It’s almost certainly just a case of the telephone game gone high-tech, but there’s an Internet rumor surging through inboxes and discussion boards that Joe Biden will drop out as Barack Obama’s running mate after his Oct. 2 debate with Sarah Palin — and that he’ll be replaced by Hillary Clinton on the Democratic presidential ticket.
The story line goes as follows: John McCain’s selection of Palin has generated so much interest in the Republican ticket that Obama needs to make a radical move to regain momentum. So in the days after the vice presidential candidates debate in Missouri, Biden will bow out, citing “health problems” (Biden underwent surgery in 1988 to repair two brain aneurysms). Enter Clinton.
Furthermore, the story goes, any damage the gaffe-prone Biden does during the debate will be erased by his abrupt exit.
It sounds like a job for Fight the Smears, the Web site the Obama campaign set up to quash damaging Internet rumors. But Fight the Smears hasn’t touched this one, perhaps out of fear that it would only further a wild rumor. The Obama campaign has not commented on it, other than to say that Biden’s medical records will be released soon.
Snopes.com, a site devoted to picking apart online rumors and urban legends, has labeled the status of the claim “undetermined.” Several online discussion boards have been loaded up with denials.
Biden has caused a few hiccups for the Obama campaign. On Monday, he had to issue a clarification after he called one of his own campaign ads “terrible” in an interview with CBS News. He also faced a rebuke from Obama after he spoke out against the government bailout of American International Group last week before Obama was ready to take a position.
On Tuesday, he said that President Franklin Roosevelt had gone on television in 1929 to discuss the Wall Street crash (Herbert Hoover was president in 1929 and the TV hadn’t been invented yet).
At one point, he even said Hillary Clinton might have been a better pick for Obama’s No. 2.
The Republican National Committee has gleefully set up a Biden “gaffe clock” to monitor his rhetorical flubs on the campaign trail.
Nonetheless, Democratic supporters dismiss outright any speculation that he might be dropped from the ticket.
“It’s crazy. … It’s just not gonna happen,” Democratic strategist Bob Beckel said.
Dropping Biden from the ticket would be a throwback to George McGovern’s shocker in 1972, when he replaced running mate Thomas Eagleton after it was learned that Eagleton had undergone electro-shock therapy for depression.
McGovern lost to President Nixon in a landslide, suggesting that seventh-inning lineup changes are not the best strategy for presidential candidates who want to shake things up.
Speaking hypothetically, Beckel said that, if it were to happen, the Democratic National Committee could feasibly call a mini-convention of sorts to confirm a new running mate. He also said “it would be so disruptive” that it would make no sense for Obama to pursue such a change.
Deadlines have passed in some states to send absentee ballots to military personnel and civilian voters overseas — meaning they would have received a ballot already with Biden (and Palin) on their parties’ tickets.
“I doubt it,” said Christopher Hull, presidential scholar and adjunct government professor at Georgetown University, when told of the Biden rumor. “Joe Biden is not that big a liability. Joe Biden was arguably the most experienced candidate in the [Democratic primary] race.”
“Joe Biden, of course, has shot off his mouth and gotten himself in trouble,” he added. “It’s Joe Biden we’re talking about.”
Though Obama lost ground in the polls after McCain tapped Palin to be his running mate, he has recently regained some of that footing. The FOX News Opinion Dynamics Poll on Wednesday gave Obama a 6-point lead, and a Washington Post-ABC News poll put his lead at 9 points. The Gallup daily tracking poll gave the Democrat a 3-point lead.
Hull said he would understand the desire to put Clinton on the ticket if Obama were persistently trailing in the polls.
A recent Associated Press-Yahoo News poll showed former Clinton backers are still reluctant to support Obama. The survey showed just 58 percent of them back him - unchanged since a similar poll in June.
But Hull said he doesn’t sense panic in the Obama ranks.
“I don’t think the Obama campaign was panicking even when the rest of the Democrats were panicking,” he said.
Obama, meanwhile, is standing by his man.
“Joe Biden is also an outstanding public servant and I am very proud of the choice that I made,” he told NBC’s “Today Show” in an interview that aired Tuesday. He said he’s a “great admirer of Senator Clinton’s” and he hopes she remains a “close adviser.”
And Biden is dutifully living up to his role as attack dog.
“Time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain’s judgment has simply been wrong,” the Delaware senator said Wednesday in Cincinnati.
BIden has campaigned all over the country for Obama, hitting long-shot states like Montana as well as key battlegrounds like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and Michigan. He’s largely hitting working-class towns, especially in the Midwest.
Though Snopes.com ruled the validity of the dropout rumor was “undetermined,” the write-up did cast serious doubt on the idea that Obama would dump the Senate veteran who seemed to fill in Obama’s perceived foreign policy gap.
“It’s difficult to definitely prove a negative, but rumors of Biden’s replacement as a VP candidate seem to be nothing more than e-mail chatter at this point,” the site said. “Whatever boost Barack Obama’s campaign might conceivably gain by swapping Joe Biden for Hillary Clinton just a month before the general election might also be more than offset by criticism that such a last-minute switch demonstrated poor decision-making ability and was indicative of a weak and vacillating presidential candidate.” |

