HURRICANE IN CANADA?
Quote

Kyle is maintaining hurricane strength as it passes east of Cape Cod and south of Maine on its way to landfall in Nova Scotia tonight. Flooding will continue to be the main concern for eastern New England as more heavy rain engulfs the region.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports that Kyle strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane late Saturday afternoon after passing to the west of Bermuda. No significant change in strength is expected today, but it could weaken to a strong tropical storm as it enters the cooler waters of the Gulf of Maine tonight. Kyle will make landfall after the slight weakening in Nova Scotia late tonight.

As Kyle lunges northeastward to the east of New England, the greatest impacts will also stay to the east. Nova Scotia will lie to the east of the storm's center and will be hit the hardest.

More locally heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches will be dumped over coastal Maine, with some locally higher amounts. Rainfall totals will be 1 to 3 inchesfarther inland across eastern Maine. These same areas have already received 2 to 4 inches of rain with locally higher amounts over the past couple of days and are already enduring flooding.

The following is a list of 48-hour rainfall totals ending at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday:

* Little Compton, R.I.: 5.85 inches
* East Falmouth, Mass.: 5.76 inches
* New Bedford, Mass.: 5.55 inches
* Wells, Maine: 4.30 inches
* Portland, Maine: 4.06 inches
* Pawtucket, R.I.: 3.87 inches
* East Providence, R.I.: 3.50 inches
* Berlin, Ct.: 3.15 inches
* East Hartford, Ct.: 2.97 inches
* East Boston, Mass.: 2.14 inches

Tropical storm-force winds will make it a wind-driven rain over southeast Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Hurricane-force winds, greater than 74 mph, could lash southern Nova Scotia.

Offshore and over the Canadian Maritimes, conditions will remain rough with a surge of wind and rough surf from eastern New England to Newfoundland in store through early Monday morning as Kyle accelerates to the north.

The Severe Weather Center has an up-to-date list of flood and storm-related watches and warnings in effect. The first hurricane watch in 17 years is in effect for eastern Maine.

According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency Director Rob McAleer, "The biggest threat to safety will be the potential for small stream flooding and high wave action in coastal areas. We urge everyone to pay close attention to weather warnings, and stay away from any flooded roadways, or fast-running streams." Urban and poor drainage areas as well as areas located along streams will be the most susceptible to flooding.

In Somerset, Mass., Buffington Brook was overflowing its banks with 2 feet of water spilling over local streets. Several businesses were sandbagging to protect from the flooding, while a car was stuck in the flood waters. Two people had to be rescued by boat.

County Street developed a large sinkhole as a result of the inundation in Somerset, Mass. Another sinkhole, 2 feet in diameter, formed on the major highway of Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence, R.I.

Dangerous wave action along the coast of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes will cause coastal flooding and beach erosion. Rob McAleer told FoxNews.com that the southern coast of Maine is more susceptible to erosion, because the northern coast is more rocky.

Evacuations of coastal islands were advised for residents that depend on electricity for medical reasons. The gusty winds in northeast Maine could knock down trees and power lines, cutting out power. The ferry services will likely be shut down from the coastal islands.

Bangor Hydro-Electric, Eastern Maine's power supplier, was prepared for potential outages by having extra crews on duty.

The western Atlantic was not the only active place in the tropics. Super Typhoon Jangmi made landfall as a Category 4 storm in Taiwan early this morning, EDT. According to the AccuWeather.com Western Pacific Typhoon Center, Jangmi will pound northern portions of Taiwan with winds over 100 mph.
