Actually, I understand the inventor of this process does ingest this. The warning is because he's in unchartered territory and no one knows if there are any negative effects yet.

Making Colloidal Gold from Gold Wire
Copyright (c) 2008, W.G.Peters

Purpose:


The purpose of this page is to demonstrate how to make approximately 50 ppm Colloidal Gold from .999 fine gold wire, using an electrolytic process to make AuCl3, and then to reduce the resultant gold chloride to colloidal gold by means of a peroxide reducing agent and potassium citrate stabilizer.

WARNING: This is not meant to be ingested. While this procedure does make gold nanoparticles, the effects of the oxidized citrate ions and residual gold salts may be toxic. Ignore this at your own peril!

Materials:


You will need the following materials.
1) .999 fine gold wire anode, 22 guage, of about 6" to 1 foot in length. Longer lengths will produce less waste if you intend to make a lot of CG
3) Potassium Chloride (KCl)
3) Potassium Citrate (C6H5K3O7).H20 (reffered to hereafter as K-Citratre)
4) 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, (H2O2) food grade.
5) DC Power supply capable of supplying 500ma @ 30volts1
6) 500 ml pyrex beaker
7) Hot plate, bunsen burner, or alcohol burner capable of boiling 250 ml of water.
8) Distilled water.
9) Lab supplies, scale, graduated cylinders, ring stand, etc.
10) Glass stirring rod, to make gold electrode holder (See Fig. 1)2
11) Optional Small plastic wire ties. (See Fig. 1)

Warning:


If you are not experienced working with electricity, get assistance, or do not perform this procedure. While 30 volts dc is not lethal, short circuits can ruin the power supply.

Stock Solutions:


To make the KCl Electrolyte solution, we will weigh 1 gram of KCl, and dissolve it in distilled H20 to make 100 ml of stock solution To make our K-Citrate stock solution, we will weigh out 1 gram of K-Citrate and dissolve it in distilled H2O to make 100 ml of stock solution.

The Electrodes:


Wind about 10 turns or more of the gold wire onto the end of a glass stirring rod. Secure the wire tie tightly to the rod using small wire ties. This provides some protection for the costly gold wire. See Fig. 1. The gold wire may need to be annealed4 to remove its springiness. The electrode in Fig 1. has a surface area of approximately 5.7 sq centimeters.

A plain copper wire works well as the cathode, and may be bent so that it forms a hook allowing it to be hung on the edge of a 500ml beaker.

Power Supply:


The power supply should be able to supply at least 750ma to be safe. While a constant current supply is not an absolute necessity, it does however make the process time consistent and removes some of the variables related to the submerged surface area and distance between electrodes. The power supply used for this experiment was a 30vdc @ 1 ampere unit.

The Process:


Arrange the apparatus so that the beaker is on the hotplate or suspended above the bunsen burner with a ring stand.

Add 250ml of distilled water to the beaker.

Suspend the electrodes in the beaker and bring the water to a boil. Leave the power supply off.

With the power supply turned off, connect the gold electrode to the positive supply terminal, and the stainless steel electrode to the negative. Make sure that there are no short circuits, and that there is no exposed wiring which could cause a high voltage shock. Do not power it up yet.

If you have a magnetic stirrer, put the magnet into the beaker. Make sure the stirrer magnet does not contact either electrode.

Bring water to a boil.

Energize the power source and add 3.6 ml of stock KCl solution to the beaker.

Allow to run several minutes.

Add 2 drops Hydrogen Peroxide to the beaker

Add 4.1 ml of the stock K-Citrate solution to the beaker.

Within minutes, a red tint should start to appear.

When the desired color depth is produced, or no more color change is detected, turn off the power first, then remove the electrodes. Top off the water to restore it to 250ml. You should now have red colloidal gold. Filter, and bottle.

