Re: Is it safe to use veterinarian grade injectable vitamin B-12 shots?
Vet drugs are the same as human drugs in most cases. Of course there are animal drugs humans do not need such as a parvo shot.

When it comes to vitamins, penicillin, pain pills, etc it is all the exact same thing as what you get from pharmacy.

Dosing and labeling will be slightly different due to animals not being the same weight as humans. Dosage is usually by weight, where your common human dosing is set for an average weight.

My doctor won't give me a prescription for injectable vitamin B-12. Can I use veterinarian grade safely?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 471668

You do not need a prescription. It is about $6.00 for a years supply from the pharmacy. My physician did give me a prescription and when I took it to the pharmacy, they asked if I had insurance, and when I told them no, they told me that I could just buy it. If they took the prescription, they would have to charge the prescription fee. I have to have an injection every month and the clinic taught my wife how to administer it and gave me a dozen needles to take home for it.

Why don't you just get the b12 pills from the drug store? Or the 12-hour energy drink that is basically a ridiculuously high dose of b12? Or are you hooked on mainlining?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 491996

It usually only works by injection. The usual cause for deficiency in a meat eating person is mal-absorption. If he has mal-absorption, he is not going to absorb it from an energy drink either. Absorption of Vit B12 is pretty inefficient in humans and takes place in the last few feet of the gut. It is a good thing that we only need a very small amount of it.

It has to be a deep injection below the fat an preferably into the muscle. I use a 3/4 needle all the way in.

Is the veterinarian B-12 gel the same as what you can occasionally find in the health food store? Can you use it in your nose like the human kind?

try these they are even better than an injection and they are easy to obtain.

pure and organic and 90% absorbed in 20 to 30 seconds right into the bloodstream through the inside linning of your mouth, COMPLETELY by-passing the gastro tract.

I have pernicious anemia I take shots weekly my body cant process b12 I dont produce intristic factor there is a supply shortage and the reason doctors dont give out prescriptions is people that dont need it will take the shots for dumb reasons (weight loss and other stuff) you should be able to increase your intake of b12 by eating green vegies and red meat dont take b12 away from people who are really sick ,by the way b12 for animals is not the same I wish people would educate before taking b12 if you start taking it without needing it your body will not produce intristic factor
thats what pulls b12 from food try changing your diet first research alot before going for the shots. I hope you feel better try food first

Re: Is it safe to use veterinarian grade injectable vitamin B-12 shots?

Isn't B-12 Cyanocobalamin? or is that B-6?

The form of B12 that is absorbed by the digestive system is cyanocobalamin, but the body must convert that to two other forms of which methyl cobalamin is the only form the brain can use.

If you only have malabsorption of cyanocobalamin, shots of it is all you need, but if the process that converts it is broken, you need injections of hydroxo cobalamin. So the injectable shots are not all the same.

Even the conversion from hydroxo cobalamin to methyl cobalamin can go wrong, and I have had to take 5000 mg methyl cobalamin tablets daily which are dissolved under the tongue. You can't swallow them as the methyl cobalamin is destroyed immediately by the digestive system.

Veterinary medicine for dogs is the same as what is prescribed for humans. I can't believe people get so worked up. I have order Keflex and it is identical to what I get at the pharmacy. So are the needles I get for my B12/BComplex. So folks if you can't say something positive without lighting a fire to upset someone over a legitimate question, keep your rude opinions to yourself.

now it's up to you to find out the only way to take B-12
 Quoting: Ice

B12 can be ingested, dummy.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 491996

It cannot be ingested if you have pernicious anemia and you don't have the intrinsic factor in your digestive system to absorb the vitamin b12. And if your doctor cannot get you in for a month and the stupid urgent care clinics won't prescribe it, and you're feeling sick - you consider crazy things.

I don't know what they give pets... but I have some human-grade B-12 shots, and you know what's in them? Aluminum. No way I'm going to deliberately put that poison into my body!

What is aluminum doing in there? For vaccines, the poisons are to elicit an immune response, right? So why put in in the B-12?

Why don't you just consume your vitamins in another way? There's no need to inject vitamins into yourself. In fact injecting anything greatly increases the risk for disease.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 487804

B-12 taken orally is not assimilated by the body well - B-12 intramuscular shots are well-assimilated by the body - works MUCH better.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 471668

you will lose 20% in the muscle and here is a way to get 90 to 95% absorbtion without sticking a needle in your body.

pure, organic with no binders or fillers on any kind.

check out the PDR under mayor pharm and there is a graph that has all of the absorbtion rates listed.

Just find out if its USP, if so, its safe.
theres no need to run a human and nonhuman production line so I guess that it will be USP grade, human grade.

If you have pernicious anemia and want to manage your disease at home one surprising ally can be your insurance company-they would really rather you did the shots yourself instead of them having to pay for an office visit.
