He said they watched the birds move north in front of the storms! I saw this the morning of Gus!
Not much warning but they handled it. No power to worry about they didn't have it.
I listened to WWL and got updates about twice aday!
I knew New Orleans was 30 / 90 so I based it all on that!
I don't think the NHC has a handle of this storm!

HAVANA (Reuters) - Hurricane Ike roared ashore in northeastern Cuba on Sunday with 120 mph (195 kph) winds, torrential rains and massive waves that rolled through coastal towns as the storm headed on a path toward the Gulf of Mexico oil fields and possibly New Orleans.
State-run television showed waves slapping into the seawall and surging as high as nearby five-story apartment buildings before flooding the streets of the city of Baracoa near the eastern tip of the communist-ruled island.
Ike, a dangerous Category 3 storm, had earlier ripped through the southern Bahamas and added to the misery and death toll in storm-battered Haiti. Officials said at least 47 people had died in floods in impoverished Haiti on top of 500 killed last week by Tropical Storm Hanna.
The Cuban Meteorology Institute said the storm slammed into the coast near Punta Lucrecia in the state of Holguin, about 510 miles southeast of Havana.
"There is lot of worry, windows are beginning to break," a woman named Carmela said by telephone from the hotel where she works in the city of Holguin, 30 miles from Punta Lucrecia. "There's a lot of water, it's raining very heavily."
Officials said at least 1.1 million people were evacuated ahead of a storm expected to slash through the heart of Cuba, which is still reeling from Hurricane Gustav's hard hit on the west side of the long, narrow island last week.
After traversing Cuba, Ike is projected to enter the Gulf of Mexico, where 4,000 platforms produce 25 percent of U.S. oil and 15 percent of its natural gas, and point toward Louisiana and Texas.
Ike may threaten New Orleans, the city swamped in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,500 people and caused $80 billion in damage on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Gustav narrowly missed New Orleans last Monday. Continued...

SFMR AND DROPSONDE
OBSERVATIONS FROM A NOAA RESEARCH AIRCRAFT MISSION INDICATE THAT
IKE PROBABLY RE-STRENGTHENED TO 110-115 KT BEFORE LANDFALL IN
EASTERN CUBA. REGARDLESS...WEAKENING IS NOW EXPECTED AS THE CENTER
MOVES OVER THE LANDMASS OF CUBA. THE OFFICIAL INTENSITY FORECAST
SHOWS LESS WEAKENING THAN INDICATED BY THE DECAY SHIPS MODEL...TO
ALLOW FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF THE CENTER EMERGING OVER WATER SOONER
THAN EXPECTED. ONCE IKE MOVES INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO...THE
COMBINATION OF WARM WATERS AND FAIRLY WEAK VERTICAL SHEAR SHOULD
RESULT IN STRENGTHENING....HOWEVER THERE IS GREAT UNCERTAINTY AS TO
HOW MUCH THE HURRICANE WILL INTENSIFY IN 3 TO 5 DAYS.
More uncertainty... hmmm...
LATER IN THE FORECAST PERIOD...AFTER IKE IS PREDICTED TO
MOVE INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO...SOME OF THE DYNAMICAL MODELS SHOW A
WEAKNESS IN THE RIDGE THAT COULD TURN THE HURRICANE MORE NORTHWARD.
HOWEVER A NUMBER OF MODELS DO NOT SHOW MUCH OF A WEAKNESS OR A
TURN. SUFFICE TO SAY THAT IT IS SIMPLY TOO EARLY TO SAY WHAT
PORTION OF THE GULF COAST WILL ULTIMATELY BE AFFECTED BY IKE.
ALways to early!

EARTH--I actually was watching those waves and i counted
them going almost to the 4th floor of the apartment and
almost posted it here. But i thought my eyes were deceiving me.They actually were higher.THANKS for posting that.
Also when that was happening, a camera panned back-sort of
on a road parallel to the seawall with the water concealed
by houses-and in between the houses came a rush of water and
it started knocking down everything in its way--reminded me
of the sunami? surge last year-- but only waves-not a total
huge wave encompassing? everything. Those poor people.
Below was my post when i was watching those waves crash the seawall.

LOL, thought it a good time to repeat that one.
But, seriously, it's a wait and see thing. My rule of thumb is if it hits the coast with 115-120 mph, then we'll get winds reduced to about 80-100.
If that is the case, we'll likely ride it out. The apt. bldg. has weathered this before, and should again.
Any worse than that, we're out of here.
You could see some heavy weather from this also depending on direction after landfall. Don't you have some mighty pines and oaks around you ? You should be all right there even so. What part of the east pineys are you in ? |

There are more than 6,000 tenement buildings and "cuarterías" (multi-occupancy rooming houses) in Havana, as well as 46 shanty towns that are home to more than 18,000 people, in over 6,200 housing units. The authorities admit that living in these conditions gives rise to social tension and a significant number of violent incidents.