The financial crisis has given Barack his momentum back. However, the debates could reverse that once again. Time will tell. |

Interestingly, Bill Clinton was on Larry King last night and mentioned how Hillary had tried to get a bill passed that would help stave off some of these problems regarding the bailout. Lately Bill Clinton looks too much like the cat that swallowed the canary. He is simply too happy, too smug, something is up. |

Hillary will be put on the ticket! | Quote | I think Obama is seeing how limited Biden's intelligence is every time he miss quotes history or facts. The most recent being Roosevelt in the White house when the 1929 stock market crashed and Roosevelts address to the nation on television immediately afterward.
Not only was it the wrong president, television was a decade away. In fact the famous Pearl Harbor speech by Roosevelt 'Day of Infamy' was heard predominately on radio, which of course was 12 years after the '29' crash.
Simply put: Biden is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

It would be electoral malpractice for the McCain campaign and its supporters to let Joe Biden's remarkable demonstration of cluelessness go unremarked. The man supposed to bring experience to the Democrat ticket has an uncertain grasp of history and reality. Speaking to Katie Couric on September 23, in reference to the current turmoil on wall Street, Joe Biden said :
"Part of what a leader does is to instill confidence, to demonstrate that he or she knows what they're (sic) talking about .... stock market crash, Franklin Roosevelt got on television and didn't just talk about, you know, the princes of greed, he said, "Look, here's what happened..."
The Biden bloviation contains at least two howlers:
The 1929 stock market crash occurred in 1929, when Roosevelt was more than three years away from the Presidency. So "President" Roosevelt never talked to the American people about the 1929 stock market crash as President, via any medium of communication.
Second, and even more revealing of a yawning gap where Biden's store of historical information should be, Roosevelt couldn't have "got on television" in 1929 if he HAD been President then, because there wasn't any television in 1929. Nor did President Roosevelt EVER "[get] on television" because --once again, sorry Joe -- there still wasn't any, during Roosevelt's entire three terms in office (1933-1945).
And by the way, Joe, Lincoln did not fly to Gettysburg for that speech.
Now lots of Americans don't have a clear idea of when certain major technological developments began, but those Americans, unlike Joe Biden, are not claiming to be stupendously better informed than Sarah Palin about everything pertinent to being America's President.
What other historical confusion does the learned Senator from Delaware suffer from? Scary to ask.
At least Sarah Palin has the good sense to sit down and listen to respected experts when the opportunities present themselves (e.g., meeting for two days with Henry Kissinger). She will learn quickly with these habits.
Listening, on the other hand, has never been Biden's strong suit. Reading American history, too, seems to have taken a back seat to talking during Biden's thirty-five year Senate tenure.
We can only imagine how many tens of millions of voters would be chuckling now if Sarah Palin had stepped in these misinformation cow pies, all courtesy of the mainstream media.
We are sure the mainstreams will be all over Joe Biden about this astonishing display of laughable historical ignorance, and that they will immediately stop describing Biden as better informed, more knowledgeable and, generally, more prepared to be President, than Sarah Palin.
Just in case they don't I suggest T Shirts for all McCain supporters: Front and Back: "Joe Biden: 'Roosevelt got on television.' And he's their experienced guy." |

Besides I love Biden, did you hear him saying,"When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed, He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'"
ROFL.....that guy is AWESOME! I LOVE BIDEN!
President Roosevelt during the Stock market crash of 29 on Television talking to the peoples...LMAO! I mean c'mon...does it get any better?
He's like a wacky nut uncle who "Sees things" and a million cool stories....."Hey Unc, did you ever meet a Viking?"...."Well sure, I used to know a Viking named Thor and once we used his Viking Hammer to repair a tire."...."Wow! that's cool, ever fly a spaceship?"...."Oh yeah I had to fly a spaceship all the time when I was a spy, we flew it into sun to stop the Russians, but we went at night when it's safe!, saved the world that day." "Holy crap, that's freakin awesome, ever have a submarine?" "Oh yeah, I used to have lot's of em, nuclear torpedoes, hatches, the ones we had could go 1000 miles per hour, you can't get one of those though, only agents can."..."Damn Unc you're the best!, I love you man!"........
ROFL....I wonder if Joe can get the Google cache of websites from the great depression, I would bet he can cause he's Senator and junk, we should ask him, cause regular people can't get that stuff ya know.....BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! ____________________________________________________

