To all you Gold fanatics... A question
Quote

Whats to stop the government confiscating it all? they have done it before.

You can try and bury it or hide it, but then when you try to sell it later its classed as illegal and gets seized.

Secondly they could just flush the price of it down the toilet making it virtually worthless for anything other than barter.

Are you really gonna give someone a Gold Eagle you paid $600 for a loaf of bread? whats he gonna give you in change 6 eggs?

People who buy gold don't plan on selling it. They won't use it during a depression. They may use it after depression is over and people start buying things again.

I'm assuming the people who previously didn't turn in their gold held onto it until it was legal to have again. They just kept it or passed it onto their heirs.

Re: To all you Gold fanatics... A questionQuote

for apmex.com if you dont buy over 10k at a time, there is no required reporting. gold coins can be stashed practically anywhere. you can hide 40 coins worth 40k anywhere. silver is harder to hide being worth less per ounce than gold...your choice. I would have 50 50 in gold and silver . so 10 k in silver 10 k in gold and 10 k in cash hidden. out

Its never been "legal to have again"

The number of stories of people who had old coin collections valued and then seized by the mint as illegal to own is testament to that.

What's to stop the government confiscating your life? car? wife?

those people are stupid. They had coins which had been minted just before the seizure, and sent them in to be evaluated. Obviously with a bit of common sense they could have figured out they would get confiscated

To respond to your second point, about them flushing the price down the toilet, there is already a disconnect between the spot price and the real price. The price is being determined in the marketplace by people who know the real value and can see through the manipulated price. It will always have a value, as it has for the last 3000 years.

And if you need a loaf of bread, you'll use junk silver coins. The gold may come in handy to purchase land, animals, etc. It may not turn out to be the perfect investment, but it sure beats the hell out of fiat currencies.

I sold all mine at a loss when silver was 11 bux/oz and gold was 800/oz. The few halves I've got left I'll throw in the sewer before I give it back to the government. chuckle

Re: To all you Gold fanatics... A questionQuote

When the American government confiscated gold in the 1930's, some Americans were able to move their gold into Canada (safe deposit boxes or stashed with relatives.

Meanwhile the gold mining business was the one bright spot in the Canadian economy. My history book says that Canada was one of the hardest hit countries by the Great Depression, however there were no bank failures and no gold confiscations.

Exactly, the price of gold at the coin store is spot plus the length of line forming up in the parking lot...

big disconnect between paper gold, and actual.

It matters to him, because he is "short of gold" The only way he'll get any is by prying out a tooth. Most of the godlike are over-long gold, guns and canned goods (feels really good this week! ..well every week since april 2004)

The bad part, is that all of our (normal) family now wants to take up residence.
