September 8, 2008
LONDON - Storms lashed Britain on Friday, flooding houses and causing transport chaos in Wales and southwest England.
Forecasters said there was more heavy rain to come and said there could be more flooding as the storms moved north.
The Taff river in south Wales burst its banks and the government's Environment Agency published about 40 other flood warnings on rivers in England and Wales.

Overflowing rivers and storm drains flooded houses and stranded motorists in Wales and southwest England.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it had received more than 350 flooding calls in a six-hour period, including for people trapped in their cars by rising water.

Roads were impassable in parts of Wales while police in Gloucestershire, southwest England, warned motorists to travel only if necessary because some roads were under water.

Rail company Arriva Trains Wales also advised passengers not to travel.

Phil Rothwell, head of flood risk at the Environment Agency, urged people in flood-prone areas to keep an eye on weather forecasts.

"Rivers are rising very rapidly and bursting their banks, also the drainage system that takes the water away from our urban areas is also failing," he told BBC television.

Over the next 24 hours he said the heavy rain was forecast to move northeast, through central England and into Yorkshire and northeastern England.

Flood fears ease as rains lighten

Flood fears are easing across England and Wales as showers replace heavy rain and river levels settle.

The clean-up process has begun in some badly affected areas.

BBC Weather said Monday would be calm, but heavy rain is forecast for Tuesday, which the Environment Agency says means "we can expect more floods to hit".

Flash floods have hit Yorkshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. There are still about 60 flood warnings in place.

North-east England has been worst affected.

There had been fears that the heavy rain which affected parts of England and Wales would continue to cause flooding and rising river levels for several days.

'More floods'

The BBC Weather Centre said between 5mm and 10mm of rainfall was expected in north east England on Sunday, compared with between 30mm and 40mm of rainfall on Saturday.

BBC Meteorologist Susan Powell said "heavy rain" on Tuesday could potentially cause further flooding in Northern Ireland, south west Scotland, north west England, south west England and Wales.

"It's not good news for Wales in particular," she said.

These sentiments were echoed by an Environment Agency spokesman who said: "With river levels being high already, we can expect more floods to hit."

The clean-up operation has begun in Morpeth, Northumberland, where an estimated 1,000 properties were flooded on Saturday and hundreds of people had to spend the night in temporary accommodation.

Northumberland County Council member Andrew Tebbutt said Morpeth was "virtually cut off" from the outside world by the rising water after the River Wansbeck burst its banks, but the situation had "eased considerably" overnight.
