Here's a question, where is everyone who is preparing for chaos plan to run to as a safe hold. Stay in your houses and arm up? Or escape to the woods? Just curious because my hubby and I are thinking about where we would take our family to ride out the storm. His little brother lives in Boise, but it sounds like the FEMA camps are all setting up in those parts?

I live in Wichita KS [fairly good-sized city smack in the middle of the U.S.] right next to McConnell AFB. I converted a basement room into a "DHS" shelter-in-place - at least, that's what I call it "officially"! And: that's the sign I'll hang on the chainlink entrance if cops/troops come snooping around if/when martial law and house-to-house searches become the norm. I'll look like I'm simply "obeying instructions..." not that it'll make much difference by then!!!

In reality: it's my personal bunker. Stocked to the max with food, water, fuel [and yes: ammo] and essentials for two people to live COMPLETELY off the grid for a minimum of four months.

However, I'm not terribly proud of feeling the need to create such an atrocity in my home. I also happen to be a federal employee and deeply resent the mistrust and fear I feel from the government that pays my bills... but, I'm also a realist and only a blind man cannot see where our country has trod in the past decade. I'm also just old enough to remember the bomb shelters of the 1950's and the tense days of the Cuban missle crisis. History IS repeating itself but in a far uglier manner than before. Because, today: our enemy is largely our own government

REI or other backpacker supply house; now threre's a place to load up. Merino wool sox, polypropylene underwear, MSR Waterworks, Katadyn Expedition and other water filters, Dromedary bags, cookstoves, spare filter and stove parts, Quality Sleeping Bag and pad, decent frame backpack, good boots and shoes. Down jacket that zips into a goretex wind/rain parka, meals for your bugout bag....

Sometimes when I read web sites that allow the posting of one's thoughts, I am struck by the utter coldness that permeates humankind. Perhaps we have become so self serving and cold towards our fellow man, that we deserve to be annihilated by some form of disease or war..

No matter how old, they will need to eat, stay warm and dry, have water; and be defended.

disposable diapers and baby wipes if still in diapers. Can you have too many?

You might consider sorting through their clothing and having everything washed and ready to go. Each child could have a Rubbermaid Tote or go to resale shops and buy some used gym bags or nylon suitcases to organize their stuff.

If you know anyone, relatives/friends in a small town; probably safer there. Call and ask about staying with them if things get bad. Be sure you bring food with you, lots of it. Canned basics, dried beans and whole grains; maybe your cookware.

Any camping or hunting stuff you have will be a blessing.

If you have a bunch of diaper pins you can make bedrolls for the kids; or maybe find used sleeping bags at a resale shope for $5-$10. Pin up the blankets and sheet to make a bedroll. A couple of cheap tarps and some rope or wire will enable you to keep the rain off stuff, or do a makeshift tent. Need something waterproof between you and the dirt if sleeping on the ground. Dried grass piled under a tarp will keep you warmer also.

You will NEED Strike Anywhere matches, and lighters.

If you relocate, be sure your vehicle is in decent condition. Need to air-up your tires if carrying a lot of stuff, check oil and fluids, maybe get Jiffeylube or someplace to do a fast change.

If you have Nylon suitcases or backpacks you can tie them to the roof of your vehicle even if don't have a roof rack. Open doors, place bags on roof, run rope through handles and straps; tie inside vehicle, close doors. Run several tie downs this way. Put dark tarp over top of bags to protect from rain & prying eyes. Might also include a couple 5 gal jugs of spare fuel while you're at it.

If planning to leave, plan your route out of town first. Might not want to be on the freeways if things are already weird. Be sure of the neighborhoods you will travel through. You will benefit from having a handgun or short-barreled rifle in your vehicle when you leave. Maybe keep your handgun in a open top purse, concealed but accessible.

Take water and snack foods for the trip.
Having a water filter or even just a gallon of plain Chlorox bleach to treat water (8drops per gallon of clean water) will enable you to stay healthy.

Just got online after electricity and cable/internet being down for 8 days due to a windstorm hitting the midwest as a result of Hurricane Ike! This occurred in most parts of the metro areas of Dayton, Cincinnati and maybe some of the Columbus area (& I heard Louisville, KY got hit hard, too).

All we had access to was radio and only one channel even did any kind of reporting. If this happened after Feb 2009, even the people with battery power TV's would get no reception because of the digital conversion (don't think there is such a thing as a battery powered digital to analog converter).

Power company would not give info or projections of power restoration.

City governments (big, small, urban, suburban, rich or poor) did jack shit to kept citizens informed. They barely mentioned shelters, or places people on wells could get water. The city and county government were totally overwhelmed, useless and acted like victims themselves.

No FEMA, no local Emergency plans.

In the early days of the outage, no one, absolutely no one distributed information about which grocery stores were open, or gas stations, etc.

For the first few days, people waited 1 to 1.5 hours in line just to get fast food at Taco Bell.

Everyone without a generator lost all their refrigerated and frozen foods. Some communities announced dropoffs for rotted food so people didn't have the mess in their house or garbage, but most did not.

