Let me take a wild guess here.
The CDS market is 55T total. They are going to auction off a small percentage of that and what it brings will set the going price on the entire 55T.
They are expecting a 90% re-evaluation in the down direction. 90% of 55 trillion is @ 50 trillion.
This means that $50,000,000,000,000.00 is going to VAPORIZE in a couple of hours??
Is there even that much money in existance?
Ummmm no, Think of that 55 trillion as insurance. The freddie and fannie houses caught fire. The had a settlement monday. There wasnt tons of damage so out of $500 billion in coverage, 10% damage about $50 had to be paid out.
Lehmans house burned down, they had $600 billion in insurance. It is thought at best the action will bring in 15 cents on the dollar or worse. That means payout willbe aour $450 to $500 billion dollars.
The countyparties to Lehman are going to be other banks and hedge funds, some are going to fail, others will have to do major liquidation meaning selling their "good" stocks and bonds to raise cash.
The only good thing is this doesnt bankrupt any of the superbanks or investment house we will at least hit floor in the finacial part of this crisis. If one or 2 more biggie go bust, the system will completely implode. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 521970
