I've been searching for models of Katrina's path for a comparison.....
here's the best I can find.....and it looks like a similar path to Gustav....
[link to www.nasa.gov]
Someone more experienced with storm tracking might be able to look through the info on this link and see what the trends are.
I'd THINK that if there were enough similarities that the N.O. city officials might pre-empt an evacuation plan instead of waiting and sitting on their hands hoping FEMA will intervene again......
Let me know what I can do......

Have you guys heard about Dr. James McCanney? He had seen the last storm developing and the national Weather Service didnt, so he called radio stations to warn them of the development- I have not seen anything on his site about this one-- he states that predicting the direction of these storms is more of a guess than anything....and that some of these storms are "manufactured" by human origen. It is certainly good to be warned as far as possible in advance. Thanks, Ice for a heads up,bro....

Total bullshit and fear-mongering. This is what this false prophet said will come true in 2006:
Thirty days after the midwestern United States earthquake, the Lord sends His angels to warn HIs children to flee- and 7 days later, Russia and China press the buttons, launching a full thermonuclear attack on the United States. (This would equate to August 11, 2006 if what I mentioned above are true Quoting: Anonymous Coward 476073
Not true. Chuck never said that it would occur on August 11, 2006. It was someone without a full and complete understanding of his prophesies posted.
There are TWO earthquakes that will strike the midwest.
The first is the New Madrid which has a potential of manifesting this month if there is a massive hurricane. Buildings are damaged in St. Louis and Chicago
The second more devastating earthquake occurs approximately two years later and completely wipes Chicago with the water from Lake Michigan blowing through downtown Chicago at a height of fifteen stories.
Those that are smart in and around NOLA and the Gulf Coast will begin scouting locations in central Arkansas where Jesus said he would keep many alive. You need to go low tech as the prophesies have the economy collapsing completely a little over 60 days after the New Madrid quake.
In a sense this will make those displaced early the lucky ones. Those that remain in the large cities are doomed under the prophecies.
I am looking at what would be required. You can distill 16,000 gallons of ethanol to run a generator from 160 acres of milo. Vegetable gardens. Cows, chickens, goats. Some grain. Everyone has a gun and there would be a trained militia to respond to poachers. You will not be able to fight the Russian or Chicom invading armies and your hope would be to provide food in order to continue to exist. Solar panels and wind generators and even human power. Probably human labor in the fields. The question is can technology be applied in a manner that would make it more comforatable. The mode is survival and susatianability. |

Does anyone know the farthest a hurricane has moved in land from the gulf of Mexico before losing hurricane status? Have the states of Kansas or Oklahoma ever received hurricane strength winds? Just curious. Thanks! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71009
Not so sure about Kansas or Ok, but Katrina was still classified as Hurricane a pretty good ways inland - here's a map that shows Katrina still Hurricane - that spot where Kat is downgraded is a little northeast of Jackson.
[link to www.thestormtrack.com]
As a tropical storm, Kat reached as far as Tennessee border - It was downgraded to Depression near Clarksville, TN. I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. | Schmieder User ID: 324203 8/27/2008 1:02 PM | | Re: Gustav - Cat 3 in Gulf now! | Quote | I had lived on the southern US Atlantic coastline for many years. I kept a good eye on potential and active hurricanes out of interest and concern. I do not have any legal qualifications of weather forecasting however, I have much personal experience in understanding how hurricanes act/react.
Here is my analysis of the situation after staring at weather models, satellite videos and other professional forecasts.
Predicted landfall of Hurricane Gustav's eye:
Cameron Parish to Vermilion Parish, Western Louisiana.
Areas of effect:
Iberia Parish and Saint Mary Parish of Western Louisiana, will also suffer equal or greater conditions during and after landfall of the eye of hurricane Gustav.
Other low lying counties will suffer extensive flooding, especially those under sea level. Wind damage will be greatest within a 30 mile radius of landfall.
Casualties will be exceptionally low. This will be due to the fears among the general population from hurricane Katrina.
State and Local municipalities will be well prepared.
Prediction of hurricane action:
Tropical storm will form into a hurricane upon entering the Gulf of Mexico. It will become Hurricane Gustav Cat 2. The track will appear to be more westward at first. A front from the NW will slow down Gustav and encourage a more northern track. This northern track will have a curvature to it. Once Gustav reaches the center of the Gulf of Mexico, it will rapidly increase in strength to a Cat 5. Shortly before landfall, Hurricane Gustav will go through an Eye wall recycling which will reduce Gustav to a Cat 3 or 4 hurricane. Landfall will have a newly created eye and may have a chance to regain strength. General characteristics will be very large cloud cover, extensive rainfall amounts, moderate to extensive wind damage and push a 12-24 foot surge.
An extreme condition of a Cat 5+, wind speeds of 240+mph with tidal surge of 36-50 feet is not impossible though, unlikely.
Gustav will be a major player in the coming days. Oil facilities in the Gulf of Mexico are at great risk of extensive damages. Unfortunately, this could not come at a more worse time. Stress over the Georgian conflict will only add to this potentially catastrophic scenario. Oil prices may hit $190-$225 a barrel. |

Gustav blamed for 17 deaths:
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Gustav killed at least 17 people in the Caribbean as its squalls battered Haiti and the Dominican Republic, officials said.
A woman works in a street flooded by Tropical Storm Gustav on Wednesday in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Tropical Storm Gustav has been blamed for at least 17 deaths on the island of Hispaniola.
Forecasters warned Gustav, which was a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in Haiti on Tuesday, is likely to regain hurricane intensity.
The forecast shows Gustav entering the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday or Sunday as a Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph (179 kph). However, hurricane movements are erratic, and long-range forecasts are subject to change.
Pinchinat Pierre Louis, deputy director of Haiti's Civil Protection Directorate, said nine people were killed in the storm and another person was missing. There were unconfirmed reports of other deaths, including at least one man killed in a landslide, he said.
A mudslide in the Dominican Republic killed eight people, according to Col. Juan Manuel Mendez, the nation's director of emergency operations. The landslide happened in the Guachupita neighborhood in Santo Domingo, officials said. ....................
