when it's hitting the fan, life and death, it rivals that of any natural disaster.
in fact, just the last time i paddled out, it took four of us to scale the cliff back, as high tide had come in, and the waves were exploding off the rocks.
we were united, and we were community.
and we probably represented the corners of this forum, who knows.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 477332 10/30/2008 5:14 PM | | Re: There is no unity or community in this society | Quote | I think what OP is referring to is the pulling together of society during the '40s (war) and '50s (prosperity, moving up, community) -
Read up on culture creation and how each generation is given its music, fashion, sexual mores, etc. This is ALL PLANNED, decades in advance. And here we thought the '60s war OUR generation - aha, aha, aha.
Personally, during this current election, I've never seen people more divided; it's much worse than the protests during the Vietnam War; we're REALLY divided and hostile toward each other. I'm fully expecting rampant civil unrest after the election with the economy totally flushed down the toilet.
Add in a LOT of ANGER over the housing mess, food prices, an old white or young black guy going into the Whitehouse; wow, it's enough to make anyone in their right mind retreat into their bunkers with lots of ammo and food and ride this sucker out.
Things are going to get VERY nasty. That's why we'll probably have another HUGE-ass war - to 'unite' everyone again.
Works every time. Personally, I'm not falling for it. For I know, nobody, and I mean nobody, is worried about MY ass - only for their own.
Law of the land. Stop hoping and start preparing. |

Like the individual every generation and every society must face their 'dark night of the soul'. Humanity has faced many such challenges in history, each different in one manor are another. We too face great challenges and must overcome them to survive, this is not new, and even though the problem seems large and unmanageable the challenge is to each of us, and to each of us there is the responsibility to respond.
If you see this issue as a great problem, as many on the planet do then you must do your part to build community

this isnt true of all places in the U.S...but many places it is true...
where I live...people are much different...its like Mayberry and Andy Griffith....
we leave our homes and cars unlcoked...do alot of bartering....and even the gas pumps are still analog at many of the gas stations ! ...
of course imsure the day will come, when even this are gets corrupted by the indsutrys and elitsts...but hopefully that wont be for another 20 years or so... |

but for now....most people are enslaved to the way the system has been setup..therefore, they are a slave to the system itself...
we allowed it to happen....we embraced it for its conveniences ..... |

Forming an unemployed's support group
Network for elderly neighbors' needs
Volunteer at the nearest food pantry
Repair local schools
Form a a neighborhood group for taxes, credit problems, debt issues, etc. etc.
Addicted to our singularity, we shun all unity. |

That said, the reality is something different than that and daydreams of utopia only go so far.
If one is really serious about all this, the 'problem of society' can be found within yourself. As humans we share the same questions, fears and sorrows no matter any superficial differences.
The question really is, can a whole new way of being come about? What must end to actually make it happen.. the fears, distortion and madness arise in thought... they are thought, and we are our thoughts.. there is no separation. So, can the mind itself actually see all this and come to a point where it ends its nonsense.
When the individual can do this, society will alter for society is comprised of individuals. |

Tptb have been fairly successful with the "muslim/islamic fundamentalist/terrorist" angle.
Trouble is...tptb ALSO have the economic situation to deal with; most Americans don't care about wars somewhere else any more (unless there's nothing else going on).
PLUS...this election is just !WoW!, imo...

and it really must change.
"It" can't change. You have to be the change, remember?
Community means you have to know your neighbors and want to interact with them. So there is a place to start. It may feel like a task one person couldn't possibly take on alone, but that is where we have to start. I can't convience you and you can't convience me. I have to be what I want to see around me. If I'm sitting behind a computer, alone in my room, I am saying that is where I want everyone to be. And the only unity there is that we gather on glp now and then to vent or see what others are saying. Saying.
Not being. And in being we are the way. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 898

Anonymous Coward User ID: 539102 10/30/2008 9:25 PM | | Re: There is no unity or community in this society | Quote | i like this thread. it has made me think. america has an "us against them" mentality. when the mindset is criticized, people go into a frenzy to justify their grouping.
i think that, people who claim to be cristians, or intellects, or evolved or spiritual should possess empathy and compassion for those who are different from them.
i think that many people forget, and this is in regards to america, many people forget that we are all in the same boat in regards to the economy, health care and foreign policy. whether you are rich or not shouldn't make a difference because america is only as strong as the people who are on the lowest rung.
my reasoning is similiar to: "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link". since we can't out right murder people of the lowest social order, we must find a way to strengthen them.
if america can not compete for jobs, america as a whole will suffer. because of the -global economy- coupled with the computer age, americans are competing on an individual basis with other people around the world. it is no longer, soley, a country competing against a country.
if our people are not educated we will keep slipping down the statistical poles until we become what some scorn, we will become a third world country.
i often wonder why public college is not free. anyone who can learn should be allowed to. i often wonder how come we don't train people, so they have a skill that can be used in rebuilding america's infrastructure. the people can make money, we can have our roads, bridges, and electrical grids fixed, and money can be spent in the local economies. that will help fund schools, and police dept. and increase local businesses profits.
as a society, we do not have to become socialist, we just need to do what we sincerely can and strengthen the weakest links. |
