Well, the study came from Yale, so I doubt it was unbiased. Try explaining the perils of castrating the military to an Obamaton.

"But, but, Barack's gonna change things!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

We tend to maintain our cognitive schema through self-motivated action.

Everyone carries this personal bias and is more likely to look for and find evidence that supports our beliefs and ignore evidence that contradicts them.

However, some people are more guilty of this than others. Some people are more analytical and more likely to apply scientific methodology in filtering stimuli. Others may absorb information more readily and with less critical analysis.

Education and prior experience are obviously influential.

A scientist who understands and is well practiced in controlling experimenter bias, for example, may be more likely to apply such concepts in one's world approach and tend to view things more objectively.

Conversely, one who tends to readily adopt religion, for example, may also be more likely to adopt other beliefs with less analysis of evidence, and less skepticism. Therefore, they may be more likely to find evidence that supports established beliefs and ignore evidence that contradicts them.

How flexible is your belief system?

Some people truly believe their views are correct and no alternatives need be considered. This is more consistent with a "faith" approach to the world. It tends to lead to a more rigid belief system and a constricted ability to reason and to utilize multiple perspectives.

On the other hand, some people believe they don't really know anything for certain. They believe what they know to be nothing more than the best information available to them at the time. This is more of a scientific approach to the world. It's practice tends to lead to a more flexible belief system.

Cognitive Accommodation or Assimilation? - That is the question.

Do we change our beliefs when new information becomes available (accommodation), or do we change the evidence to maintain the belief system (assimilation)?

In other words, does one's approach to the world tend more towards reasoning, science, and logic, or more towards faith and tradition?

One is more cognitive conservatism and the other is cognitive liberalism.

just wanted to add that i have travelled the world, and america has one of the WORST healthcare systems in the world. been through it repeatedly.

Oh, really? Then why do rich people from all over the world come to America to receive health care? D'oh! Stop being so simplistic. In some ways the US healthcare system is the worst in the world, in many ways it is the best. For those who have the money to pay for it, the US healthcare system is easily the best in the world. Why do you think most pharmaceuticals and new medical technologies come out of the US? It must be because our healthcare is "the worst in the world"....

Yeah, start thinking harder please.
 Quoting: Anonymouse 493119

I'm sure the US do have the best healthcare in the world, for the rich.

AC said system, please absorb before reacting.

Scratch a conservative and you'll find insecurity about liberals.

Scratch a liberal and you'll find insecurity about conservatives.

What's the common factor?

The OP has provided an illustration of how knowledge is not enough to set us free.

Denial makes us feel secure.

Insecurity makes us fearful.

Insecurity.

People who lie harder are called psychopaths, not conservatives.
 Quoting: semantics 437387

The only difference is psychopaths are convincing.

Politics:

A liberal is a conservative who lost his job.

A conservative is a liberal who just got mugged.

The Religion Angle:

"Jesus is a Liberal" is truly a real show stopper. Can't read the red words in the New Testament and be a conservative. They'd put Jesus in the anti-terrorist slammer.

The Beatitudes
The Sermon on the Mount
The Golden Rule
The Parables
Turn the Other Cheek
Forgive 70 times 7
etc.

Suddenly, this literal word-for-word of the one and only god for the past 6,000 years becomes "subject to interpretation" ... theirs.

LOL
