Just what IS abstinence education?
Quote

Hmmm. Is it really about abstaining from birth control? Or sex?

I just watched a reporter try to get a rise out of Palin's press-flack by repeating "abstinence education" over & over (like it was a BAD-thing)....

My take on abstinence education is this, if you don't have sex, you won't get pregnant.
You can abstain from birth control.
You can abstain from abortion.
If you have sex, you could get pregnant, you could have a baby.

Pretty simple, but some don't seem to get it.

Is the word abstinence supposed to magically protect people from getting pregnant if they have sex?

The reporter was saying the word like there had been some giant failure. The only failure was to abstain from sex--but the rest of it seems to be working-out ok.

Oh, and if you abstain from having your babies, you will miss out on life.

Abstinence education is a dirty word.
It has proven time and time again that it only leads to significantly higher numbers of unwed teen pregnancies and HIV tranmsission.
It is a pipe dream smoked by the religous right as gospel, a spiritually depraved faith-based approach to the biological and psychological realities of human sexuality.

A better approach would be to teach teenagers really good wanking techniques.

Re: Just what IS abstinence education?Quote

Do they teach that they should not have sex?

And then just hope they don't?

That sounds pretty worthless.

Or do they give them the education about stds, biology etc.
and then tell them they have a right to abstain from sex or birth control or abortion if they want-to?

I really can't wrap my head around what it is they mean by "abstinence". Do they really try to teach people to abstain from sex?

Why would you try to educate a natural inclination out of someone?

It would be like trying to teach someone not to eat, or go to the bathroom.

Abstinence is about refraining from sexual intercourse, of course.

But i believe oral sex is ok, mutual masterbation is ok.

I understand that it is hard to not to go all the way, nor is it easy to teach children not to. Its kind of impossible with all the images in the media and movies.

But if all that was erased and children were taught the joys of oral, then intercourse could be explained as only beneficial in procreation.

The federal mandated sex-ed classes have led to all the premarital sex now found.

Abstaining education is discouraged by the government so it won't be found in hardly any schools. It does work just is not the governments objective for population control and social engineering.

Virginity needed for love? hf

Compared to our grandparents generation we have higher divorce rates. Nobody stys married for life any more, many never get married at all.

The government is comprised of globalist marxist who want an end of the family unit, nationalism and religion. Sad but true, this is gov policy, this is whats taught in schools.

The government should stay out of the sex-ed business.

The problem is that they do use "babies" and "stds" as scare tactics. This just won't work. Kids have very limited grasps on consequences. If young men and women were taught to respect each other and their bodies, abstinence might actually have a chance. But we can't have mutual respect going on now can we?

Problem is, adult men and women don't have that respect. We can't expect young people to if the adults don't. Plus TV is a horrible influence.

This kind of thing makes me want to roll my eyes (alas their is an emoticon for this lol!).

What part of "having sex may cause pregnancy" don't people understand or cannot be educated about in 5 minutes? Sounds to me like this situation is some religious and/or subjugation technique that allows the fundies to covertly influence society (or at least think that they are). Contraception education makes sense, but saying "oh have you considered abstinence?" is rather puritanical and unlikely to be a viable option for most people.
Take your dogma and shove it!
