over the period in question. The problem is unless you have a period on a worldwide basis where faith in paper has dissappeared the chart is meaningless in that respect. The ultimate demise of the $ if it happens could well bring on such a test. A microcosym which you might look at is regionally what happened to the value of gold and silver when the collapse of the Weimar Republic took place and even Germany 1919-1928 that might provide some insight here. |

Basically what I said earlier, the game of "selling" silver and gold works for the scammers as long as enough people don't try to physically obtain the metal.
But with the dollar tanking more people want something tangible not just another piece of paper that will turn out to just as useless and a dollar bill. |

Corrrect OP but in order for the commodity contract holders to get screwed a sizeable percentage of them would have to demand delivery. Until that happens it is business as usual. |
