Thursday, the FBI confirmed to CBS13 they are now running laboratory tests on some items that may link a suspect to the killer.
The evidence was given to the FBI by a Pollock Pines man who also claims he recently found the disguise worn by the Zodiac Killer during one of his attacks.
"The identity of the Zodiac Killer is Jack Tarrance. He's my stepfather," says Dennis Kaufman.
Eight years of Dennis Kaufman's life has been consumed with attempting to prove the only father he's known since he was five-years-old is none other than the Zodiac Killer.
"This a handwriting comparison I did," says Kaufman, showing handwriting samples claiming to be his father's and the Zodiac Killer's, which bear a striking similarity. Similarities Dennis says are no coincidence.
"The composite is a dead ringer," says Kaufman, showing composite sketch of the killer next to his stepfather's -- a resemblance that is undeniable between pictures of Jack Tarrance and descriptions of the zodiac.
Dennis also claims his stepfather, in a taped phone conversation, indirectly admitted being the zodiac killer.
"If I wrote a book and said I think my stepfather is the Zodiac Killer they wouldn't believe me," says Kaufman.
Jack Tarrance died in 2006. Dennis claims that while going through Tarrance's belongings, there were disturbing findings including a knife still covered with what could possibly be dried blood.
"It could be a knife he barbecued with or a knife he murdered someone with," says Kaufman.
Jack also left behind rolls of undeveloped film. Dennis plans to hand over the film to the FBI. On one of the rolls Dennis did develop, there were numerous gruesome images.
"Appeared to be people who were murdered," explains Dennis.
Just recently, Dennis remembered his stepfather asking him several times about the old PA system which led Dennis to take it apart.
"When I first opened it up that did affect me. My heart skipped a couple of beats when I saw it," he says.
The material folded and tucked inside, Dennis believes, may unmask the zodiac killer.
"It was a black hood with a zodiac on it," Dennis explains.
Dennis holds up a black hood with the zodiac sign on it. It's similar to the hood worn during the vicious 1968 Lake Berryessa attack, which is the possible key evidence connecting his stepfather to the killings. He also believes there are dozens more victims which were never linked to the Zodiac, including Dennis' own mother who, he claims, was suffocated.
"She sat there and told me Jack was trying to kill her and I didn't listen. I can only imagine how she felt. Imagine how scary that would be. That is what kept me going this whole time," says Dennis.
The FBI confirmed they are running DNA tests on items that Dennis gave them.
Dennis says there are postage stamps sent to him by his stepfather. Authorities are trying to get DNA profile of Jack Tarrance to compare to A DNA profile of the Zodiac Killer. The FBI told CBS13 they could get those results back any day.

FBI Gathers DNA Evidence From Zodiac Subject's
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― New developments have emerged tonight in the FBI investigation to unmask the Zodiac Killer.
"He was my dad," said Charles Tarrace, son of Jack Tarrance. "Either way, he was a good dad."
Love doesn't eliminate doubt. Charles Tarrance is the biological son of Jack Tarrance -- the focus of the FBI's investigation.
"I want the answer of whether it's yes or no," said Charles, who is turning evidence over to the FBI.
Charles is turning over items that once belonged to his late father. These objects could provide a DNA link to serial killer. Those objects include inhalers, a toothbrush, and a comb.
"It has his hair on it," said Charles.
"It's an open investigation; all I know is that they [FBI] want more items…that is what we're doing," said Dennis Kaufman, Jack Tarrance's step son.
Dennis Kaufman, Charles' half brother, built a strong enough case against his stepfather to pique the FBI's interest.
"I'm glad he's helping me," said Dennis. "It's a relief because for years we didn't talk because of this thing."
Charles says his father never told him he was the Zodiac, but there are episodes he can't explain, like once in a hospital. "I was wheeling him down a hallway, he was acting like he was shooting people…he was laughing saying 'ha, ha, Zodiac'."
The two brothers are now working together to find out if their father hid a horrifying family secret.
Charles says he doesn't know if his father was the Zodiac Killer. "I don't know…I can't answer that," said Charles.
There is still no timeline on when the FBI plans to wrap up their investigation. |

It was a Norwegian immigrant turned multi- millionaire auto magnate.
He remains alive, lives in the same house he did in the 60's and 70's and was asked to provide a DNA sample in 2002 which, like all others, comes up as "undetermined".
Most researchers believe the DNA being used comparitively, was cross contaminated by multiple allelial samples.
His name is Kjell Qvale.

