Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to ActionQuote

I also posted a media blackout thread the second day after Ike. It is obvious to a lot of people. The best that makes sense so far is something went wrong with the bio lab. Who knows, maybe they lost some equiptment harrp related and are looking for it. I really dont know but the media and gov can really care less about covering home and personal loss.

Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to ActionQuote

Just thought I would chime in here. I have heard both sides debate that people had enough time to leave and others who say they didnt. Personaly I was speaking to someone who could not evac and they did not have the time they thought they did to leave. The surge came in too quick and the lines out of the island were too slow to gain any proper distance. So they stayed.

However this is not my main point. CNN stopped covering this the day after Ike hit. There was a very obvious media blackout. This is the main issue here on this thread.

Why the blackout? It was so obvious even I could see it.

AP article on tens of thousands unaccounted for (so far):

Some of Ike's missing may have just washed away

By JUAN A. LOZANO and MONICA RHOR – 3 hours ago

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — The death toll from Hurricane Ike is remarkably low so far, considering that legions of people stayed behind as the storm obliterated row after row of homes along the Texas coast. But officials suspect there are more victims out there and say some might simply have been swept out to sea.

Exactly how many is anybody's guess, because authorities had no sure way to track those who defied evacuation orders. And the number of people reported missing after the storm, whose death toll stands at 17 in Texas, is fluctuating.

Search-and-rescue crews cleared out Wednesday after plucking survivors from Galveston and the devastated Bolivar Peninsula, and authorities are relying on Red Cross workers and beach patrols to run welfare checks on people named by anxious relatives.

"We don't know what's out there in the wilds," said Galveston County medical examiner Stephen Pustilniks. "Searchers weren't looking for bodies; they were looking for survivors."

As the hurricane closed in, authorities in three counties alone estimated 90,000 people ignored evacuation orders. Post-storm rescuers in Galveston and the peninsula removed about 3,500 people, but another 6,000 refused to leave.

Nobody is suggesting that tens of thousands died, but determining what happened to those unaccounted for is a painstaking task that could leave survivors wondering for months or years to come.

Authorities concede that at least some of those who haven't turned up could have been washed out to sea, as at least one woman on the peninsula apparently was, and that other bodies might still be found.

"I'm not Pollyana. I think we will find some," said Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough, the county's highest-ranking elected official.

Pustilniks' office brought in two refrigerated tractor-trailers to store bodies until autopsies are performed. One sat in front of the medical examiner's office Wednesday morning with a sign on the side: "Jesus Christ is Lord not a cuss word."

By the afternoon, five deaths had been reported in Galveston County: one man who drowned in his pickup, another found inside a motel, two dialysis patients who could not get to their treatment, and a woman with cancer whose oxygen machine shut down.

The stench of rotting animals and livestock polluted the once-picturesque community of Crystal Beach, where about two dozen people stayed behind. One survivor told of seeing a friend wrenched from the rafters by the storm's fury and swept out to sea.

In evacuation shelters hundreds of miles from the coast, displaced residents — like the loved ones of victims of 2005's Hurricane Katrina — scrolled through address books and blog postings and anxiously dialed relatives, friends and neighbors not heard from.

On an Internet forum where survivors listed notes giving their whereabouts and asking for news of the missing, the messages revealed the growing anxiety and frustration of those desperate for some word about their loved ones.

"Anyone know Rosa who lived on the end towards the bay in gilchrist on Dolphin rd? She didnt have a vehicle and last we heard she was staying?"

And this message: "If ANYONE KNOWS WHERE MY FATHER IS OR KNOWS IF HE IS ALIVE AND WELL, PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I AM HEARTBROKEN!!"

In Galveston County, where about 15,000 residents stayed behind, officials did not have an exact number of missing residents. The Red Cross is helping track down the missing by setting up registries at shelters and sending workers on welfare checks, Yarbrough said.

At Galveston's emergency management center, 12 phone lines rang constantly with calls from people trying to find relatives. As the calls came in, the city's beach patrol would go to the homes and check.

Sometimes, the searches end in relief. The Red Cross quickly found an elderly Galveston couple reported missing Wednesday morning by relatives in Wyoming, Yarbrough said.

The search echoes the chaos following Katrina in 2005, when bodies were turning up more than a year after the storm as ruined homes were dismantled and families returned after months away. Katrina killed more than 1,600 people.

In that storm, there was no way to track people who left the city. The situation worsened when more than 100,000 New Orleanians who took refuge in Houston had to scatter again a few weeks later for Hurricane Rita.

Authorities opened a center in Baton Rouge, La., to take reports of people who were missing. And just as Ike survivors are doing now, volunteers there turned into amateur detectives — digging through Web sites that sprouted for missing families and calling nursing homes and hospitals.

