Best method to kill yellow jackets
What is the best method for getting rid of yellow jackets? We are plagued by them this late summer. We are noticing large (very large) yellow jackets flying by...these must be the queens that are being referred to in the articles above? Do they live in the same nests? Thanks for the info.

Open some canned tuna or salmon and eat or save it, leaving some scraps and juice in the can. Mix a spoonful of borax into the scraps and place the can up high on a window ledge or somewhere where cats can't reach it. The little bastards will take the poisoned fish back to the nest and kill them all.

Re: Best method to kill yellow jackets
what you are seeing are likely called giant hornets

they are similarly colored to yellow jackets, just not with the same contrast....more brown and yellow? These are colony nesters and sting savagely. usually nest in the ground.

if they are the SAME color as yellow jackets, bright yellow and black, they are likely to be cicada killers. these are solitary ground nesters. they hunt and kill cicadas, usually coming out in august until mid september. they bury the cicada in their nest and lay an egg in it. one egg per nest.

these are relatively harmless, unless you are a cicada. still wouldn't want to get stung by one. they are NOT aggressive

i can tell you from experience that the giant hornets are savage and deliver a savage sting

Re: Best method to kill yellow jackets
The rather large, yellow, jellow-jacket looking bastards are called Japanese Hornets. They are usually mellow but will sting the shit out of you if you screw with them.

I've noticed all summer long those bloody yellow-jackets all over the place. Most of the time they will hang low to the ground. Looks like they are in a dying nutroll panic searching for anything to drag back to the nest. Usually don't see them act quite like this till fall hits but this year they've been acting weird like this all summer long. Even the folks who work in landscaping have been having a devil of a time with the little yellow demons.

Perhaps they are sensing we are going to have a long, cold winter and are scraping up everything they can to survive the winter. Maybe we should heed their warning...

Flame thrower.
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?
So why can't I touch it?

Get a 'bug zapper' at a hardware store (usually sold to kill mosquitoes) and hang it in the area of your yard where the yellowjackets are most prevalent. Before you plug it in, put some bees honey on the inside screen. Then plug it in.

The yellow jackets usually get a bit of a shock on their first attempt to get the honey, and that makes them angry. They then go back with a vengeance, and ZAPP - they are charcoal.

The slow way to get them is to take a gallon plastic jug and make a dime size hole in the side it about 1/2 way from the bottom of the jug. Put a bit of warer, 1 or 2 inches in the jug and some honey and or some rotten meat. They will crawl in the hole after the bait and can't find their way out, so they drown in the moat.

If Box elder bugs are invading your home take a garden hose lawn feeder, such as miracle grow feeders, and fill it with cloths detergent. Then spay them with it liberally. The soap will not harm your plants.
