After a collision with a comet, a nearly 8km wide piece of the asteroid "Orpheus" is heading towards Earth. If it will hit it will cause a incredible catastrophe which will probably extinguish mankind. To stop the meteor NASA wants to use the illegal nuclear weapon satellite "Hercules" but discovers soon that it doesn't have enough fire power. Their only chance to save the world is to join forces with the USSR who have also launched such an illegal satellite. But will both governments agree?

I seriously doubt that at this very moment TPTB have the kind of influence to "make a small asteroid" threaten our lives.
How could this even be possible?

A 5 meter iron asteroid entering atmosphere at 12 km/s and at 19 degrees will:
The projectile lands intact, with a velocity 4.78 km/s = 2.97 miles/s.
The energy lost in the atmosphere is 3.17 x 1013 Joules = 0.76 x 10-2 MegaTons
Transient Crater Diameter: 104 m = 341 ft
Transient Crater Depth: 36.8 m = 121 ft
Final Crater Diameter: 130 m = 426 ft

Things would significantly change if instead of iron the 5-meter asteroid would consist of dense rock:
The projectile begins to breakup at an altitude of 48400 meters = 159000 ft
The projectile bursts into a cloud of fragments at an altitude of 41300 meters = 135000 ft
The residual velocity of the projectile fragments after the burst is 10.2 km/s = 6.33 miles/s
The energy of the airburst is 3.92 x 1012 Joules = 0.94 x 10-3 MegaTons.
No crater is formed, although large fragments may strike the surface.
The air blast at this location would not be noticed. (The overpressure is less than 1 Pa) |

That it will be in fact seen;
That it will not behave as a normal asteroid;