Half Reactions:

Cathode:

6KCl + 6e --> 6K +6Cl- Chloride ion travels to Anode where it combines with gold
6K + 6H20 --> 6KOH +3H2 (which bubbles off as hydrogen gas)
6KOH --> 6K+ +6OH- New hydroxyls journey to anode continuing electrolysis of water.
2Au+++ +6e --> 2Au We don't want this to happen as it merely plates gold onto the cathode
4H20 +4e --> 2H2 + 4OH- This reaction may not happen because of the preference to electrolyze the potassium


Anode:

6Cl- --> 3Cl2 + 6e
2Au +3Cl2 --> 2AuCl3 Gold is liberated as gold chloride
4OH- --> O2 + 2H2O + 4e Oxygen gas is liberated as hydroxyl ions are oxidized


Secondary Reactions:

AuCl3 is known to react with the Cl- of the KCl
- So -
AuCl3 + KCl +H2O --> HAuCl4 +KOH

Reduction Reaction:

4HAuCl4 + 8H2O2 --> 4Au + 16HCl + 2H20 + 7O2

Stoichiometry:

50ppm CG in 250ml water is 12.5mg, or 63.5 microMoles of Au
Since it takes 4 atoms of chlorine to oxidize one atom of gold at the anode and produce HAuCl4, we need 254 microMoles of KCL
To stabilize each Au particle with a citrate ion, we need 63.5 microMoles of K-Citrate
To reduce 63.5 microMoles of AuCl3, we need 127 microMoles of H2O2.

Therefore:

254 microMoles of KCl = .018 gm == 1.8 ml of 1% KCL solution
127 microMoles of H2O2 = .0043 gm == .143 ml of 3% solution (about 2 drops)
127 microMoles of K-Citrate = .041 gm == 4.1 ml of 1% solution

Further Observations:


While the spacing between the electrodes does not affect the reactions, it does alter the amount of voltage needed from the power supply to produce a fixed amount of current. The closer the electrodes are, the lower the voltage needed. The number of turns of wire on the electrodes (submerged surface area) also affects the voltage somewhat; more electrode area requires less power supply voltage for the same current. Both of these effects are to be expected. These variables are cancelled out when using a constant current power supply.

Actual voltage is inconsequential to the electrochemisty. What matters is current (amperes). (See Faraday's Laws) As you can see from the half reactions, it takes 3 electrons to liberate 1 atom of metallic gold. Additional electrons are required for the inevitable electrolysis of water.

As the Au+++ ions enter solution, they migrate to and are pulled to the cathode because of the electric field between the electrodes. If the Au ions reach the cathode, they will be reduced back to metallic gold, which is not what we want. (This is the basic electroplating mechanism). By adding the reducing agent (Hydrogen peroxide, and K-Citrate) at the start of electrolysis, the Au ions have a high probability of finding a molecule of the reducing agent before reaching the cathode. When this happens, the ionic charge is neutralized, and free metallic gold appears in the solution instead of on the cathode. However, a small amount of the Au ions may be reduced at the cathode, causing some loss gold particles.

Note that the potassium atoms are essentially trapped at the cathode. As soon as they are reduced to potassium metal, they immediately react with water to again produce potassium hydroxide which immediately ionizes, allowing the potassium cation to be reduced to metal and start the cycle all over again. This in turn produces a steady stream of hydroxyl ions moving towards the anode to be turned into oxygen gas and water again. At this point, I do not know how to determine the ratio of the potassium cycle to the gold cycle. (If this were known, the exact current vs time for the process could be calculated.)

A similar occurence seems to happen with the Cl- ion at the anode. As soon as the Cl- reacts with gold to produce AuCl3 it would immediately ionize, again producing Cl- ions attracted to the anode. Perhaps this is why so little of the gold actually plates out onto the cathode.

The stoichiometry above assumes all of the chlorine will combine with the gold to produce gold chloride. Experimentation shows that is not so. In fact, it is necessary to at least double the amount of KCl to achieve CG with the color density of a known 50ppm sample produced by reacting commercial gold chloride with citrate per the Turkevich method. Therefore, it must be assumed that the chlorine is sequestered somewhere or it escapes with the oxygen produced at the anode before it can react with the Au.

Sodium salts are normally used for the Turkevich method, and should work the same as the potassium salts used in this demonstration.


Notes:


1) A fixed voltage power supply can be used, but nine volt batteries do not have enough capacity to supply the needed current. Inexpensive constant current power supplies are often sold on eBay, as tattoo machine power supplies, as well as lab supplies. Used electrophoresis power supplies are ideal, as they usually have constant current circuitry, and higher voltages allowing the electrodes to be placed far apart. If possible, and your power supply does not have a built in meter, use a milliameter to measure the current flow and adjust as necessary to stay within the ratings of your power supply.