Unless you had a grill, you couldn't even boil water or warm up canned soup.

City maintenance workers tried to get trees off streets but the crews were small.

Found out our local suburban fire/police has to RENT a generator because they never had one! Of course, trying to get a generator was more and more difficult as they became more and more scarce each day.

The police shutdown a county courthouse for awhile because they said the 40 officers assigned to it could be better allocated during the outage. So, trials were delayed.


WHAT I LEARNED:

Most if not all city, county, or Federal agencies are not prepared for any kind of crisis. They also played the victim card that they were at the mercy of the power company and few put pressure on getting action. The public utilities commission was extremely apathetic.

Additionally many ATM's and banks were affected, so access to funds were limited if not impossible initially.

If you had a land line phone, you were in pretty good shape. But all internet phones were down and many people with cell phones couldn't use them because some Towers were affected and/or their minutes ran out so quickly that they started hesitating staying on hold with the power company, cable company, government office, etc. when it started costing them 25 cents per minute. Also, some automated info was called to residents but once again, you would only get the info if you were home and had a land line because answering machines don't work without power.

Some local small stores helped people buy medicines, ice, batteries with the aid of runners using flashlights and calculators and CASH to transact the business (the few good guys).

"No credit cards work when you are without power!!!"

The superwalmart was down but doors were opened with associates mulling around waiting for power. However, they did not sell items to people even for cash.

Hospitals told people to not come in unless they were deathly ill and told them to go to their primary care physicians. Never mind the fact that most primary care physician offices were also without power. Agencies in charge of Urgent care centers even debated about placing generators at local urgent care centers who had no power. They simply did not care.

Some neighbors did help others but as days dragged on, everyone's temper heated up and their patience waned. Keep in mind this occurred in extremely mild weather. If it had occurred during humid or 90+ degree weather or during the winter, real suffering could have been evidenced.

You are basically on your own.

-If you have a well, you had better also have a hand pump because if electricity fails, you, your family and any pets or livestock are S.O.L. You can only store so much water.

-You better have some method of heating your home that is totally independent of the electric grid.

-You better have some method of heating food.

-You better have food, some gas stored and CASH.

If you have a generator, you better be prepared to spend $$$ to keep in running if you are trying to keep you refrig or freezer up - it adds up quickly. Also, most generators are extremely noisy, so it is tantamount to putting out a sign in your front yard that you have food and energy.

-You better hope your neighbors have the same and that the crisis doesn't drag on.

-As for crime, surprisingly, I have not heard of much but then again, today is the first day I have had access to much news other than pre-recorded radio shows and a condensed, lame version of the newspaper. Also, the weather could not have been better to keep peoples' temper under control - not too hot and not too cold.

Trust me, things will go to pot on a massive scale and rapidly if some widespread or nationwide crisis occurs. We had to wait on utility workers being recalled that were sent to help out in TX and we also had to scrounge for transformers and work crews. In Southwest Ohio, we had line crews from Virginia, West Virginia, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri and Illinois that I know of and still it took 8 days to restore power to the Dayton metro area and the weather was mild. Some people are still out.

Weeks. A month, max.

You need to stock up before your credit cards stop working, bottom line. It's too late to buy your refuge in the woods unless you pay cash.

I've been reading about relocating. For some it might work but for most it won't. Most people won't look kindly on unprepared people migrating to their areas.

Traffic jams can freeze everyone and gridlock will not budge. If power is out, people run outted lights and accidents occur.

If you try think something big and bad is coming along; either dig in where you are or get where you plan to go now. When TSHTF, you won't have any options.

It is a good question. Interestingly, normal people at my kids' school are talking about this! Non GLP conspiracy types! They were wondering if "any country is safe?" e.g. England or other more obscure places. In my opinion you're not safe anywhere, including a South Sea island. A lot of the preparation for These Times needs to be done in your head. (knowledge, attitude, fortitude!)

I'm just south of Dayton and heard that power was out all the way up north past Cleveland.

It was/is unprecedented the extent of damage and lost utilities as well as no access to banks, gas and food for damn near the entire state of Ohio.

Our area did pretty well responding to the crisis, with one Kroger's store grilling all it's meat and perishables and basically GIVING it away to folks in need.
The communities here really came together to help each other out without the need for gov. or city officials to save the day. I was quite impressed.

It did let me know, that what I thought was preparations, wasn't close....I know now where I need to make improvements. Ice, batteries, extra gas and stored cash are essential!

Does anyone have a hand pump connected to their well? Our well goes 300+ ft deep and am wondering what to do for a hand pump.

Kudos to your local Kroger's. I'm South of Dayton near the Bellbrook/Centerville line and did not hear of such community-spirited businesses but glad you did. I did hear via the radio that there were pockets of people who emptied their freezers and had a mini-neighborhood grill-out but most people in my area held on tight to their supplies similar to the stores thinking power would return, so they lost their food and still no one got fed anyway.

As for preps, I don't think many of us are anywhere near where we need to be if any kind of long-term problem arises.
