To me this story alone confirms it was not an earthquake that caused the waves but rather something like a rock being dropped into water and rippling out. IMHO
Cocos Island residents say ´no warning´ of tsunami

Residents of the Australian territorial Cocos Islands say they had no warning a tsunami from Sunday´s Indonesian earthquake could be heading their way.
The islands lie north-west of Australia, almost south of the earthquake´s epicentre off the coast of Sumatra.
Tour dive operator Dieter Gerhard says he heard no official warning of a tsunami, unlike regular cyclone warnings.
But he says deep water in all directions must have stopped any waves from building a destructive force. "Cocos sits on top of the Cocos Ridge and that ridge runs generally in a north-south direction, and not east-west, so we would believe that with that there was no significant landmass, no continental shelf, to slow the wave and increase the height of it," he said.
