An asteroid (ASTEROID 2008 TC3) is going to hit Earth TONIGHT!

all the attention and B.S. on this thread is just ridiculous, you are really the lunatic fringe, this happens every couple months, just first time they have spotted an asteroid this small before it hits. Big whoop... nice little fireball in upper atmosphere, oh no doom! NOT!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 519180
I think it's only a big deal around here because of the timing, which is very suspect. I don't expect it to impact earth the way that we expect. Expect the unexpected. |

I'm not expecting any real doom, but it should be a helluva fireball display! "A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against its government."

FYI
''ASTEROID 2008 TC3: A small, newly-discovered asteroid named 2008 TC3 is approaching Earth and chances are good that it will hit. Steve Chesley of JPL estimates that atmospheric entry will occur on Oct 7th at 0246 UTC over northern Sudan [ref]. Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock poses no threat to the ground, but it should create a spectacular fireball, releasing about a kiloton of energy as it disintegrates and explodes in the atmosphere. Stay tuned for updates. [ephemeris] [3D orbit]''

it's names ASTEROID 2008tc3. that means it's at least 10 meters across. if not they would have named it METEORITE 2008tc3. 10 is not a "few" by anyone's definition. if they lie about this, what to say they aren't really lying and the damn thing is 100 meters in diameter.
just by its name it has to be at least 10 meters in diameter. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 511994

lol...u posted that at 8:37 EDT. Adding 1hr 10 minutes would make it...9:47pm. The target is 10:30-10:50 EDT
less than 1 hr to go...
"JPL confirmed that an atmospheric impact will very likely occur during early
morning twilight over northern Sudan, north-eastern Africa, at 2:46 UT Tuesday morning."
02:46
dunno how your clocks are working but on mine it says 01:51 UT now Quoting: Anonymous Coward 519215

Will the changes in the magnetosphere have any influence on this object?
Just curious. Thanks :)

Impact Effects
Robert Marcus, H. Jay Melosh, and Gareth Collins
Please note: the results below are estimates based on current (limited) understanding of the impact process and come with large uncertainties; they should be used with caution, particularly in the case of peculiar input parameters. All values are given to three significant figures but this does not reflect the precision of the estimate. For more information about the uncertainty associated with our calculations and a full discussion of this program, please refer to this article
Your Inputs:
Distance from Impact: 1.00 km = 0.62 miles
Projectile Diameter: 45.72 m = 149.96 ft = 0.03 miles
Projectile Density: 1500 kg/m3
Impact Velocity: 12.88 km/s = 8.00 miles/s
Impact Angle: 19 degrees
Target Density: 2500 kg/m3
Target Type: Sedimentary Rock
Energy:
Energy before atmospheric entry: 6.23 x 1015 Joules = 1.49 MegaTons TNT
The average interval between impacts of this size somewhere on Earth is 149.3 years
Atmospheric Entry:
The projectile begins to breakup at an altitude of 68000 meters = 223000 ft
The projectile bursts into a cloud of fragments at an altitude of 26500 meters = 87000 ft
The residual velocity of the projectile fragments after the burst is 8.09 km/s = 5.03 miles/s
The energy of the airburst is 3.77 x 1015 Joules = 0.90 x 100 MegaTons.
No crater is formed, although large fragments may strike the surface.
Major Global Changes:
The Earth is not strongly disturbed by the impact and loses negligible mass.
The impact does not make a noticeable change in the Earth's rotation period or the tilt of its axis.
The impact does not shift the Earth's orbit noticeably.
Air Blast:
What does this mean?
The air blast at this location would not be noticed. (The overpressure is less than 1 Pa) |

that if they do not immediately cease attacks on people in
Darfur what they witness tonight will be just a small sample
of what's in store for them. "Sooner or later all the peoples of the world will have to discover a way to
live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into
a creative psalm of brotherhood. If this is to be achieved, man must evolve
for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.
The foundation of such a method is love."

Just read the whole story.
This stuff happens all the time.
That's why you make a lot of money on asteroid hunting.
Even if this asteroid is iron and reaches the ground intact, the predicted impact area is largely uninhabited, and the danger to individuals is small.
