Fifth Grader Suspended For Wearing Anti-Obama Shirt
Fifth Grader Suspended For Wearing Anti-Obama Shirt
"An 11-year-old boy in Colorado was suspended from school after he refused to take off a shirt that read, “Obama is a terrorist’s best friend.” His father says that the school is violating his son’s First Amendment rights."

If that's the kid's opinion, then he should be allowed to wear the shirt. The message wasn't sexually explicit, racist, or profane.

Probably because the word is "terrorists" and not "terrorist's". The school would be promoting bad punctuation by allowing this.

If you have ever been inside a 7th grade classroom lately, then you know it is next to impossible to teach anything without some sort of distraction interupting the entire lesson.

Ipods.

Cell phones.

PS2s.

Add this to the list.

Just shut all the schools down. What's the point?

You need prolonged independent thought in order for complex topics to be covered such as Algebra, Physics, Supreme Court cases that deal with Constitutional Law (yes, ironic, I know), the proper structure of a persuasive essay, etc.

Where is the happy medium?

Can we teach our kids the fundamentals as well as how to be independent thinkers, not robots, but also allow for first amendment rights?

I hope so.

Unless they've shifted the ages since I went to school?

You had your parents opinion, same as me. Parents shouldn't be trying to force their ideas onto other children without regulation.

For instance, people have ideas on education, what should be allowed, what shouldn't. These ideas have to pass thorough scrutiny and review before they make it into schools to influence children.

A kid wearing a t-shirt, there is no scrutiny or review. It's just a biased opinion, and therefore has no place.

Building on my earlier points:

For a history teacher, this case is perfect for a lesson on the first amendment. My original plan was to discuss the recent bannings of "baggy pants" as it relates to the first amendment and its also recent court rulings, but now I'm going with this.

Tomorrow we'll take a look at:

1. What has the Supreme Court, as well as the District Courts, ruled in the past on such an issue?

2. What was the original intent of the Framers when they proposed the Bill of Rights?

3. To what extent has the "modern world" made the "living Constitution" idea more viable or less viable?

I wish I was teaching in that school! Makes for a great teaching moment that is relevant to the election and the Constitution.

Re: Fifth Grader Suspended For Wearing Anti-Obama Shirt
first, i could care less what the kids wear to school. my son goes to a school in Texas where he has to wear his hair above the ears. I disagree with the policy, but oh well. Not worth complaining about.

Second, my opinion is that this kid grabbed his dad's/mom's t-shirt because he didn't have much to wear that day or just wanted to.. and boom, school freaks.

My other son was in 7th grade, and put on his dad's Hooter's shirt, and we got a note from the principal....oops? He also once took off in a Miller High Life Shirt that my husband had. Luckily, it went unnoticed.

Hmm, that's a good point. However, parents do need to instruct their children. To a certain extent, it's culture. Culture would die if children were taught nothing but dry facts.

My dad is very much a right-wing conservative. Without our discussions when I was growing up, I'd probably be the biggest bleeding-heart on the planet. As it is, I'm a right-leaning moderate. Thanks for the indoctrination, Dad.

As for the shirt in school...yeah. I think you're right. I guess wisdom comes with being venerable, huh?

Some 5th grades have mock elections, and clubs where you vote on things. 5th graders are in organizations where politics does happen. What's wrong with a 5th grader having a political opinion? I remember being in 5th grade and being asked by another student whom I thought would win the election, Reagan or Carter. I gave my opinion on whom I thought would win and got verbally assaulted by the gal for showing some sort of favoritism to the candidate she preferred. Point is, 5th graders hold an opinion and will be brutal about other kids having a different opinion, much like the political threads here on GLP.

Probably because the word is "terrorists" and not "terrorist's". The school would be promoting bad punctuation by allowing this.

Actually, the correct punctuation is shown on the shirt as noted by the OP. "terrorist's" is correct.

One parent is a strong republican, the other is an iffy democrat, I'm more closer to Libertarian. I have family who approach me on political topics and I give my opinion, but am not easily swayed.
