Yeah! This book really floored me, aaron. It gave substance to the theory that an observer affects the outcome of an experiment. And that words REALLY DO have power to affect the environment. Good choice!

Read a really good book today called Why Do I Keep Doing That? By Dennis Wholely, in it was the following;

Yoga Technique - to break a bad habit

Make 2 lists. One lists all the bad things about the habit. The second lists all the good things that will happen to you when you break the habit. You read both lists once a day. That is all you do. You do not need to think about breaking the habit. You do noth have to guide yourself into controlling your cravings. You live normally, indulging in the “evil” you are attempting to expunge. There is no forcing of will, there is no guilt or blame or any other consequence or any other consideration required. All that is required is that you read the lists each day. All you are doing is storing information. Let your subconscious do with that, as it will.

Example Lists

Bad Things About Cigarettes
1. Stained teeth
2. Smelly fingers
3. Bad breath
4. Clothes stink
5. Very expensive
6. Cancer
7. Shortness of breath
8. Have to smoke outside
9. People think I’m weak
10. Filthy ashtrays

Good Things About Quitting Smoking
1. Cleaner hair
2. Breathe easier
3. Less tired in the morning
4. Saving money
5. Feel livelier/motivated
6. House doesn’t smell
7. Will be able to taste again
8. Feeling of freedom
9. Kids wont be subjected to smoke
10. No more tongue fungus

Such heavy books that are read.
This book changed my life when I was young
"Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach
Just as profound as any of the books mentioned here but simple and only 93 pages.
Good book for kids too, read it to them :)

Since the OP asked for one book, I will have to say that in terms of my political understanding, "Our Enemy The State" by Albert Jay Nock was a big eye opener. A couple hundred pages of superb prose, and illusion-shattering ideas, written in 1935, but still profoundly relevant in today's context.

Other good books in the same vein

"The Road to Serfdom" - Frederich Hayek
" How Democracies Perish"- Jean-Francois Revel
"Man Vs. the State" - Herbert Spencer

And of course, who could forget, "The Gulag Archipeligo" by Solzenizyen(sp), or "Harvest of Sorrow" by Robert Conquest.

All having much to say about the monstrous crimes perpetrated against humanity by "the state".

If there is a benevolent God, He will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in Him."

Ludwig von Mises (Omnipotent Government),
Charles Tilly (Coercion, Capital, and European States), and, of course
Frederic Batiat (The Law).

I read The Turner Diaries in 1988, before Tim McVeigh blew up the Murrah Office Building in OK City.

When we were talking about it the next day, with the people arguing over whether it was the Iraqis or the Iranians, I said it was probably a local boy using an ANFO device.

They stopped laughing at me after a couple of days. Not surprisingly, that was Timmy's favorite book!

Even today, I consider it one of the most frightening books I ever read. The author is the late William Pierce, a former physics professor asked to leave the University of Washington, writing under the pseudonym "Andrew Macdonald".

Pierce also wrote "Hunter", which was in the same vein as "Turner", but had a lot more of his political theory tied up in it.

By the way, I also like all your other choices as well, although I would probably pick Narcissus and Goldmund or Steppenwolf over Siddhartha if I had to pick a Hesse book.
