MIAMI (Reuters) - A new tropical depression formed over the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday and threatened to become the eighth storm of the already busy 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
"The depression will likely become a tropical storm later (Thursday) and could reach hurricane intensity within three days," the Miami-based hurricane center said.
The center's computer models predicted the depression would become an "intense hurricane."
If it becomes a tropical storm, it would be named Hanna.
Forecasters said the depression was moving toward the west-northwest at about 5 mph (8 kph). It was expected to turn toward the northwest later Thursday, which will take it well north of the Leeward Islands during the next 24 hours, the center said.
The depression's maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph (55 kph).

A GRADUAL INTENSIFICATION IS FORECAST IN AGREEMENT WITH THE SHIPS
INTENSITY MODEL...AND THE DEPRESSION WILL LIKELY BECOME A TROPICAL
STORM LATER TODAY AND COULD REACH HURRICANE INTENSITY IN 3 DAYS.
THE HWRF AND GFDL MODELS ARE MORE AGGRESSIVE...PREDICTING AN
INTENSE HURRICANE.

Watch for the SW bend at the end this is where things could be VERY threatening to Bahamas and SE FL and then the GOMEX.
Several days away likely 8 - 10 but this is going to be a East Coast threat with a building and blocking high pressure ridge solidfying itself.
Also watch the Bay of Campeche near MX as another system could threaten S Texas. This system is not related to Gustavo. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 362930 8/28/2008 1:15 PM | | Re: Hurricane Hanna- forcast to be a major hurricane and hit S Carolina | Quote | although historically a run up the east coast is not unprecendented the synoptic environment meaning the atmospheric conditions such as High Pressure are forecast to build over the next several days. A TUTT low is currently effecting Hanna to the north west but as it moves away the High will likely push Hanna to the SW then likely W towards S Central or S Eastern FL if the conditions remain as they are forecast to be...important to note that if high pressure builds it will act as a blocking limiting northward progress and enhancing westward progress
see imagery link below the swirl to the left of Hanna is the TUTT low that is actually hindering her development, it will likely move away and Hanna will be picked up by the building high ridge and have the environment to really blossom into a major cane. definitely an east coast and possible GOMEX threat in about a week or so.

Actually, it isn't forecast to be an intense hurricane. It is believed that sheering from Hurricane Gustav will prevent Hanna from becoming very strong. Current models suggest category 1 by next week. It depends on where Gustav goes.
"The track for Hanna is fairly uncertain for Sunday and Monday. Some models push the storm out to sea. Forecasters say Hanna should be in an area of weak steering currents by the Labor Day weekend.
By Tuesday, winds flowing outward from the top of Gustav could cause some shear for Hanna and limit its growth. The current forecast has Hanna's winds topping out above 80 mph Sunday before the shear from Gustav slightly weakens the storm."
But this storm will still need to be watched since the forecast models do push it towards FL towards the 2nd half of next week. |
