If Cheney was dead, they would break the news slowly so as not to shock the financial markets.
This would be step 1.
Step 2 is breaking news that Cheney is in for "emergency surgery"
Step 3 is they announce he is dead. This would not happen until AFTER the markets close for the day.

Vice President Dick Cheney will receive an outpatient procedure later Wednesday to restore his normal hearth rhythm after doctors found a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, the White House said Wednesday.
"During a visit with his doctors this morning, it was discovered that the vice president is experiencing a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart," his office said in a statement.
"Later this afternoon, the vice president will visit George Washington University Hospital for an outpatient procedure to restore his normal rhythm," it added.

The FOX News version reminds me of the story about a wimpy middle aged fellow, never married, who lived with his elderly mother and his beloved cat.
He hardly ever went out of the house for more than a few hours because of his concern for his cat and his mother.
One day, his brother convinced him that he needed a break, and got him to agree to tale a short vacation to Europe.
He would call his brother twice a day to see how cat and mother were doing.
This time he called, his brother said: "Your cat was run over by a car and is dead." In tears, he said: "You could have at least broke this bad news to me gently, like maybe, Your cat was playing on the roof, and fell off. She is at the vet's being taken care of."
Brother says: "OK, sorry..."
Fellow says: "And, how is Mother doing?"
Brother says: "She was playing on the roof..."
