MOSCOW (AFP) — Russia won backing over Georgia Friday from six heads of ex-Soviet states and hit out at the United States for sending a navy flagship to a key Georgian port where its troops have been patrolling.

The renewed support for Russia from the leaders of a Moscow-dominated bloc called the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) came as US Vice President Dick Cheney wrapped up a tour of America's allies in the region.

Cheney told Ukraine's squabbling leaders they must unite on a pro-Western course if they wanted to avoid the prospect of a Russian invasion similar to the one that befell Georgia last month.

"We believe in the right of men and women to live without the threat of tyranny, economic blackmail or military invasion or intimidation. Ukraine's best hope to overcome these threats is to be united," Cheney said in Kiev.

As the war of words between Russia and the US intensified, Moscow angrily questioned why Washington had chosen one of its most sophisticated warships, the USS Mount Whitney, to transport aid to the Black Sea port of Poti.

Washington says the ship is there to deliver vital aid to Georgian refugees but a senior Russian official suggested it might be serving military purposes.

"Naval ships of that class can hardly deliver a large amount of aid," foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko told journalists, underlining instead the ship's sophisticated surveillance technology.

Since bombing Poti last month during the war with Georgia, Russia has deployed troops at checkpoints near the strategically important port, who patrol in the town from time to time.

Russia sent hundreds of tanks and troops into Georgian territory on August 8 in what it says was a response to a Georgian offensive to regain control of South Ossetia from Moscow-backed separatists.

Moscow withdrew the bulk of its forces from Georgia under a French-brokered ceasefire agreement, but it has still kept thousands of troops deployed in the country, saying it needs security guarantees before it pulls out completely.

Russia last week recognised South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another breakaway region, as independent states, drawing fierce condemnation from Georgia and many Western countries.

It had perhaps hoped that the CSTO meeting in Moscow featuring the leaders of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, would provide a suitable occasion for its allies to follow suit.

However, some fear such a move could complicate other territorial disputes in the region and they instead signed a declaration of support for Russia's actions in Georgia.

"The partners in the organisation have given a unanimously negative assessment of Georgia's actions, Georgia's aggression in South Ossetia," Medvedev said at the closure of the summit.

He also warned against any attempt to rearm Georgia, saying Tbilisi's allies were in danger of drawing the wrong lessons from last month's conflict.

"We certainly don't want incorrect conclusions to be drawn from this conflict," Medvedev said at a news conference in Moscow.

"We don't want Georgia, which was the aggressor, to continue rearming, moreover in an uncontrolled way with incomprehensible purposes and completely unclear consequences," he said.

Medvedev added, "This is a lesson for the whole international community, including for those who decide to provide additional finance and arms cooperation for Georgia."

Lower-ranking Russian officials have repeatedly accused the United States of covertly rearming its partner Georgia under cover of aid deliveries, which Washington has made by sea and air.

In Tbilisi on Thursday, Cheney accused Russia of an "illegitimate" invasion to redraw the map of Georgia and unveiled a one-billion dollar (701-million euro) aid package to help reconstruction.

His trip to Georgia coincided with an announcement by the OSCE that it had sent military observers into a buffer zone between Russian and Georgian troops for the first time since the conflict.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers travelled from Paris to Avignon on Friday aboard a special high-speed train decked out in European colours in a show of unity over the Georgia crisis....

Russia Strives To Halt US Backed Yom Kippur Nuclear Attack On Iran

Kremlin intelligence reports are stating today that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during his upcoming visit to Poland, will attempt to halt the US and Israeli planned attack upon Iran, and currently labeled by Russian Military Analysts as ‘Yom Kippur II’.

Russia’s Military reference to this new war as Yom Kippur II is based upon the first Yom Kippur war (also known as the ‘1973 Arab-Israeli War’ and ‘the Fourth Arab-Israeli War’ and in the Arab World as the Ramadan War) in which the Arab Nations encircling Israel nearly destroyed the Jewish state and brought our World close to nuclear conflict when then US President Nixon ordered his Nation to the alert status of DEFCON III after Israeli threats to use atomic weapons if not resupplied by the Americans.

These reports further state that the established US-Israeli timeline for the beginning of this new war is based upon the Jewish Religious Leaders ‘biblical based’ beliefs that they will only be successful if attacks are launched between the September 29th beginning of Rosh Hashanah and the October 1st start of Yom Kippur.

Rosh Hashanah is known as The Ten Days of Repentance and is the most solemn days of the Jewish year, and concludes with the holiday of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and provides to the Jewish peoples the ‘religious rational’ in seeking forgiveness from their God for the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of innocents.

KIEV—US Vice President Dick Cheney urged Ukraine’s leaders to unite and pointed to Russia as the reason for the country’s woes as he held talks Friday with the deeply divided president and prime minister.

