Are they going to call for a mandatory evacuation in Gretna? I have friends there that will be pulling out Sunday if it stays on track. Heading to Houston.
Good grief I hope the interstates don't clog up like they did during Katrina. It took me over 20 hours to get to Houston. |

The city is bowl shaped and many areas are below sea level, but not all...water comes in, but can't drain out quickly. Has to be pumped out. But it wasn't always like this.
Some of it has to do with the way they continued to expand the city. Some of it has to do with the oil pipelines that run all through the land from the Gulf of Mexico. The cuts for the oil piplelines have allowed salt water to enter our fresh water marshes for years, thus killing off the marshes. Louisiana loses one football field of land every half hour. DOn't believe me, look it up. The coastlines (wetlands) that we are losing at an alarming rate use to be the city's buffer for storms. It broke up the storm surge and absorbed a great deal of the water. You can find many maps on the Internet that show what the State looked like before our coastline and wetlands began to erode away.
Here's something you may find interesting that I've cut and pasted: [link to landrieu.senate.gov]
As part of America's only Energy Coast, Louisiana produces a quarter of the nation's domestic oil supply and nearly a fifth of its domestic natural gas. But the pipelines, canals, refineries, and other onshore infrastructure so essential to our national energy security remain threatened by nature. To protect these assets, Louisiana receives less than one-tenth of one percent of the royalties shared with states.
Meanwhile, onshore energy-producing states share in the royalties generated by production on federal lands, recognizing the essential contributions these states make to the nation by hosting the activity - contributions identical to the work performed by Louisiana. Wyoming is expected to receive $1.3 billion this year under the program, while New Mexico's share is expected to approach $700 million.
New Orleans has been a major U.S. port/city since 1720. That's how the rest of nation received and shipped goods way back when. There are many many generations of families that have been here since precivil war.
But many no longer want to stay though.
All I can say is when they have to shut down the refineries and piplines because there's no one to work in this field, people will REALLY be screaming about the price of oil. It would take 10 years to replace the La. infrastructure for producing oil for this nation.... |

 | | Re: Gustav - Cat 3 in Gulf now! | Quote | Just an informational post from Houston Chron...
5:50 p.m. UPDATE: I asked senior hurricane specialist Rick Knabb why he didn't shift the official forecast westward this afternoon, and whether it was because he was waiting to see if the models persisted with their westward trend tonight. He was gracious enough to reply, writing:
That's part of the reason, but I've also been looking at run-to-run stability among the models, which leads me to be conservative about making changes. Consider that the individual models have bounced back and forth (left and right) during the past 24-36 hours.
Last night, for example, the GFS shifted dramatically to the right, then back left today (and I'm still left of its 120-h point). The consensus has remained more stable, and I'm not that far east of it this afternoon. If it stays where it is for a while or shifts farther west, maybe we'll shift west.
But it could also shift the other way, back to where the official track is (or even farther east). One can hope that the G-IV mission tonight will give the models more/better data and get them into better agreement and maybe there will be more run-to-run stability too.

Well, aren't you helpful ? Of course buildings and homes along the coast are built to withstand hurricanes, most of them. Most have been through several hurricanes already. It's the glass, trees, and what flies around in a storm that's most dangerous, that and the tornados.
Ice, looks like you're in the good seats there, other than maybe the river. Good luck to you and yours.
You know I'm a sky watcher, take my photos everyday. Yesterday, and today we've had some unusual skies. Just west, sunset, the clouds, or cloudships, created a circular pattern with wings/bands, counter clockwise. A warning maybe.
Two planes flew trails, just a few. Watched them fly back from their route, dark planes. |
