Loved that show.
I used to live in Minneapolis at the time, watching it on "the kitten that roars" (a very short-lived local station).
It was sad when the Comedy Central people "found" it, and acted as if they were the first ones to ever appreciate it's dry and absurd sense of humor. Gross. They almost ruined it for me.
The show reeks of Minneapolis, with it's dry wit, puppets and production values. Quoting: Earth Muffin 272605
Earth Muffin, I remember when it was on channel 23 in MSP...I grew up watching it. In fact, I used to wake up to my dad's insane laughter when he'd watch recorded episodes at night! Good times.
The first episode I saw was one of the Godzilla shows...I think he defeated Megalon or Mothra. Fucking Godzilla, is there anything he can't handle??

The flying turtle. Friend of children everywhere.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really get into the "Mike" episodes. I'm more inclined to Joel's painfully dry, classically Minnesotan sense of humor (which you can also find with Richard Dean Anderson on Stargate SG-1). Dry, dry, dry. |

Yes! What do you know about Gamera! Classic.
The MN humor was weaved into the show nicely. I think part of Joel's downfall can be attributed to his moving out to LA once the show made it bigtime. I never felt like Joel was meant for the big stage - he was hilarious, but he needed a small audience...a cult-like following if you will.

Oh, it's been so long.
I haven't seen MST3K episodes since they were originally aired.
The only Gamera episode I can vaguely remember is one about there being another 'earth' orbiting the sun, directly opposite of us.
I agree about Joel, he wasn't meant for the big time. Great local guy, though. |

As an MST3K purist, I have to go with Joel. His deadpan delivery and sarcasm was too much!
Although I must admit Mike grew on me as the years passed. He was never as funny as Joel, but he had his moments.
As for the robots, I could have gotten along without Gypsy. She was annoying and reminded me of an old hag grandmother's voice. Servo was decent, but Crow T. Robot was definitely the funniest. That's probably because he was so quick-witted.

I agree, having started as early MSTie, Joel shows are my favs
I LOVE the crazy Finnish ones The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is MOD when I lay my vengeance upon thee. |

I think you can watch the entire episode of Puma Man on the YouTubes...at least I remember watching a few episodes online recently.
Of course, now that work blocks my YouTubes access I'm left with GLP to fill my days...not that I'm complaining, though. |

It aired locally in Minnesota, I know that much. It was on channel 23 in Minneapolis/St. Paul - I don't remember where it went after that.
After the show was picked up by Comedy Central it made a brief appearance after Saturday Night Live. I remember this retarded host who ruined the experience, but they did introduce me to Santa Claus Conquers the martians...so I can't complain too much.
Long Live MST3K!!!