The center for the missing closed nearly a year after Katrina, when authorities said they had finally exhausted leads.

Brownsville resident Amy Woodside has posted several messages online trying to track down friends who may have succumbed to Ike.

"I'm worried about everybody who is still unaccounted for," she said. "We may never find some of them."

Monica Rhor reported from Houston.

WTF???

They are gone already? Did they search every house? Did they mark the searched houses with that bizarre symbolism that indicated the house was empty, or contained XYZ number of bodies?

They are GONE???????

No one is saying they deserve it. Ever hear of personal responsibility. It is the issue here. Something you are dancing around in your financial post. What's wrong, didn't buy enough gold when it was $425/oz 3 years ago when the economic collapse rumors started appearing? Act on a hunch, use your intuition. The inside connection. It will make you an insider, instead of obviously disgruntled.

I think you are touching two good points here. Here on the island (North-Eastern Caribbean) we had two major hurricanes (high CAT 4) in 1995 and 1999. Especially the one in 1995 was total descruction, but houses did not "burst into flames", nor fish washed up the beaches like I saw on some photos in Texas. With "Lenny" in 1999 especially there was a huge storm surge, lots of damage on the coast, but no reports of big amounts of fish on the beaches.

There was no research going on yet in the new Galveston National Laboratory, so that is not the reason for any cover up if there is one. It is a brand new building and nothing had gone in there yet. All the medical buildings fared well, and there have been plenty of media in that area. It is outside of Galveston, in Crystal Beach and Bolivar where there is a media black-out for god knows why.

Galveston allowing contractors to clean up private residences without owner permission and before they can even see their own property.

By Leigh Jones
The Daily News
Published September 18, 2008

GALVESTON — City Manager Steve LeBlanc will not reinstate the “look and leave” policy allowing residents and business owners to come back to the island and start cleaning up their homes.

Instead, he has authorized a new policy allowing contractors to come across the causeway and start working on cleaning up property. The new policy is effective immediately.

Workers must have some kind of proof that they are legitimate contractors and have authorization from property owners to begin ripping up carpet and tearing out sheetrock, LeBlanc said.

But he was vague on what kind of credentials would constitute a legitimate authorization.

LeBlanc said he wanted to allow people back in but the city was not ready to handle an influx of people.

Contractors will have to abide by the city’s 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, he said.

Building Policy Changes

The city temporarily suspended some of its building codes on Tuesday, waiving the requirement for demolition permits for floor, wall and ceiling coverings, cabinet removal and general interior removal of storm-damaged materials.

Officials are looking at what other construction permits might be waived, but they are limited by what state law will allow them to do, said Wendy O’Donohoe, planning department director.

O’Donohoe’s staff is setting up a temporary office at the Galveston County Justice Center, a complex of buildings north of and in the 5400 block of Broadway, where people can ask questions and get information about rebuilding efforts.

They will begin issuing construction permits for rebuilding efforts as soon as possible, O’Donohoe said.

Before people start cleaning up their property, they need to remember to document the damage for insurance purposes, O’Donohoe said.

Assessments

Teams of planning department officials started assessing property damage throughout the city on Tuesday. They are averaging between 700 and 1,000 assessments a day, O’Donohoe said.

They are looking especially for evidence of water penetration, she said. The teams will not break down doors, but they will be looking in windows when they can, she said.

They will make a note of houses that are completely boarded up and check them again later, O’Donohoe said.

Teams are documenting damage at every house and categorizing each one by severity.

Officials will use the information to estimate the total cost of property damage and to create maps of the city showing areas with the heaviest damage.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also will use the information for its own damage assessments, O’Donohoe said.

The assessments will be done as soon as possible, but officials do not know when they will be finished, she said.

You're wrong according to this CNN article.

What I don't believe in this article is where it is stated that the pathogens were destroyed prior to Ike's landfall.

A day or two ago, I posted a link to the University of Texas website where they were asking for all Level I & II employees to report to the lab immediately in order to restock the dry ice for the "animals". Also said for all students to stay home. They also thanked the employees who stayed behind and worked tirelessly during the storm for their efforts to keep the "animals" iced with dry ice after the emergency generators failed.

Read this:
[link to www.cnn.com]

Officials: Texas lab with dangerous pathogens secured

CNN) -- Workers at a Galveston, Texas, laboratory said to contain dangerous biological agents secured the pathogens Friday ahead of Hurricane Ike, officials said.

The pathogens, which include the deadly ebola virus, were purposely destroyed before the staff left the facility in advance of the hurricane, said Gov. Rick Perry's spokesman, Andrew Barlow.

The Web site for the University of Texas Medical Branch/Galveston National Labs was completed and opened just recently.

The lab is one of the country's five biosafety labs that are Level-IV, the highest level. Such laboratories typically handle pathogens like smallpox, tularemia and anthrax to develop vaccines and antidotes.

