A Boeing 737 jet carrying 82 passengers and five crew has crashed near Russia's city of Perm in the central Ural mountains.
Sky News: First For Breaking News
The Aeroflot plane was completely destroyed, and all those on board are believed to have died, according to Russian radio.
The airliner was flying from Moscow and crashed as it was landing in the town of Perm, reports quoted the Emergencies Ministry as saying.
The crash occurred in an unpopulated area and no casualties were reported on the ground.
Few other details were immediately known about the crash.
"The airplane was found within the city's limits in a deserted area, there were no traces of casualties there," the emergency ministry's spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.
"The airplane took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, but as it was landing, at the height of 1,800 metres we lost contact with it." |

'There are 21 foreign citizens among the victims, including nine from Azerbaijan, five from Ukraine, and one each from France, Switzerland, Latvia, the United States, Germany, Turkey and Italy,' Aeroflot said in a statement.

A passenger plane has crashed near the central Russian city of Perm, killing all 88 people on board, officials say.
The Boeing-737, belonging to a branch of the national airline Aeroflot, was on a flight from Moscow.
At least 21 foreign passengers were on board. An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.
Radio contact with the plane was lost as it was landing. The wreckage was later found outside Perm, which is located near the Ural mountains.
"The Boeing-737 carried 82 passengers on board, including seven children, and six crew... All passengers were killed," Aeroflot said in a statement quoted by AFP news agency.
"As the plane was coming in for landing, it lost communication at the height of 1,100 metres and air controllers lost its blip. The airplane was found within Perm's city limits completely destroyed and on fire."

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report from Moscow that three Jewish families, two Habad students and a Russian general were among the 88 passengers and crew killed in the Aeroflot Boeing 737 crash at Perm, Siberia, Saturday, Sept. 13. The plane was in flight from Moscow.
Russian authorities report the plane’s sudden disappearance off the radar at the moment cockpit communications shut off indicate the craft may have exploded in mid-air. They suspect terrorism as the cause of the crash because -
1. At least five passengers bought tickets but did not turn up for the flight. Security officials are trying to locate their addresses and sifting through the wreckage spread over a large area for possible unaccompanied luggage.
2. One of the passengers has been identified as Gen. Gennadiy Troshev, who was esteemed as a Russian hero for quelling the Chechen rebellion and believed to be targeted for death.
3. Our sources name one of the Jewish - or possibly Israeli - families aboard the doomed flight. They have been named as Ephraim Nakhumov, 35, his wife Golda, 24, and their two children, Ilya, aged 7, and Eva, aged four. Their place of residence is sought. |

PERM, Russia, Sep. 14, 2008 (Reuters) — An Aeroflot passenger jet crashed near the Ural mountains in Russia on Sunday, killing all 88 passengers and crew including 21 foreign nationals.
Firefighters work at the site where a Russian airliner crashed next to a railway tack outside the Ural city of Perm September 14, 2008.
The Boeing 737-500 plane was on an internal flight from Moscow. It ploughed into wasteland while trying to land in the city of Perm.
Small pieces of debris covered a section of Russia's main east-west railway, forcing its closure, Russian media reported.
Television showed fire fighters walking around the smoldering, shattered remains of the plane. One of the only recognizable pieces of the aircraft was a white fuselage panel showing the logo of Aeroflot, Russia's national carrier.
Investigators have found two recording boxes from the crash site which they hoped will reveal why the 16-year-old Boeing crashed. There was no suggestion of an attack or sabotage.
"There were 88 people on board, 82 passengers and six crew," said Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova.
"All of them died. There were no casualties on the ground."
Aeroflot said 21 foreign nationals were among those killed -- nine from Azerbaijan, five from Ukraine and one person each from France, Switzerland, Latvia, the United States, Germany, Turkey and Italy.
Seven children died in the crash and Russian news agencies said one of the dead was General Gennady Troshev who in 2000 commanded the Russian army against rebels in the north Caucasus region of Chechnya.
Russian aviation had been trying to shake off its patchy safety record and Sunday's accident was the worst crash involving a Russian airliner since at least 170 people died in August 2006 when a TU-154 plane crashed in Ukraine on a flight from the Black Sea resort of Anapa to St Petersburg. |
