dont buy us coins, the are subject to the confiscation clause in the patriot act. get coins denominated in foreign currencies. maple leaf, krugerand, chinese panda's, mexican peso's etc...you get the idea. |

Gold and Silver are the only 2 things have has ALWAYS.... since the beginning of civilization been a way to trade for goods and services.... even in EGYPT GOLD was used.
My husband does the LOST WAX CASTING SYSTEM... the oldest manufacturing system in the world.

The old saying that something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it is generally true..so I am quite puzzled by the difference in gold prices..(if you can find it for sale.) What it has been trading at on the market does not seem to be reflected in the price that it has been trading at on ebay. I monitored quite a few 1 oz gold kruger and maple ebay auctions last night and checked the final sale price which was between 950 and 955 an ounce...now how is it possible that these people are willing to pay that much above the market price for gold that is priced on the stock market at about 824$ and ounce?

Only after acquiring the necessities needed to sustain life, such as a years worth of food, a maintainable source of pure water, no debt, and viable shelter, should you think about gold. Too many threads on boards like this promote the idea that gold is the means to prosperity in a SHTF scenario. At some point it may be, but then again it may not.
Whoever controls the future government will determine the method of exchange.
Historically, gold and silver were commonly used to mint coins, other metals could be used. For instance, Ancient Sparta minted coins from iron to discourage its citizens from engaging in foreign trade. In the early seventeenth century Sweden lacked more precious metal and so produced "plate money," which were large slabs of copper approximately 50 cm or more in length and width, appropriately stamped with indications of their value.
Of course, metal based coins had the advantage of carrying their value within the coins themselves — on the other hand, they induced manipulations: the clipping of coins in the attempt to get and recycle the precious metal. A greater problem was the simultaneous co-existence of gold, silver and copper coins in Europe.
Stability came into the system with national Banks guaranteeing to change money into gold at a promised rate; it did, however, not come easily. The Bank of England risked a national financial catastrophe in the 1730s when customers demanded their money be changed into gold in a moment of crisis. Eventually London's merchants saved the bank and the nation with financial guarantees.
So who in a future case scenario will set the exchange rate for gold? It may go up to $1500 per oz. now, but when fiat money collapses and hordes are starving it be as little as a few cans of beans.
I personally don't have the funds to accumulate lartge storehouses of food and barterable items and gold, so I must choose wisely where my funds go. I think most are in the same predicament. However, those shouting BUY GOLD! BUY GOLD! outnumber those quietly whispering start saving food and barterable items because you can't eat gold tend to give the impression that gold possession is the answer to all.
I am reminded of the biblical story of Joseph in Egypt.
He interpreted Pharaoh's dream about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of hardship.
If you recall, Joseph prudently advised saving grain, not gold.

It's the COMEX, not the "stock market".
The COMEX price has been manipulated for years by the US Government, ie. suppressed, using the limitless quantities of "money" that the US Treasury borrows from the unFederal unReserve.
This is "paper" gold and silver, for which it is now very difficult to actually take delivery of the physical metals that it represents.
The "real-world" (or "black market") prices of the precious metals are the true prices discovered in an unmanipulated, free-trading market. |
