Thank you for your rational response. Yes I am following the information on the track of this storm very carefully. I have many relatives in New Orleans. My daughter, her husband, and my three grandchildren live right in the middle of N.O. My sister and brother are there, along with several of my closest friends. I can tell you that some are speaking of this storm in a biblical sense, although not all. So I find any input welcome.
Actually ICE started this thread based on biblical prophecy - which he soon deleted, but it is a perspective that I find interesting based on the fact that it may have relevance to the force and strength of this storm.
I will entertain any idea at this point. |

 | | Re: Gustav - Cat 3 in Gulf now! | Quote | So here's my question:
I don't live in the immediate threat vicinity, I'm in the KC area. This whole GUSTAV threat is astounding to me. I'm both horrified at the prospect of another hurricane hitting where the damage is still not repaired from Katrina, and I'm VERY curious about it (probably in much the same ways as those who hear about and see tornado's are).
I cannot begin to fathom the destruction and the devastation that those who struggled through Katrina experienced, but I do know one thing...I believe we should have (as a nation) learned our lesson and should be mobilizing our strengths instead of focusing on our divisions ESPECIALLY when it comes to theological disputes!
FOR WHATEVER REASON...it APPEARS that the same area that was horribly affected by Katrina is in for another direct HIT! THIS CONCERNS ME!
I find it more than a little ironic that between sewing the seams and the final alterations in a bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses today, for a wedding here in KC on SATURDAY, THOUSANDS OF FOLKS SOMEWHERE in the Gulf area will be forced, once again, to evacuate....to decide what is most important to take with and what they should leave behind. While I make plans to go listen to music at the KC Irish Festival this weekend.....THOUSANDS will have to leave their homes......AGAIN! This makes my knees buckle and my heart heavy!
I want to know what TO DO! I don't want to spend precious time deliberating about prophetic or theological supposition! It DOESN'T MATTER!>>>>>THERE'S A HURRICANE ON THE WAY DOORKNOB!
If evacuations are already being planned....WHAT CAN THE PRIVATE SECTOR OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY DO TO HELP?
I've called someone I know who owns a U-Haul store to ask them to check into the possibility of additional vehicles being delivered last minute to the area. What other organizations or individuals are mobilizing to help? Since I'm not from the area....I HAVE NO CLUE what even CAN be done....or where....or when....or HOW? I feel a bit helpless.....and talk about New Orleans lifestyles that are less than mainstream don't help me understand what CAN BE DONE! This is NO TIME TO PICK A FIGHT!....even a RELIGIOUS ONE!
If individuals choose to dance naked in the flood waters, it's none of my business! If those who would like help evacuating, help those of us who don't have a clue what to do.....MAYBE we can actually do something that is productive, life and property saving, and eternally meaningful! |

CHECK THAT ACCUWEATHER LINK --I hope it shows--warnings for
Yucatan/Cancun -Cuba and all of the Mex/Tex-to Fla Panhandle. As someone said waaayy back in this thread.-if this gets in to the Gulf- without hitting land---WHOA NELLIE -to whoever is in the way---
Here is a good question to the prayers--If all are praying for the Hurricane not to strike where they are at-and it does hit--This must mean that people in the untouched places prayed harder? |

Gustav has slowed down to 4mph of forward speed. This is crucial to the track and now it can go either way. No one thought it would buy a ticket and camp overnight in the Islands and then pick up in the morning so tracks are indeed questionable right now. For now have made 5 Scenario tracks.
Scenario 1: Gustav follows the track, maintaining It's current direction and speed. This would bring it to the Yucatan.
Scenario 2: Gustav will have to speed up to 6-7 mph to take this track. From here, a ridge will build Northeast of there and take Gustav sharply North across Western Cuba and into near the Tampa Bay, FL area.
Scenario 3: Gustav will have to speed up to 8-10 mph to take this scenario. From this, it will follow all the tracks until Western Cuba. From there it will take a lot longer to make It's curve, hitting the Florida Peninsula.
Scenario 4: Gustav will have to reach 12-14 mph + of forward speed to get passed the point to turn it into Florida. If it can do this and stay constant; Gustav will hit New Orleans.
NHC Track: NHC track is taking Scenario 4 with a much faster forward speed than it is doing now. NHC must expect this to reach a fast forward speed, hitting New Orleans.
Scenario 5: If Gustav stays below 4 mph of forward movement it will drift WSW some over the next 24 hours, and pass over or just North of Jamaica. It will then keep moving slowly West until it is shoved Southwest toward Mexico. From there it will turn and hit the Southern Yucatan Peninsula.
OWS Track: Right now this is questionable because of Gustav's movement. It has surprised many people by pulling a Fay and sitting in one spot. It has disrupted forecasts and has been very annoying as was Fay. If Gustav starts moving, I would expect it to follow between Scenario 4 and Scenario 3. This takes it into the MS/AL coastal areas.

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 454051 8/27/2008 4:14 PM | | Re: Gustav - Cat 3 in Gulf now! | Quote | I firmly believe that most in the New Orleans area are prepared to leave this time. Most that were unable to leave last time have been relocated to Houston and other areas of the country. The population has been greatly reduced in that area, and the majority are self sufficient in that respect.
However, there are those who are weak and infirm, which I believe Governor Jindal has taken the reigns this time, and we will not see the massive loss of life as last time. He is making buses available to those with no transportation, or those unable to drive.
The problem as I see it is that there is a criminal element that will stay in town no matter what. It is a catastrophe of opportunity, and they will take advantage of that. That also happened last time. If they end up losing their lives then so be it. I have no pity for that mentality. |
| Kevin_Martin User ID: 425530 8/27/2008 4:16 PM | | Re: Gustav - Cat 3 in Gulf now! | Quote | The site is NHC's track and such. The NOAA models are just tools to show possible outcomes based on data fed into them.
At this time, Gustav is in a bad spot if it starts moving West at a faster pace and gains intensity. This is bad for the Gulf.
However, Gustav is not wanting to move much. This is throwing every single forecast or model in the garbage for the future track. Heck if it keeps up it will miss the Gulf completely and go elsewhere no one knows...
That's why I had to and was forced to do Scenarios. |