2) It is not necessary to use the glass rod to hold the gold anode. You can just ball up a couple of inches of gold wire with a 4 inch straight section to connect to the power supply, and hang it from a string. The danger though is that it may inadvertently touch the cathode and short out the power supply.

3) If you don't have the ability to measure small amounts of liquids, 1cc is approximately 15 drops from an eyedropper. Alternatively, make your stock solutions weaker, or make a liter instead of 100ml to make the quantity of chemicals higher and thus easier to measure.

4) If the wire is too springy, anneal it by passing it through the flame of an alcohol lamp to soften it, and let it cool slowly (don't cool it in water). It will then be dead soft.

Don't believe it! Colloidal gold doesn't do shit for your IQ. I experimented with it years ago and have made gallons of it. Waste of time. Colloidal silver on the other hand is good stuff if made and consumed properly. Great for the flu and most infections but not a cure all. Supliment with alicin for added efficacy. C.G. is just hype!

It's the craziest thing, but he swears by the c.s. so much, he keeps on drinking it, even tho' he's this weird blue-grey all over! I'd be interested in knowing what an overdose of c.g. would do to someone...

I am the one who wrote this procedure for making colloidal gold by electrolysis. When I did it, I did not know about any reports concerning increase of IQ. I did it because gold has been a long time remedy for arthritis ( tuberculosis), and because the prices for commercially made CG were astronomically unaffordable.

8 years ago, I took the lymes disease vaccination, and like one third of the population who took the shot, I got arthritis from it. It got so bad I could hardly walk, and the arthritis in my hands have made it impossible for me to work any more (I designed and built conveyor systems). The lymes vaccine also gave me myopathy which makes my muscles weak and hurt all the time. Doctors had no idea how to treat me, and they just blew me off telling me that I had to live with it. I was on my own.

I tried almost every folk remedy I could find to no avail. The CG was pretty much a last resort, and it has helped a lot. As long as I take it every few days (it has a half life of about 8 days in the body) the muscle myopathy goes away. It has not cured my arthritis, but it has stopped the progression of the joint damage. It has also been a great mood elevator. Still, I do worry about toxicity.

Over the last year I have consumed about 1.5 grams of gold, and there has been no adverse side effects. People taking gold injections into their joints have sometimes had side effects from this much gold, including getting gold crystals in their eyes, and occasionally skin discoloration like Argyria. The injections were gold salts, not metallic colloidal gold, and gold salts are known to be toxic. One gold salt (gold thiogluconate) is known to cause diabetes.

Every substance is toxic if taken in great enough quantity, even water. Whether level CG becomes toxic at is an unknown as it has never been explored. Most people think gold is an inert metal, that it will not react with other things but this is not true. It reacts with chlorine which is plentiful in the body. Also, chemical reactions in general occur faster when the surface area of the chemicals increases. The surface area of a milligram of gold nanoparticles is enough to cover a school bus, so I would expect that it is fairly reactive in the body, possibly forming some kind of gold salt. Indeed, if it is truly inert, it should not have any effect at all.

In searching the medical literature, I found references to positively charged gold ions being toxic, but negatively charged gold particles having no toxicity. The method I described gives the gold particles a negative charge. The question is though, does the charge remain when the CG hits the low ph stomach acid. No one knows.

As far as increasing IQ, I cannot say for sure. But I will tell you this: I started taking CG by buying it from someone else who made it by sparking gold electrodes under water with high voltage (thousands of volts). I bought several pints of 50ppm gold. It wasn't until after I took the gold that I figured out the secret to making it at home. It came to me as an intuitive flash. Maybe my IQ did not change, but something is subtly different in my thinking. I will also say that the CG has been a great mood elevator.

I am not advising anyone else to take CG. In fact I advise not doing so unless they have a really good reason. However, I know other people have and have been doing it for a long time. If someone wants to take it for whatever reason, that is their choice.

For me, the choice was between the certainty of being totally incapacitated/disabled by the vaccine, or the possibility of some relief but with the possible side effects from the gold. So far, this has worked out to the good for me.

He used un-distilled water, and added salts to the water to improve electrical action.
