I am already hearing it today, the media outlets are calling this Katrina II. Models are pointing to New Orleans as a possible direct hit or Mobile Alabama hit early this Monday. Most media outlets will abandon Minneapolis/St. Paul for NO what will the Reps do?
I live in Mobile btw.Police are issuing 8 o clock curfew for all projects, preparing for Martial Law.I might stay but if it gets bad i'll leave,me and my crew already got batteries and camaras galore, working on backup food and cutting plywood.Someones in the target range.
We're all in the target range right now.
Good luck to you and your crew.

I've been shooting a little with those when I was serving, great fun.
So it is a name with quite powerful connotations... remember Sweden was a superpower once upon a time and there was many Gustavs among those kings back then.
Seriously though: we left that business centuries ago. Pretty harmless nowadays so why name potentially dreadful hurricanes after Swedish kings. I would rather like to have a more common-sounding American name like Zbigniew on this one... well maybe not.
Keep safe my friends. This is nothing to joke about. I wish you continue keeping your heads cool and hope the forecasts are greatly exaggerated. |

must be ignorant of the facts. Most of the people that lived in the area durning Katrina were low income families.. many without the means or a simply a place to evacuate to. The worst case senario didn't begin to take form until it was pretty much too late.. and what was thought to be the endurable alternative to evacuating for these poor people turned into the unbelievable.

Ivan was heading straight up Mobile Bay and made a turn to the East at the last minute and hit Pensacola. Katrina was also on a collision course with Mobile and made a turn to the west just before the eye made landfall in Waveland MS.
I've developed a passionate love affair with New Orleans over the years, that town seems to bring out the best in me. I would rather Gustav hit Mobile then watch New Orleans take a death blow from another Cat.3 or 4.
As far as leaving, I just don't know yet. I started a new semester at U. South Alabama last week and considering it took 16 hours to travel to Atlanta by car during Ivan, I really don't see the point in leaving.
Headin to Gulf Shores tomorrow after class is over to see how the surf is lookin. Hurricanes are pretty much the only time you can catch a good wave down in these here parts. |

Well, it appears our African-American friends have found yet something
else to be pissed about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila
Jackson Lee, of Houston ), reportedly complained that the names of
hurricanes are all Caucasian sounding names.
She would prefer some names that reflect African-American culture such
as Chamiqua, Tanisha, Woeisha, Shaqueal, and Jamal. I am NOT making this
up!
She would also like the weather reports to be broadcast in 'language'
that street people can understand because one of the problems that
happened in New Orleans was, that black people couldn't understand the
seriousness of the situation, due to the racially biased language of the
weather report.
I guess if the weather person says that the winds are going to blow at
140+ MPH, thats too hard to understand
I can hear it now: A weatherman in New Orleans says...
Wazzup, mutha-fukkas! Hehr-i-cane Chamiqua be headin' fo' yo ass like
Leroy on a crotch rocket! Bitch be a category fo'! So, turn off

That's true. It was said that the winds aren't what destroyed NOLA, but the blown up levees that flooded the place. People just weren't expecting that, so didn't leave. They were sitting ducks. It was a Cat 3 when it hit.
I went through Alicia, a CAT 3. I could take that again, although it is scary to go through. Live 30 miles from Galveston.

I have seen what the "lowly" Andrew did to Florida keys back then, was it 1998 or something, and I was lucky enough to have visited New Orleans before Katrina hit.

I'd prefer Gustav hit us 'dead on' than go west of us.
Worst of any storm is the east side flooding.
30' Katrina storm surge in Biloxi for example drowned people in attics.
I look at the empty lots that used to be houses and people and know what happened to both. It looked like a field of matchsticks where trees and houses used to be.
Evac from Mobile area flooding...

We don't even have to leave town.
I go to a house by USA to wait out Ivan, Katrina type big ones, and just go upstairs during the rest.

Looks like we have a few Mobile folks in this thread.
I'm only about 5 minutes away from USA, which happens to be the highest elevation in Mobile at 211 ft. (right around the Mitchell Center) I'm not worried about the flooding, but rather my house which is now about 30 + years old and not very well constructed. That and the dozen or so pine trees in my neighbors yard which looked like they wanted to snap during the 30 mph winds we got last week from Fay.
Hope you folks stay safe regardless if you decide to haul ass or ride it out. |

That evacuated people would include ... criminals never occurred to city officials.
They thought people would cooperate with survival as a common goal.
Never imagined supplies of food and water would be taken over by thugs, and sold or traded for sex, or that rapes and murders would occur among evacuees.
Naive and racist to not accept the facts and deal with unpleasant truths.

Gustav Means "staff of the Goths", derived from the Old Norse elements Gautr "Goth" and stafr "staff". This name has been borne by six kings of Sweden, including the 16th-century Gustav I Vasa.

I would hope that most are leaving ...EXACTLY like they did for Katrina. Thugs and poor stayed behind.
La has a new governor and he's already got everything in place.
Bobby Jindal (Governor)) has also ordered buses that hold 30,000 people as well as air and train.
A simple google search would have told you all of this info. if you'd bothered to browse thru the thread.