The laboratory followed protocols for shutting, said Gretchen Michael, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She said that for security reasons, she would not detail the procedures or describe the agents.

A Department of Homeland Security official concurred that all the samples had been destroyed, and the building was locked down, quarantined and "rendered safe."

But a former student who worked at the Level-III laboratory while the Level-IV facility was being constructed and who knows the manager, said she would be surprised if all of the pathogens had been destroyed, since some of them are rare and extremely valuable.

The facility is the World Health Organization's center for research on arboviruses, such as ticks and mosquitoes, and tropical disease work, said the student, who asked not to be identified.

It also holds ebola virus and fever-causing lassa virus, sometimes-fatal hantaviruses and anthrax bacteria, she said.

She added that all Level-IV laboratories are designed to ensure they can withstand hurricanes, and because of its location, special care was taken with the laboratory in Galveston.

"I know that everyone at that facility, every single person at that facility, I'm certain has done everything they could possibly do to ensure that the community and the facility is absolutely safe, because all the people that work there, their livelihood and careers are dependent on the things that are held in that lab, and they would be destroyed -- just as much as the community would be destroyed -- if anything were to happen," she said.

CDC spokesman Von Roebuck said only that "quite a bit has been done" to secure the laboratory.

Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to ActionQuote

I believe because of the disorganization; especially with
this hurricane and not having some kind of data base of people listed...that this is one more reason why the chip
will be mandatory. We're going to see more and more disasters and war...it will be such chaos that people will
be begging to be chipped just so everyone can be accounted for. It's coming soon.

Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to ActionQuote

Hi All...Just wanted to add this personal email written Sept 16 from evacuees from
a small town south of Huston to this worthy post...just rec'd it yesterday and not the date it was
emailed. They, apparently, continue to experience problems. I have extracted
names of course, both are employed in the area and could possibly be identified
by employers, etc. Not that anything incriminating was said...but a lot, to me in
knowing this person, and noting their emotional 'downplay' lies in what they have
not
extrapolated on. Perhaps enough 'in the loop' by virtue of their profession to
know their emails are being censored to some degree. The second brief email
was actually emailed Sept 11 and displays the attitudes and somewhat confusion
on whether or not they even had to evacuate.

^^^^^Sept 16, 08^^^^^^

Whew! I wish I could have sent word out that we are all okay sooner. Power
was just restored about midnight last night and just got everything
(computer, etc.) reconnected, and, fortunately our internet service was
restored with the power. We were lucky a lot of the area will take 3-4 weeks
to have power restored. The phone lines have been pretty jammed up.
Sometimes we get calls in, most of the time the calls we make take several
minutes to try to connect then the connection fails. Text messages are
received hours after they are sent, if that. And, voicemail messages are
pretty much a mess. I couldn't send word out via email from my phone as that
tended to waste precious battery time (even though the lines were a mess).
So for those that we were able to be lucky to connect to, if they tried to
contact us, we had them try spread news of our status as xxxx and I needed
to be able to (as bad as the phones are) be connected to each other as we
were pretty much separated most of this time dealing with work and home
recovery. Please do not take us not contacting you each personally, as, it
took me 2 days to speak with my mother, father, brothers and pregnant sister
in north Houston.

Now, as for everything down here...xxxx had to report to work as I
mentioned before the storm arrived. And, I was at the hospital working. As
you may have heard I was at the hospital in an empty patient room "trying to
sleep" as I worked the day before (I was awake and dressed, watching the
hurricane status on TV) and one of the windows blew in around 2:30 am. The
door slammed shut on my ankle because of the suction of the wind in the
room, I am okay. I went to the ER and have no fractures, just some minor
cuts from the flying glass, swelling & bruising and some pain around my
ankle and received a pair of crutches instead of a sticker and lollipop:-).
We (me and the other nurses in the room) were very lucky. xxxx and I
both had very little sleep this weekend, but, all in all we were able to
weather Ike better than most in our community.