He should have kept his mouth shut about it like Obama but this jack ass likes hearing himself talk.
What a dumb ass! And again all the more reason to get him off the ticket before he kills Obama's momentum
[link to www.cnn.com]
Although Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden routinely mocks his Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for her onetime support of the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," Biden and his running mate voted to keep the project alive twice.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden campaigns in Washington on Tuesday.
Both Biden and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama voted to kill a Senate amendment that would have diverted federal funding for the bridge to repair a Louisiana span badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Senate records show.
And both voted for the final transportation bill that included the $223 million earmark for the Alaska project.
An amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, would have stripped the money appropriated to connect the Alaskan coastal city of Ketchikan to its airport on sparsely populated Gravina Island and diverted the money to Louisiana.
But Biden andObama and 80 of their colleagues rejected the measure, an amendment to a massive 2005 transportation bill that funded thousands of projects across the country. Watch how Biden has blasted Palin »
"That is probably the most disturbing element of this and the campaigning on the Bridge to Nowhere," said Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation, a taxpayer watchdog group. "Because, yes, they had a chance to vote specifically against the Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska to redirect the money to people, to bridges and infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Katrina going in to New Orleans, and they chose not to."

Did Palin support 'Bridge to Nowhere'?
The final version passed the Senate 93-1. Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who has made his opposition to congressional "pork-barrel" spending a cornerstone of his campaign, did not vote on either the Coburn amendment or the final bill.
Palin, whom McCain chose as his running mate in August, has regaled crowds at the Republican convention and on the campaign trail with her declaration of "Thanks, but no thanks" for the bridge. But her conversion came after she became Alaska's governor in 2006 and after the bridge became a national symbol of congressional waste.
The record shows that she supported the bridge as a gubernatorial candidate, and Democrats have seized on the flip-flop, perhaps no one with as much relish as Biden.
"I got also a bridge I got to sell you here, and guess what, it's in Alaska, and it goes nowhere," Biden mocked Palin on the campaign trail last week in Maumee, Ohio. And in Canton, Ohio, he tied it to McCain.
"If you look at it John McCain's answers for the economy, and we're in such desperate shape, is the ultimate bridge to nowhere. It's nowhere," Biden said. "It takes you nowhere."
But while the applause line appealed to the Democratic faithful, it could come back to bite the Delaware senator.
This year, Delaware has requested 116 congressional earmarks through Biden, its longtime senator, at a cost to taxpayers of $342 million. In an appearance on CNN's "American Morning" with anchor John Roberts, Biden said that he had been open about those requests and that they all can be justified.
"Everyone has seen them, and we have no Lawrence Welk Museums and have no bridges to nowhere in Delaware. It's all straight up," Biden said.
Among his requests: $1 million for renovation of an opera house in Wilmington, another million for the construction of a children's museum and thousands of dollars for a water park renovation in Lewes.
"I think opera patrons generally can afford to -- you can raise money for an opera house; you can refurbish things a lot of different ways," Allison said.
"To have federal taxpaying dollars -- which is coming from people all over the country; low-income, middle-income people, as well as the wealthy -- to go to pay for the renovation of something that is really a luxury for Wilmington ... There are far more vital projects that anyone could think of that needs money. You got health care. You got education. You got all other types of things. Instead, we are redirecting money to refurbish an opera house in Wilmington or to build a children's museum."
And Biden's request includes a bridge that even the head of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce says is not crucial at this juncture.
The Indian River Inlet Bridge is a vital link between two popular beachfront towns: Dewey and Bethany. Without it, the estimated 30,000 summer visitors would have to travel an additional 35 minutes to get to the towns.
"We need a new bridge, and we are fortunate to be at a place where it is finally going to happen," said Carol Everhart, the chief of the Chamber of Commerce.
The existing bridge has some erosion problems, and if it ever collapsed, Everhart said, it would cause an economic disaster in the community. But it's safe for now.
"The bridge, as it is, is perfectly safe," she said.
Still, Biden asked for $13 million to help shore up the existing bridge and begin construction of a new one. And that's what troubles the Sunlight Foundation's Allison.
"This bridge is not in any danger of collapse, and essentially what Sen. Biden is doing is saying, 'My state bridge gets the priority dollar even though it is not a priority project,' " Allison said.
He said the Department of Transportation, rather than U.S. senators, should be deciding which bridges get priority funding in the country. That way, the bridges in the U.S. that need immediate repair would be first in line for the dollars needed to do the work.
As he embarked on his presidential bid in 2007, Obama said he would no longer ask for earmark projects. McCain, who has been a longtime critic of the process, does not seek any for his home state of Arizona.
CNN asked Biden's campaign whether it could ask the senator about his earmark requests and his votes on the Bridge to Nowhere.
In response, a staffer e-mailed, "You've interviewed Gov. Palin re: her completely made up position on the Bridge to Nowhere right?" |