Or this Jack guy...
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

It looked fake, like something made from a pair of stockings. Nothing like the hood described in vivid detail by Hartnell. The whole story had a creepy vibe of the stepson wanting to slam the stepdad for some reason, like getting final payback.
As with all the other suspects propped up over the years, it doesnt match the evidence. |

Qvale was only originally proposed as a suspect by an investigative reporter who never named him due to threat of lawsuit.
He approached the authorities and built an extremely complex circumstantial evidence based case against him and ABC- 20/20 was set to air a show in 2002 revealing the information until Mr. Qvale launched an expensive blitz through his EXTREMELY well connected and financially dependant group of politico friends and voila.........
I discovered his identity after much research when I came accross his picture and because of his ancestry and STRIKING resemblence to the composites.
I am working to expose the case and the man's identity despite his threats of legal action as I feel it is only libel and slander if it is not true.
FACT: Dead Ringer for the composites and physical description
FACT: Was asked by the FBI for exemplars of handwriting and was a resident of Presidio Heights, living mere yards from where Stine was shot and killed
FACT: Was asked to provide a DNA sample by ABC and before results were made public....sued ABC killing the show and threatened to sue anyone who ever discussed the episode
FACT;
Was in Riverside CA the night of the Bates murder( supposed Z victim)
FACT:
Was in the area and stopped by police and questioned the night of the Stine( Cabbie) murder
FACT:
Was the first US Air Force WWII pilot to claim to have witnessed an "extraterrestrial UFO" in July 1947 exactly 20 years before the Lake Berryessa murder of Darlene Ferrin.
FACT:
Sold a type 34 1961 VW Kharman Ghia as the exclusive american distributor for VW in the 60's.
Only 17 to 177 were ever manufactured for North American use in the 60's.
Bryan Hartnell had a type 34 Kharmann Ghia the night he and Ferrin were murdered one of only 2000 in existance throughout history and MUST have bought it at Qvale's dealership as he was THE ONLY ONE selling them until 1974.
Speaks "Old Norse" and undertsnads Runic figures and the Runic alphabet as well as Norse Eddas( poems/myths) all traits associated to the Zodiac.
FACT: Lived in the UK from 1970-74, the only period of known inactivity in America during the Zodiacs letter writing era.
There is much more...he is 89 and will die before he can sue me or anyone and I expect he has left a "time capsule" as most serial killers do. |

justsomeguy User ID: 693789 6/3/2009 6:57 AM | | Re: Zodiac killer found by his stepson? | Quote | Hi-
You have to take what Chris/ZResearcher says with a grain of salt. I developed the man named on this site as a person of interest in 1999 and have done over ten years of intense research on his past. (BTW, my circumstantial case is not all that "complex." Gareth Penn, yes. Me, no.) I am very disapppointed that Chris chose to name the person in question here. I hope the webmaster might see fit to remove his name from the thread. To correct a misstatement of fact about my background, I am not an investigative reporter (or any type of reporter, for that matter). I'm just an average guy who had a unique idea that led me to this person in 1999.
Some of the "facts" cited on this thread are not what they appear to be, although the ACTUAL facts that pertain to this man that I have uncovered over ten years are EXTREMELY intriguing to many people who are a lot smarter than I am about criminal cases.
Chris cites a lot of fractured facts. For instance, in the Lake Berryessa police report, which is available on the Net for all to see, it is clearly stated that victim Bryan Hartnell was driving a 1956 Karmann Ghia. The "special" model Ghia described by Chris did not go into production until several years after 1956. (This is just unacceptably sloppy research when the stakes are this high, IMO.) Therefore, it is impossible that Hartnell was driving such a car. When I wrote to Chris to get an explanation or a retraction of this assertion, he never replied to me. Also, the ABC show was not quashed or suppressed. It aired on October 17, 2002 and it cleared this man against the available DNA (which has now come under heavy scientific fire as being very questionable for reasons too lenghty to go into here--see my website below for a discussion). As for his using his wealthy friends to influence the content of the show, I'd like to see Chris produce some proof of this. This is hinting at some sort of conspiracy of the elite in SF, which would (I am certain) be of immense interest to law enforcement, as well as to me. Does Chris even have a source for this seemingly wild accusation? I've certainly never stated or implied in my ten years of investigation that there is a "conspiracy" of wealthy men to cover up the truth. There is also no proof other than inference that htis man knows the Eddas. Where can I read that?
Throwing out factoids with no substantiation or source will not move things forward and can only hurt the situation.
Chris did find an interesting fact that I had missed and he communicated it to me privately in March. I am appreciative of that email. But I do not appreciate the fact that he is posting things that do not appear to be true and at the same time naming this man publicly, something which I've avoided doing for ten years now. Maybe if Chris lived in the US and were subject to our laws he'd be a bit more careful about what he says.
