Weird fungus, can anyone identify? It's a Mold. Thanks everyone! Much appreciated!
I've been fighting a weird fungus in part of my lawn. I grew up a country girl, and I've NO idea what this is. It starts out with the top looking puffy/fuzzy yellowish-white, doesn't seem to have roots, and when taken out seems a bit slimy like animal vomit. (Note: if you have a queazy stomach, don't see the picture or go any further) I'll stress, when pulled out when it's first starting, it seems to be starting on the tips of the grass. If a little of the fungus is left, it doesn't seem to reroot in that area. If I spray it off with water, it doesn't reroot in the downslope direction.

It first showed a few weeks ago, I cleaned it and didn't see anything for almost a week. The second time, I missed it the morning it appeared while still wet and when I tried to pull it out later in the day. It'd started to root and had the brown spores that the puff-ball type of mushrooms spread.

I thought it was gone and just showed again almost a week after the later time. Does anyone know WHAT this is? and HOW do you fight it? It's only stayed in one of my lawns, so far. The other 2 are separated by concrete walkways and it hasn't gotten there yet. Frankly, I just want it gone. It is seriously GROSS!

The picture is the fungus after I removed it from the lawn.

vinegar...mild acid solutions not only kill the fungus, but the mycelium(roots) as well.....the largest organism on the planet is a fungus such as this one that occupies in the neighborhood of 400 acres....pretty sure it's in the pnw...been so long since i read about it that i cant really remember though....

Geogal, you can also use "garlic tea" on the slime mold. Just grind up a few cloves of garlic in fresh water, strain that, and reserve the "tea."

Or you can use hydrogen peroxide (right out of the medicine cabinet).

Another option, or something you can do in addition to the garlic tea and/or peroxide, is to sprinkle the area with horticultural cornmeal (not regular food grade cornmeal).

The Vinegar,Mild acid should work..However..

I had something similar a few years back..I didnt ask around for any help or advice so this may be wrong, but it worked for me.

I got a spray bottle and put Bleach and Water in it..Maybe about 10% Bleach..Sprayed it on the areas a couple times over a couple days.

Killed the Fungus and it never came back..It kind of stressed out the yard, but it lived. At the time I didnt care I just wanted it Dead even if I had to reseed.

Peroxide does a sorta similar thing as bleach, to a degree. maybe a 3% solution of bleach would still do the trick but not harm the lawn??? But, agreed. I just want to get rid of it! I'm wondering if the bleach/peroxide treats the base problem, the bacteria that the mold feeds off of?

bleach is of course the ultimate club for this, but after consideration, i opted for something a bit less traumatic to her lawn...lol no need for an elephant gun when hunting mice....

Thats why I said Bleach..

It started to spread and it had to Die.

Everyday when I got home from work for about a week I looked at my yard and it just kept growing and growing and I didnt have the time to mess around..And the Bleach killed it.

Then I was Happy again. hf

never had a problem with mold or fungus till i used scotts weed and feed on my yard, it turned nice and green and everything was fine.about a week or 2 later after cutting the grass and collecting the yard waste, i put it in a pile(in a place where it got wet) and a few days later it ws all stinky and moldy fungusy and got fungus all over the place, all over trees ect, i was guessing it was from the ferts...

i killed it with milk, i only had to treat it once and it went away, also i cut back all the trees ect so the sun would cook it/dry it away

LOL! I was gona start with the garlic tea, then work my way up. I'm in need of getting more garlic anyhow, plus it really seems the least harassing on the vegetation or bug/animal life. Thanks again, Ambiguity!

So far, it hasn't gotten that far. It's just 1 to 3 patches between 1 in diameter and 3 in diameter showing about 1 time a week. If it goes nuts and I can't get it, then bleach the stuff. Thanks again, Gatekeeper!
