Lawmakers will hire someone within a week to investigate whether Governor Sarah Palin abused her power in firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. The legislative council approved 100,000 dollars for the investigation that will find out whether Palin was angry at Monegan for not firing an Alaska State Trooper who went through a messy divorce with Palin's sister.
On Monday afternoon, the Joint Legislative Council, filled with Republicans and Democrats, voted 12 to 0 to formally call for an investigation against Governor Palin in a manner—that they are stressing—will be unbiased and done in a timely fashion.
Legislators approved hiring a special investigator to look into the controversial firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan was fired two weeks ago without explanation and has said he was pressured by the governor and her staff to fire a trooper who was once married to Palin's sister.
Accusations have risen that Monegan was fired for his refusal to fire trooper Michael Wooten. The council's intent is to investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of Monegan and potential abuses of power and improper action by the Governor and her administration.
"It is the intent of the legislative council that the investigation be professional, unbiased, independent, objective, and conducted at arms length from the political process," said, Senator Kim Elton, a Democrat from Juneau.
The council's intent is to investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of Monegan and potential abuses of power and improper action by the governor and her administration.
"I think what it really gets down to is after the comma, add potential abuses of power and improper actions is really what we are looking at or at least proposing to look at?" said Representative John Harris, a Republican from Valdez.
Governor Palin has denied the accusations, saying she replaced Monegan to go in a new direction. And although she doesn't think an investigation is needed, she welcomes the questions.
The council went through a detailed meeting to make sure the process is done in a timely manner with accurate results.
"We will get from this is," said Senator Hollis French, a Democrat from Anchorage, "no evidence of wrong doing, some evidence of wrong doing, clear evidence of wrong doing, that will come back to us."
"At that point the body has to make the decision: 'Is this evidence strong enough to proceed on or not?'"
"I think it should be made very clear because there have been conversations about personnel matters that the issues really that we are dealing with here are not the termination of the public safety commissioner," said Harris.
Legislators hope that during this investigation that the politics are left out of the mix, which can be hard for government officials.
"What really remains is the most significant hurdle," said Representative Jay Ramras, a Republican from Fairbanks. "Are those professionals going to feel compelled to be subpoenaed before they will speak candidly about what they know?"
Senator French is the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman and is in charge of hiring the investigator. He says he has a short list of candidates and that the investigation should be finished within a few months.

Five reasons why Sarah Palin is a laugh-out-loud choice for VP
Seriously? Sarah Palin for VP? It's one thing for millions of voters to put forward a sitting senator as a possible commander in chief, but for John McCain to hand-pick a first-term governor of a tiny state is bizarre. Here are five reasons why, if she is the pick, this is a huge mistake:
1. There goes McCain's best argument.
He cannot say Obama is not ready but she is. Obama started organizing his campaign for president the same month she was sworn in to lead the third-smallest state's government.
2. She has no base of support.
Obama won his senate seat with 3,597,456 votes, that's more than five times the population of Alaska. He has won more than 18 million votes in a long, tough primary that tested him and prepared him. How has she been tested? She lost her first bid for statewide office, then won the governor's office with 114,697 votes, not a majority, but enough to take office. And apparently, enough to set her up for the Oval Office.
3. The "woman card" will backfire.
She's no Hillary Clinton. And this is such an obvious ploy. It would be different if she were known to anyone or qualified or something.
4. Alaska, a corrupt hinterland.
Yes, she is a hard-nosed, tough reformer. But the McCain campaign will have to deal with the fact that Alaska seems like a foreign land as corrupt as Louisiana. It's longtime senator will stand trial smack dab in the middle of this campaign season, and McCain may have to vote to remove him from office. Yes, they can spin it that she is someone cleaning up the mess up there, but what Americans realize is that they don't know much about what goes on up there. Will they be comfortable with her?
5. Was this McCain's choice?
It seems clear that McCain wanted to go with Lieberman but was talked out of it by the right wing of his party. Rove admits calling Lieberman to ask him to pull his name out. Bush lost his way because he never stood up to Rove et. al. McCain is headed down the same path.

However, I really don't think it's going to matter one way or the other who McCain chooses.
McCain is an angry old man who is also an admitted adulterer. How could the the Bible-belt Christians justify voting for him?

I simply cannot believe that he would pick a woman who has been governor for a year and a half and expect her to be in the line of succession if McCain dies in office.
She's younger than Obama, and has NO experience in national or foreign politics.
I suspect the debate between her and Biden will be a slam dunk, embarrassing wash-out. |

Just got off the phone with a well-placed politically good friend who happens to be working with the Republican campaign and she tells me they are "STUNNED" over McCain's stupidity.
She also said this announcement seems to have taken the wind out of the sails of some of Mcbush's arguments, i.e., experience, knowledge of foreign affairs, etc., and the people in the office are more than somewhat disgusted and now depressed over Palin as vp.
There ya have it, folks.

Okay I just found the reason she is being investigated. It is for dismissing the Commissioner of Public Safety for failing to fire a State Trooper, who happened to be her ex -brother-in-law. This trooper had threatened to kill Palin's father, tasered his 11-year-old stepson, and violated game laws. The Commissioner was offered another position which he turned down, but the State Trooper was given a 5 day suspension.
Hmmm I guess it is okay to taser an 11 year old child.
I say hurray to Sarah Palin for standing up to these idiots.
Palin has been a champion of stemming government corruption. "She was brought to statewide attention because of her whistleblowing on ethical violations by state Republican Party leaders." |

I agree, Democratic supporters can not get complacent. To be honest, I think, although political in nature, John McCain just made an extremely risky gamble, but a gamble nonetheless that somewhat brought both the campaign back to square one. All tied up 0-0. The next few months should be interesting. |

This is only one side of the story, Palin's side. If her side is indeed based on fact, I believe she will get a free pass on it. But, please think carefully, this is a very slippery slope. We have courts of law to determine guilt. |
