Allow me to be a contrarian...
If you look at this chart, you can move along the daily line to exactly 3:08PM.

I do not see anything particularly amazing about that time, nor the action that was going on. It seems to me the Dow was already headed down in the usual late-day selloff we've seen before. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 342843
Well, looking at that chart, at 3:08, it was above 9000 - 9,007.6104 to be exact....
At 3:48, it was at 8601.3301. So, 4.5% decline in oh....40 minutes.
Since the total decline for the day was 7.33% and 4.5% came in the last 40 minutes....then I'd say OP made a good call.

someone is buying global indexes to keep them from imploding...
Small time speculators are not taking massive paper loses betting tha tthe markets are going to rebound higher than their entry point.
Waterfall declines are normal...day after day of crash is not...They would just accelerate to zero and implode without all the "buying on the way down" to slow the crash.
It's going to have to bounce soon though...people are beginnging to notice how abnormal this is. |

My paranoid 'trust no fucker' mentality makes me presume the typical mindset of a vulture who just never has enough food or in this case, power.
Imagine a perfect tool to dominate after you have put a system in place over a long period. An attitude of 'we'll crash the system, if you don't get us the keys' added with 'but we'll ensure we buy it on the cheap first'.
The other factor is the ability to pay back this debt. If you don't pay the (privately owned) banks, they take what you've got.
What would happen if in both of our countries (me being UK), we didnt cash up? Who'd take control of our countries?

Lehman CDS sellers face massive losses in auction
NEW YORK, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Banks, hedge funds and other sellers of protection on Lehman Brothers' (LEN.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) (LEHMQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) debt are facing losses in the area of 90 percent the insurance sold when the value of the failed bank's credit default swaps are settled in an auction on Friday.
If sellers of protection outweigh buyers in the auction, as some analysts expect, losses may be even higher.
Lehman's bankruptcy filing last month sent its bond values plunging as the majority of the investment banking assets that had supported the debt were purchased by Barclays Bank, leaving debt holders at the abandoned holding company with little to reclaim.
The auction to settle credit default swaps protecting the debt will be one of the largest settlements of contracts in the $55 trillion market,
If more protection sellers than buyers choose to use the auction to settle the contracts, there will be a net open interest to sell bonds, which can push down the recovery.
"With so much uncertainty over currency, coupon and maturity, we feel most protection sellers will opt for cash settlement," said Tim Backshall, chief strategist at Credit Derivatives Research in Walnut Creek, California.
"We also feel that protection buyers are probably dominated by traditional managers who owned the bonds but bought some protection at the end to hedge," he said. And these investors are likely to choose to settle the contracts by physically delivering the bonds, instead of using the auction, he added.
This could send recovery levels down even lower than currently expected. |

The CDS market is 55T total. They are going to auction off a small percentage of that and what it brings will set the going price on the entire 55T.
They are expecting a 90% re-evaluation in the down direction. 90% of 55 trillion is @ 50 trillion.
This means that $50,000,000,000,000.00 is going to VAPORIZE in a couple of hours??

Ummmm no, Think of that 55 trillion as insurance. The freddie and fannie houses caught fire. The had a settlement monday. There wasnt tons of damage so out of $500 billion in coverage, 10% damage about $50 had to be paid out.
Lehmans house burned down, they had $600 billion in insurance. It is thought at best the action will bring in 15 cents on the dollar or worse. That means payout willbe aour $450 to $500 billion dollars.
The countyparties to Lehman are going to be other banks and hedge funds, some are going to fail, others will have to do major liquidation meaning selling their "good" stocks and bonds to raise cash.
The only good thing is this doesnt bankrupt any of the superbanks or investment house we will at least hit floor in the finacial part of this crisis. If one or 2 more biggie go bust, the system will completely implode. |
