| Quote |
The US is negotiating with Georgia and Turkey to establish a naval base at one of the two key Georgian ports of Batumi or Poti, reports say.
Turkey, in an attempt to avoid political tension with Russia, has not officially revealed its position regarding the plan, said Gruzya Online, a Russian-language internet site.
Russia had previously announced its intention to station its own special forces at the Georgian ports.
One of the responsibilities of US Special Forces in the region is to ensure the security of an oil pipeline passing through Georgia.

My guess is that Turkey is going to side with Russia. The whole Georgia fiasco is a warning to the region that U.S. has less clout in the region than thought. Also, Turkey has some sweet financial negotiations going on with Russia right now. |

Even before its completion, the BTC pipeline was affecting the world's oil politics. The South Caucasus, previously seen as Russia's backyard, is now a region of great strategic significance to other great powers. The U.S. and other Western nations have consequently become much more closely involved in the affairs of the three nations through which oil will flow. Some have criticized this degree of western involvement in the South Caucasus, arguing that it has led to an unhealthy dependence on undemocratic leaders.[citation needed] The countries themselves though have been trying to use the involvement as a counterbalance to Russian and Iranian economic and military dominance in the region.[15][22] It is seen similarly by Russian specialists claiming that the pipeline is aimed to weaken the Russian influence in the Caucasus. The Russian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Konstantin Kosachev even stated that the United States and other Western countries are planning to settle their soldiers in Caucasus on the pretext of instability in regions where the pipeline passes through.[23] |

And kiss the EU goodby forever. "Sooner or later all the peoples of the world will have to discover a way to
live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into
a creative psalm of brotherhood. If this is to be achieved, man must evolve
for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.
The foundation of such a method is love."

Doubtful. EU controls NATO. Right now the EU is busy kissing Putin's ass for U.S. involvement in the whole Georgia fiasco. EU will broker a peace agreement that won't include any U.S. or NATO bases (difference?) in Georgia.
EU wants that Nabucco pipeline built......can't do it without Turkey, LOL. |

Humanity requires energy at what price? Blood for oil? What power do you think NATO has without the U.S. military to support it? ZERO. EU doesn't want a war with Russia, therefore , NATO doesn't want a war with Russia......to conclude, U.S. no longer holds the power. |

heh, heh. Russia is playing American's game better than America. It already has a mandate to conduct peacekeeping mission in the region with EU/NATO. NATO has no mandate in the area. EU controls NATO. EU needs ng this winter. Russia supplies EU with ng. EU will bend over for Russia. NATO is out. U.S. is out.
Nabucco has never managed to get funding to be built. Russia has plans for south stream.......and money to build. Turkey controls pipeline to EU, has agreements with Russia.
U.S. has been checkmated. |

There has always been the possibility that US lost major capability when the tsunami took out Diego Garcia in 2004. Nothing since has indicated that US regained its strategic position for keeping a military presence in the Middle East.
Look at the map and see.

Going on an Imperial Bender: How the U.S. Garrisons the Planet and Doesn't Even Notice.
At the height of the Roman Empire, the Romans had an estimated 37 major military bases scattered around their dominions. At the height of the British Empire, the British had 36 of them planetwide. Depending on just who you listen to and how you count, we have hundreds of bases. According to Pentagon records, in fact, there are 761 active military "sites" abroad. [link to motherjones.com]
Handy map here: [link to www.motherjones.com]
In August 2004, with the Iraq War raging and his reelection months away, President Bush announced the most radical overhaul of overseas military basing since the end of the Cold War. The purpose of this so-called Global Posture Review: to enable the lean, mean fighting machine long envisioned by then-defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld—a flexible force that can fight up to four wars at once and respond quickly to crises, wherever they may arise.
The plan slashes conventional military bases in places like Western Europe—the so-called "little Americas" with their schools, streets, and malls—and shunts troops into bare-bones forward bases in far-flung locations, closer to the action and without the family amenities, places like Romania, Bulgaria, and Kyrgyzstan, frail democracies (or not), many with NATO aspirations and lax environmental laws. All this reshuffling isn't cheap: An expert panel convened by Congress to assess the overseas basing realignment put the cost at $20 billion, counting indirect expenses overlooked by the Pentagon, which had initially budgeted one-fifth that amount.
In Africa, where the military is establishing a new command called AFRICOM, the Pentagon is busy planting lily pads, officially "Cooperative Security Locations." US troops can use these low-key outposts to stash weapons and supplies, and to train local forces. In a crisis, boom! They can convert to a real wartime base. [link to www.motherjones.com] I thought I'd beat the inevitibility of death to death just a little bit. |

Well, I can tell you unequivocally that AFRICOM has been shelved due to lack of cooperation (and interest). Populating the 'Stans is another matter. Russia has a traditional ethnic history in the region, and the Russians are proving to be more economically generous and cooperative to the needs of the indigenous people of those countries.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 499200 9/7/2008 8:56 PM | | Re: US to establish naval base in Georgia | Quote | They can build all the lily pads they want, but lily pads have to be supplied.
How do you do that without a supply base.
Diego Garcia was it, five hours from Bagdad.
[link to www.google.com]
Unless the US gets another significant base, supply will have to come off ships. The big city aircraft carriers are sitting ducks in today's world.
The US needs a base, and if Diego Garcia was washed out, which the US never admitted, there is no supply base in that part of the world.
Rumsfeld is/was a dumbass, and worse! |
