microsoft finds it not kosher....

You want a SEALED RETAIL copy, so that way you have nothing to worry about.......

Sigh, if you expect to pay full price. ($300USD)....

Since you have 98 you ought to be able to upgrade.

Linux isn't secure enough for a lot of the websites I have to sign into. (for work, banking, etc.) Already tried that since my husband uses Linux on his computer.

And you are saying that Windows is MORE secure?
Now that is hilarious!

Re: A question regarding Windows XPQuote

You should get WinXP SP2 (Service Pack 2) at least. I have not installed SP3 or downloaded it. It may also depend on what the camera states it needs also like - Windows XP SP2 Home Edition for its software to install correctly. Microsoft is making it so you probably have to activate it once it is installed. Although that may not be a problem, it still means getting on the Internet or doing it so many days. I would not buy it used as an OS although it should be supported till 2012 I think. Win98SE is no longer supported although I had it on my old computer and it works fine for the most part.

So, a cheapy new computer may be better (and with Windows XP SP2 already installed on it) but I would not exactly get a new computer with Vista on it. So far there has been too many driver problems with it, and although that may be better now, it may not be either. Depends on the camera and what it will work with.

Upgrading cost less for the OS but the old OS has to be installed correctly and all of that. Even installing a new OS can be a hassle but usually it some driver or something that needs to be replaced.

Otherwise, I don't think you can really get a used OS anymore, that would be supported if it even ran on your computer. Microsoft perhaps wants too much money and the company does not really own your computer.

Lawyers in some instances should be banned from practicing law, since some people with businesses think that they own everything when they do not.

If the computer is not all that fast then let me tell you that Windows XP is slow, and a newer computer may be better for your camera and you.
I bought a simple 3.0gHz computer with an older Pentium 4 processor and it still handles everything I need it for (computer games and my older camera). I did buy more memory for it and a different video card for it, but still for the price, I think I can keep it for the next 5 years, and it already is going on 2 years old. Well, till 2012 or so perhaps, if I feel like not getting another computer. (I also have old computer games and use Dosbox free software to play the ms-dos games with. Works fine, and some old games may still be better than some newer games and some of those can be downloaded for free (usually maybe less the music of the game perhaps) like at a place if it is still up like - Home of the Underdogs website.)

Ah, that would be here, and also just Google Search the name "Home of the Underdogs" - I think they have old educational programs also I saw in one of the links from the search. (?)

Well, there is a lot on the Internet that can be searched for, but Windows XP is kind of slow and needs more memory to make it function well. Once you get used to it, you may even kind of like it. Still like Windows 98SE if you want with the Classic Desktop, but has more options trying to make it more compatible with older software and such. My old software exactly did not work quite like it did with an older OS like Win98SE or Win2kProf like I still have on my old computer, but then I don't use the software all the much anyway, and again it is Microsoft software, and I can still use my old computer if I must. Maybe some day newer software will be bought, but it all costs too much for me, except for some newer software I bought that was cheaper to buy. Who's paying for all this electronic crap anyway. It is a convenience and also maybe a headache also, and fun and all of that, but I still only have the 24 hour day still.

Re: A question regarding Windows XPQuote

Look around for any old computer cases and check for a
sticker with an XP license. You can usually pick them
up for around $10 from some computer suppliers. Install
XP (any copy you can find) and use that license.

a creative psalm of brotherhood. If this is to be achieved, man must evolve
for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.
The foundation of such a method is love."

Re: A question regarding Windows XPQuote

Mopar, I had 98 and used the XP upgrade. It was easy.
XP runs like a champ, and my puter ran faster.
I highly recommend it.

I've done a couple of computer cleans. Reformatted, installed the 98 again, and the XP upgrade again. Easy.
Upgraded to the SP3, no problems.

Re: A question regarding Windows XPQuote

Don't give up on '98, you may be able to find a driver that will help your camera work with it.

I've bought hardware in the past that said it was only compatiable with XP and up, but got it to work just fine on '98 with the right driver.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 493045

You are spitting against the wind trying to keep 98on top of newer drivers. I threw in the towel 3 years ago and went with XP. Got tired of chasing down new drivers every time 98 hiccuped (printer, camera driver & DLL problems). It is a never-ending battle.

What are the specs of the computer you want to upgrade to XP on? Do you have at least 512 MB of ram?
