The highway heading into hurricane-wracked Galveston is jammed with gridlocked traffic for miles with people who believed they had a way onto the island.
Interstate 45 was packed for more than 4 miles Wednesday morning, and some travelers were getting frustrated.
People have not been allowed back since Hurricane Ike slammed ashore. City officials on Tuesday announced a "look and leave" policy allowing people to briefly check on their property, then halted it after belatedly becoming concerned about traffic jams.
It wasn't just residents stuck in traffic -- utility trucks with cherry-pickers, workers' vans and supply trucks were inching along. Many people just parked their cars and got out.

I think the main difference between this an an atomic bomb aftermath is that these buildings are not glowing green in the dark from radiation. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same.
The HC force winds moved in and then sat there and scoured the area for over seven hours. Can you imagine the force - the debris being picked up swirled around by the wind, and used over and over again to scrub anything standing off the face of the earth? That is what happened.
While the winds were not horrendous - "only" category two velocity - the fact that the storm moved through very slowly - you had about 3.5 hours exposure to the winds/rains until you hit the eye. Then about a 45 minute break and calm, and then another 3.5 hours of wind / rain / debris scouring the landscape. That you see is the result of that direct hit and those hours abd hours of exposure to 120 mph winds.
Crystal Beach, and much of Galveston are just gone. The land itself in some areas is actually gone as well. Not just what was on the land but where land once stood with structures, the structures are demolished and the land is now several feet of ocean water and it may get worse. Geologists are speculating that the tidal forces may have undermined the land itself, causing areas so collapse into the gulf and leaving more with deep fissures in the earth around the area, itself. If these fill with water and then the water drains out, you may have sinkholes the size of a small state in the near future! There may well be more land swallowed up and turned into gulf Ocean Floor.

Most probably many of them dead. But many eye witness and first responders (and satellite images) are showing thousands of bodies too.
This has been talked about on the KHOU local forums and alluded to on the local news.
We all have been screaming about this for days, the media blackout (well, actually the national media has been kicked off the island), and the no fly zone over devasted area's.
This is a very grim and frustrating situation.

We all have been screaming about this for days, the media blackout (well, actually the national media has been kicked off the island), and the no fly zone over devasted area's.

I got a call from family in southern Louisiana last night, the word down there is, an almost complete media blackout of coverage to avoid another Katrina media thrashing of the governmental response.
Word from people in the know, about what is happening, is at least, a thousand bodies seen, maybe many, many more washed out to sea, just like in Katrina, never heard from again, still missing. Devastation is extremely widespread, no water, no electricity, no food, no fema! People walking for miles for help, only to find none! They say it looks the way Biloxi looked after hurricane Camille, nothing left for miles, and miles! Too sad to say any more, poor, poor people my heart, and prayers go out to them all!