Our entire left side of our house had a lot of water damage, plus, damage to
the siding, roof, fence and chimney. We have two pretty big trees in our
front yard. One tree had a huge limb split off and the other tree split in
half. There are trees uprooted everywhere, power lines and street signs down
or hanging by cables, tons of fence and roof damage, but, even that terrible
damage in our area is nothing like the devastation not 15-30 miles away.
There was massive flooding and there are homes that all that all that is
left are the foundations & stilts the homes sat on. No debris, no couches,
no toys, no clothes or stoves strewn, no wood from roofs and fences, the
towns were pretty much flattened and wiped out. You can also imagine what
the flooding has done to the cemeteries. Our downtown skyline is a mess.
Hundreds and hundreds of windows were broken and there is glass shattered
through the streets. xxxx's buildings that he is responsible for (which is
close to downtown) had a lot of glass damage as well. There was a kind of
domino effect when a window would break the office equipment would be sucked
out and break more windows. We were very lucky.  We were also very fortunate
to have a generator that xxxx was able to borrow from his work to plug in
one fan, our refrigerator and a TV with local channels to see updates on
gas, food, bulletins from our local officials and school status for the
kids. On Saturday morning over 4 million people were without power. As of
last night I think they were able to restore about 2 million people back. We
shared our generator with neighbors so they can plug in their refrigerators.
We all have been helping each other out. You really appreciate that you know
your neighbors after a time like this, because, we all pulled together.
Yesterday, a local restaurant owner was riding in his truck in our
neighborhood passing out ice to anyone who needed it, and, made sure my
sister (the pregnant one) had some, after the storm passed she stayed with
us, and, is now back at her house now that her power is restored. My parents
and brother are still at their house without power, but, safe and sound.

There has been looting down the road from our house. One of our friend's
neighbors caught some looters and held them until the sheriff came. There
was also a report of a looter that and an 80-something year-old woman caught
them, had her shotgun pointed at them and made the looters dial 911 (you go
granny!). That should die down some as power is slowly trying to be restored
and the people are able to return to their homes. We also have a 7p-7a
curfew to also help with that. But, I'll tell you it gets pretty creepy when
everything around you is pitch-black and all you have is one lamp and a TV
for light. Gasoline is another problem. People are running out of gas
driving around looking for ice and supplies. We stocked up on gas for the
cars and the generator so we are okay there, for now. But, now that power,
again, is in the process of being restored hopefully it won't be a big
problem too much longer, as you need electricity to work the gas pumps.
There are, also, 18-wheeler trucks that carry ice, MRE's (meals ready to
eat-just add water) and bottled water (as many water supplies throughout the
area were compromised) and go to what are called POD's (point of destination
locations). They announce the POD's on the news and you are allowed (2)
24-pack cases of water, a box of MRE's and three bags of ice. There was a
line of 15,000 people at one of the POD locations yesterday afternoon. We
are fine with food & water. I have a lot of canned spam, corned beef hash,
vegetables and spaghettio's. xxxx teases me every time a hurricane threat
comes, and, I buy out the store (and then, nothing happens). Hey! I am a
California Girl, give me an earthquake any day of the week. This hurricane
and tornado business is for the birds, ha ha. We are, however, running out
of milk, eggs and other perishables that we had from before the hurricane.
Because, the stores need to throw out all of their stock out because of the
power outages. But, of course the kids appreciate this as they get to eat
pop tarts for breakfast. Now, speaking of the kids they are handling all of
this as troopers. xxxx is volunteering for extra chores and xxxx is
getting good at making sandwiches. I love my family!!!!!!!!

All in all it could have been a lot worse for us. Another really good turn
of luck is we had a cool front that passed through the Houston/Galveston
area. We are having weather in the 80's with not too much humidity. The week
before, the temperature was in the 90's, and, you felt like you were in a
sauna outside. It will probably get back to good old Houston heat and
mugginess next week, but, for now, we will take any of God's graces that he
will give. Now, we have to get with the insurance adjustors and start to
make repairs, we can already see mold growing. We're going tear out what
needs to be torn out and try to be patient to get through the recovery
process. Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers and send a few of
those prayers to the people who were hardest hit. I'll have to tell you this
is a really surreal experience, almost out of body. You run on pure
adrenaline for days and sit back and look at the devastation this hurricane
brought and it makes me so, so sad. And, each day there is something else
you read, see or hear on the radio that breaks your heart. The only time I
really cried was when I drove down my street for the first time and saw my
neighborhood and home just broken apart. But, then, you pull yourself
together and do what you have to do. I am off work until Tuesday because of
my ankle and xxxx has been working 7p to 7a for the last few nights.

Take care and hug your families because you never know how precious they are
until there is a threat to their lives. I love you and will talk to you
soon.

Hi Guys,

Just letting you all know that we are all fine. The majority of Houston is
not evacuating, however, we do live in a mandatory evacuation zone as we
live about 35 miles away from Galveston. And, yes, we are evacuating
(somewhat). xxxx is taking the kids to his work which is just like a bunker
where there will be xxxx coworkers and their families (very, very safe).
I will be reporting to the hospital to work where we will be basically be on
lock down from Friday through Sunday to care for the patients. We have
boarded up the windows in the house and are bringing the important
documents, pictures, etc. I think the media is over-exaggerating things a
bit as they are predicting that it will remain a category 2 hurricane,
albeit, it is pretty massive in size. We should have the cars loaded early
tomorrow morning and be safe and sound to our destinations before noon. We
will keep you all posted. I am sorry we haven't touched base sooner. Love
you tons!

xxxx and Co.
