Now I have a much better idea about what to do. I will ask them what the photo will be used for, then ask what their offer is. If it's for the image, maybe no more than $500 I'm thinking. But maybe that's greedy since it's my first photo being sold. They may have a contract for me. This is where I get confused, please forgive me I'm new at this but it's what I wanted so I'm not complaining either! Do I need to give them a contract or do they give me one, or do we give each other one? |

Charge $200 and make sure you have a contract spelling out that you maintain the copyright and give them worldwide exclusive publishing and distribution rights. I am an author and have sold 10 articles recently for $500 a piece. They will likely use it for commercial purposes and therefore can afford to pay you. bless you, exciting!! |

Congratulations Stacy, that has to be exciting for you! I've been shooting a lot of photographs and they are posted on Flickr.com. Quoting: StacyflowerToday I got an email from an art company that said one of their clients wants to buy one of my photos. I'm just starting out so I don't really know the price I should sell it for and the procedure for completing the transaction. I would like to keep the rights to use in a portfolio but not necessarily to re-sale. I would really appreciate any help and advice on this subject. thanks! One more thing...I know most graphic artists have their terms listed in their information pages, and I'm guessing that photo artists do too. I know stock photographs have those terms clearly stated... Browse through some of those sites and you'll then know what to do. Do I need to give them a contract or do they give me one, or do we give each other one? Basically you would be conveying rights in your property. The more you convey the more it is worth. If you transfer all rights (exclusive) it may be worth more than if you retain rights to use it your self or even sell it to someone else again (non-exclusive license). There is value in your work but there is also value in saying "I've sold my work and here is a copy of it published in X". Ask them what they have in mind and tell them to forward you the contract. Find out if they are just buying stock photos to resell or if they are going to really publish the picture. By the way, nice shots. I shoot quite a bit myself. Very nice shot. Check out www.istockphoto.com. It is a resource for people wanting to sell their shots. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 504748Now, more importantly, where are the pictures that are "not these pictures"? Thanks now I realize they need to be on a better site. Those pics are somewhere else. :-) |

Either agree to only print 250 or so of the print and charge a fair price for your art ($250 x 250) or charge a small fee ($50) as a one-time usage and not let them have any exclusivity. |

Great pics on your album, assuming you are billion earth art. Nice balance, color, and subject matter. Interesting thread. I have been into photgraphy for decades, bought my first Nikon in the late sixties. Never sold a pic though, saving them for something to do when I retire (I did have a poster I produced once and sold at head shops in Hollywood). Keep up the good work, you have a good eye. Do remember though, just a right click, and save image as, and its gone. Be careful where you put your product, and invest in a watermark program, or convert them to flash for the net. |
