ok i'll start by saying i'm a former pawn broker so this kinda stuff is old hat, but when i'm on the net i'm constantly checking craigslist and cross referencing things that pop up w/ ebay's completed listings.

i have 7 different gmail accounts all forwarding to one main account. if something pops up im interested in and seems priced about right based off of ebay's completed listings, i start by emailing lowball offers from the various accounts, wait on response to guage the tone of the response and then if need be wait a sufficient non-obvious amount of time and email from a different account based on any counter offer, or if i'm told to piss off i factor this new info into the equation.

make sure to not be a jerk and offer $100 on a fender strat, make a competitive offer on the lowest end of the spectrum that you would consider reasonable for someone in a financial jam to potentially find tempting. you'll find that people will say no way that's too low, but 3 days later they'll email you back and offer it to you at your asking price or at least somewhere in between, this is why it's important to not insult them w/ a ridiculously low offer that noone in their right mind could accept no matter what the financial circumstance... ie. it's a numbers game at a certain level.

if you have an item you are looking to sell or if there's something you are unsure about the market value of, you can create a fake craigslist posting (make sure to have several craigs accounts because craigs will block you if you try to list a watch in one town and the same watch in the town over, you need multiple accounts to efficiently easily list the same item in various locations, or to take the time to alter the syntax of your listing so it bypasses craig's spam filter)... you'll get responses on your craigs listing just basic market research.

my progress so far since i've begun doing this a few months ago:

cervelo dual triatholon bike- cost $800, sale $1150
cannondale caffeine 4 29er- cost $600, sale $850
yamaha flute- cost $40, sale $230!!!
meade backpack telescope- cost $60, sale $150 (30 minutes ago)
Tag heuer kirium 18k watch- cost $300, pending sale $600
Tag heuer forumula 1-cost $250 (1 hour ago) forcast sale, $475

just a few items i've turned, have another yamaha flute at auction, bought $120... expecting at least $200... these yamaha flute are severely underpriced in the papers from time to time.

anyway... not big bucks obviously but if you're already surfing around on GLP it's a fun hobby if you're an ebayer at all.

and the thing is, the worse the economy gets the more deals that should pop up... but just make sure to realize selling things will also be tougher.

i know the economy getting crushed... two days ago i'm at a starbucks buying some car audio equipment from a guy and i always try to ask why they're selling if they're at all conversational... he was like, well they've cut back my hours he was working at some bodyshop. it's only gonna get worse i'm afraid over the next 18 months, but i've been in situations where i've had to pawn items that i never got back years ago but at the time the little money i got was more valuable than the item so it was worth it to me. and i'm afraid that's gonna be more and more the case w/ a lot of people.

I'm selling some of my books on Amazon.com. Then I go to garage sales on weekends, find books, and list them. Made $100 bucks in a week. Hey it won't pay the rent but it will buy enough toilet paper to wipe our butts.

I've learned whether the economy is good or bad, meth and crack still sell well.

there's also a big demand for arson nowadays...insurance money always comes easy. And the best part, there's next to no overhead(okay, it's gotten more expensive since the price of gas has increased, but still...), the hours are good, and you work when, and as much you want.

What?

I used my entrepreneurial spirit. I found a need, and filled it.

These things were happening and will happen in any event. What's wrong with showing some capitalistic inventiveness? I brought a professional business ethic to businesses which have none. And as a result reaped a windfall increase in income, and brought standards to ventures which had none. Hell, we may even form an Arsonist's alliance. We'll have health care, dental, legal aid, and a 401k. It's a great untapped profit center.
Picture it; Rich folks have businesses and buildings they can no longer afford, and we offer a cost effective solution. Everyone benefits. They paid insurance premiums for years, now they can get a return on their investment. And, best of all, our jobs will NEVER be outsourced to India.

By the way....

You mean you ACTUALLY took this seriously?
It HAD to be a joke...The time when I wrote this would have been prime time for meth and crack sales. And, at this time of the night, this is the beginning of the arsonist's day. As a business person, I wouldn't want to miss prime working hours....

Geeeze.... you gotta stop hangin' out with dumb people; it's starting to rub off on ya'
