This link takes you to satellite pics of the Texas and Louisiana coasts; they (NOAA) are continually adding more areas.
Click on a box which takes you to that area. Then click on one of those boxes.
It'll give you a larger pic which you can magnify. It shows pretty much everything. Individual houses, etc.

There are many labs in existence on UTMB campus with lots of animals, viruses, etc. But there is no biolevel safety 4 lab that is in use currently. The level 4 lab has just been built, but there is no research going on in there yet. They were still in process of finishing the landscaping around the building and offering tours to the employees. |

RHSC User ID: 493346 9/18/2008 5:34 PM | | Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to Action | Quote | I caught the tail end of a report about "cadaver" search teams, then they cut to Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas' press conference.
The teams (3 of them) will be searching a large portion of Chambers County, which is north and across from Bolivar and the hardest hit parts of the shoreline there. They do expect to find bodies, but it's going to be a long, hard process because they are searching marsh areas.
[link to maroonspoon.com]
Then Wayne Dolcefino filed another report from Bolivar.
They are, once again, talking recovery of bodies. "The government clearly doesn't want us to see what's happening here." Judge James Sylvia, of Chambers County, says "Starting today, we're out searching for bodies, and I know we're goin' to find some."

as someone pointed out on another thread, how did the cows survive, certainly not in attics and secondly, the biohazard lab building is adorned with a star inside a pyramid on the front of the fascade, as I was watching some of the news programs, especially the one with the journalist questioning the gov., there was a pyramid in the background on the board, i'm sure it was showing quadrants, but real interesting.... Quoting: impetigo 457333
Now that is definitely important information!
Do we even have a "United States" anymore?
Are we under complete control of the UN now? From what I've read in other threads, the UN owns most of our "federal" parks.
So many pieces to this puzzle. (sigh)

Not understanding this at all.
You say there was NO research going on in the building.
Not trying to be contradictive, but why did the University make this statement to CNN -
[link to www.cnn.com]
The pathogens, which include the deadly ebola virus, were purposely destroyed before the staff left the facility in advance of the hurricane, said Gov. Rick Perry's spokesman, Andrew Barlow.
And a one more question if you don't mind...
What "animals" had to be secured with dry ice and why would the University's website ask that certain level employees show up for dry ice placement? Don't know much about this type of work. |

Different facility (similar function - but not the same), located within the same campus. The GNL had not yet begun operations. |

Wayne Dolfecino is the man. He gets a lot of hell I guess down there for being outspoken, but he has been doing a hell of a job holding officials accountable.
I did think he could've been a bit more respectful of people's property when he was on Bolivar, though.
But that being said, he and Miya Shay have been awesome for ABC 13 there. If this story doesn't break soon, I will try to contact him again to volunteer my services. I called there once but was unable to get in touch with him. |

anonymous 2 User ID: 505969 9/18/2008 6:35 PM | | Re: Hurricane Ike Coverup: Call to Action | Quote | I don't know details about all the labs at UTMB. But I can tell you about my lab. I do not work with any pathogens at all, but I do have animals in the lab. They were taken to a secure area where they would be safe. They do not have any sort of diseases, we just want them to be safe. I do have tissue samples and chemicals that require freezing. Every lab has a freezer at -80 degrees Celsius to keep these tissue/cell samples and chemicals in. They are not pathogenic in any way, but need to remain frozen for stability in order to use them. With loss of power, these samples can thaw and ruin months/years of research. The dry ice is used to preserve these chemicals and tissue samples in the event of loss of electrical/generator power.
I can tell you that some research into HIV and maybe ebola use portions of the virus, but not the complete virus. These portions of the virus are not pathogenic but simply have some properties of the virus that are being studied. It may be these "viruses" that they are speaking of. There are probably some pathogenic viruses being studied at UTMB not being housed in the GNL - in biosafety level 3 labs. These viruses are not the highly communicable and deadly viruses such as ebola.
It is simply a more interesting story if the lab had just opened and research had to be halted. I do not work in the GNL, nor did I have plans to work in it. But I walked past it every day as it was being built. It did not appear to be open. I still saw construction workers entering and leaving it. The week before the hurricane, the railings on the steps were just put in and the grass around the building was planted. Employees of the hospital got an invitation by email to have a guided tour of the facility - these tours had not yet taken place and I had signed up. I can not believe that there would be deadly viruses in the building before the hospital would have employee tours into the building - employees who do not have training or clearance for a biosafety level 4 building.
The labs at UTMB are not something to worry about. |

Thanks so much for the explanation and your time!
I believe you...but the CNN article and the words "quoted" from CDC officials and Homeland Security give indication of something entirely different.
[link to www.cnn.com]
I guess when those of us not accustomed to this type of work read things like the CNN article combined with the messages coming out of the University's Emergency Responses we become concerned, naturally.
Thanks again and best of luck to you and yours.

It is very scary to work next to one and think of a leak. Those of us who live/work on the island talk about scary scenarios where the bridge to the mainland is taken out and the island is bombed when a deadly virus escapes. Believe me, we think about those situations. But right now, there is nothing going on there. |

I wouldn't even want to imagine one of those scenarios, especially if I worked or lived near a lab like this.
Was just reading an article about the lab in Atlanta and the outrage coming from local residents a year or two ago.
I guess we all have something to contend with in this life.