Cheney ratcheted up the pressure on Moscow and pledged US support for Ukraine, in the grip of a political crisis with bitter infighting sharpened by divisions over ties with Russia following its war with Georgia last month.
“We believe in the right of men and women to live without the threat of tyranny, economic blackmail or military invasion or intimidation,” Cheney said in a thinly-veiled reference to Russia’s recent incursion into Georgia. “Ukraine’s best hope to overcome these threats is to be united — united domestically first and foremost and united with other democracies,” he added after talks with Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko.

Using similar language as he did on previous stops on his tour of ex-Soviet republics Azerbaijan and Georgia this week, Cheney vowed Washington’s “deep and abiding interest” in Ukraine’s “well-being and security.”
He also kept up the pressure on Russia, whose ties with the United States have sunk to a new post Cold War low, touting Georgian democracy and slamming Russia’s military actions last month over the rebel region of South Ossetia.
“I arrived here last night from Georgia, a young democracy that in the last month has been subjected to a Russian invasion, and an illegitimate, unilateral attempt by force of arms to dismember its territory,” Cheney said. He also restated US support for Ukraine’s bid to join NATO and warned Russia, which has fiercely opposed ex-Soviet Ukraine’s bid to join the military alliance, against attempting to block Ukraine’s entry.

“Ukrainians have a right to choose whether they wish to join NATO, and NATO has a right to invite kraine to join the alliance when we believe they are ready and that the time is right. No outside country has a veto,” Cheney said.
Cheney spoke first with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and later met Yushchenko as he looked to heal wounds in Ukraine’s ruling coalition on a tour to bolster key US allies following the conflict in Georgia. “He acknowledged it’s a challenging time for Ukraine because of recent developments in Russia,” US administration spokeswoman Megan Mitchell told reporters after the closed-door meeting between Cheney and Tymoshenko in Kiev.

The squabbling highlights deep differences between the mainly Russian-speaking southeast of Ukraine and the predominantly Ukrainian-speaking northwest of the country, more oriented towards integration with the West. Cheney’s visit came as the flagship of the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet arrived with aid in the Georgian port of Poti, close to where Russian forces have been deployed since last month’s war with Georgia.
European officials have suggested Ukraine could be the next flashpoint for tensions between Russia and the West after the war in Georgia last month that has left Russian troops occupying positions deep inside Georgian territory. Like Georgia, Ukraine has angered Moscow by bidding to join NATO and the EU.

Yushchenko has said his country was a hostage in Russia’s reassertion of influence in the former Soviet Union and has offered to boost defence ties with the West. He has also warned that Russia threatens stability in the region.

SEVASTOPOL, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - The third U.S. Navy vessel to bring humanitarian aid to Georgia arrived in the Black Sea port of Poti on Friday, a Russian navy source said.

The USS Mount Whitney, which passed through the Bosporus on Wednesday, brought various supplies, including blankets, hygiene kits and baby food to become the first NATO ship to arrive in Poti since the Russian-Georgian conflict.

Two previous ships, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas and USS McFaul docked in the Georgian port of Batumi.

The White House announced Thursday a $1 billion economic aid package for war-ravaged Georgia.

The Black Sea Fleet source also said the flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet was big enough to carry heavy weapons, which - the Russian military believes - is probably the main part of the delivery.

An intelligence source said Russia was scrutinizing the vessel. "Very soon it will be clear, what the ship has really brought to Georgia," the source said.

The Blue Ridge class ship is a command and control vessel, which, the source said, coordinates the group of NATO ships in the Black Sea also including two U.S., one Spanish, one German and one Polish vessel.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, a spokesman for the US European Command, said Friday that Russian peacekeepers would not be allowed to examine the cargo as the port of Poti is on sovereign Georgian territory.

Bush Plans to Halt Nuclear Deal with Russia


US President Bush is poised to punish Moscow for the brief war with Georgia by withdrawing an agreement for civilian nuclear cooperation with Russia.

The pact, known as the 123 Agreement, would clear the way for more trade of nuclear goods between the United States and Russia but as early as next week President Bush could deep-freeze the agreement, withdrawing it from congressional deliberations, administration officials told CNN.

As the Bush administration is signalling that Russia's behaviour in the Caucasus is unacceptable for the United States, yet another friction between Washington and Moscow appeared.

Russia protest against a top-of-the-line US warship coming into the Georgian port of Poti, where Russian forces are still stationed. The ship is supposed to carry humanitarian aid for Georgia.

The USS Mount Whitney is the Navy's only Joint Command Ship and is considered to be the most sophisticated ship ever commissioned in terms of communication, control, command, computers and intelligence capabilities.
