There didnt use to be oceans. If you look it says waters came from the deep. And earlier in the book it says it hadn't rained and water would come up from the ground and water plants. Also the oxygen content used to be much higher. It would explain people living much longer lives.
That's the glory of the Hydroplate theory.
It gives us a Noah, who lives on a completely flat Earth (no mountains) and despite that no-one has ever seen an ocean, he builds an ocean-going craft.
Of course Noah's little arc had to survive superheated steam and kilometer-high tsunami, so maybe that little detail wasn't such a problem....

The ancient Greeks had 3 flood accounds probably from different times. Ogygus, Deucalion and Dardanus (apart from the other catastrophs like Phaethon's or the very true eruption of Thira's -Santorini- volcano.
The story of Deucalion is very similar to that of Noah's but the rain lasted for 9 days only. Pausanias says that at his time Deucalion's tomb was near Acropolis of Athens (Olympion) and was shown to visitors as well as the chasm from where the water of the flood dissapeared. (have you ever heard of the other chasm of Hierapolis or the one at Manbij (Bambyce) northern Syria? They are all connected with this myth)
Another interesting accound on this flood from Athens says that only the "potted men or men in pots?" survived in Attica. From then on, the Athenians had a feast which was called "the Pots" (Chytroi) in rememberance of this flood and it was connected with the "day of the dead", in the celebration of Anthesteria.
Until the 50's in many greek places people kept this fest and they were cooking legumes in pots for the dead.

Science has pretty well proven (but they do not all agree) that the flood in Noah was real. The asteroid strike is a great theory as to the cause and the timing is right on the money, too.
Also, remember that the magma that was thrown up thru the ocean hole and out into space left huge voids underneath the continents. Because of this - the world has many more aquifiers than ever before. These repositories of water run under most of the US if you dig deep enough. We do not know how far down the extend but the best guess is miles after the 500 to 1000 feet to get to the top of them.
One interesting side note:
In the days before the flood mankind lived much longer. The patriarchs are said to have lived eight and nine hundred years routinely. There is a theory that says the water vapor covered the earth much more densely than it does today. This vapor was once in the air. Now it's in the aquafiers and lost as ice out in space. The vapor kept all kinds of uv rays from ever reaching earth and once it did hit earth it shortened some pairs of our DNA after a couple of generations exposure to it and our life spans slowly decreased to the biblical three score and ten.

Aquifers are not voids. The majority are porous rock, not big holes. Most rocks are water-permeable (it just take a long time.) A void five miles down will collapse. The weight above it is too great.
