Wheat Withdrawal/Wheat Sensitivity
Anybody ever have a wheat sensitivity and when you stopped eating it you got withdrawal symptoms? It's horrible. It is making me feel really weird...

"Wheat Withdrawal"
by Dr. William Davis, MD

It happens in the hospital every so often: A clean-cut, law-abiding person is hospitalized for, say, pneumonia, kidney stones, knee surgery, etc.

Everything's fine until . . . they're running down the hospital hallway stark naked, screaming about snakes on the wall, accusing nurses of trying to kill him, all while yanking out IV's and monitor patches.

It's called alcohol withdrawal. Alcohol withdrawal can range from tremulousness and sweatiness, all the way to delirium tremens , the full-blown form that leads to disorientation, seizures, fever, even death. Withdrawal can also be associated with a number of chronically used agents, such as sedatives/sleeping pills, pain medication/opiates, among others.

How about wheat?

I wouldn't have believed it, but after witnessing this effect countless times, I am convinced there is such a phenomenon: Wheat withdrawal.

You'll recognize it in someone who previously ate bread and other wheat flour-containing products freely, then eliminates them. This is followed by extreme cravings, usually for bread, cookies, or cake; profound fatigue; shakiness; mental fogginess; blue moods. The syndrome can last for up to one week.

Then, bam! Sufferers of wheat withdrawal report mental clarity superior to their wheat-crazed days, improved energy, decreased appetite and cravings, heightened mood, and, of course, fantastic drops in weight.

Why would removal of wheat from the diet trigger a withdrawal phenomenon? I can only speculate, but I believe that at least part of this response is due to a physical conversion from a glycogen (sugar)-burning metabolism to that of a fatty acid (fat mobilizing) metabolism. People who lived in the up-and-down cycle of craving and eating wheat constantly fed the sugar furnace for years and are enzymatically impaired in fat burning; they've been growing fat stores. Eliminating wheat deprives the body of this easy source of glycogen, forcing it to mobilize fatty acids in the fatty tissues. Sluggish at first, people feel fatigue, mental fogginess, etc. Once the enzymatic capacity for fat mobilization revs up, then these feelings dissipate.

Could it also relate to the opioid sequences apparently present in wheat? I wasn't even aware of this fact until a reader of The Heart Scan Blog, Anne, left this comment :

Wheat protein contains a number of opiod peptides which can be released during digestion. Some of these are thought to affect the central and peripheral nervous systems.

When I gave up gluten, I felt much worse for a few days. This is a very common reaction in those who stop eating gluten cold turkey.

Dr. BG provides a fascinating commentary on the addictive/opioid aspect of wheat addictions in her Animal Pharm Blog .

Whatever the mechanism, I believe it is a real phenomenon. It can, at times, be so overwhelming that about 20% of people who try to eliminate wheat find they are simply unable to do it without being incapacitated. Of course, that might be a lesson in itself: If withdrawal is so profound, it hints that there must be something very peculiar going on in the first place.

Re: Wheat Withdrawal/Wheat Sensitivity
I decided to stay away from wheat after I saw my sister loosing so much weight by not eating wheat. I have had a head ache for days, I felt like my right eye was about to pop out of my head. The last 2 days I have had nausia and I didn't feel like eating at all. I feel better today but a little anxious. I'm glad I found this site. I thought I was sick but now I knew I have been going through wheat withdrawls.

Interesting!

I went on Atkins for a while last year. I did rather well after the first three days. I lost 20-lbs in just a short while, and kept them off all spring and summer. I felt fantastic.

In the fall, finances dictated we eat fewer proteins. I found myself still craving pasta, and since my favorite spaghetti sauce had zero fat grams I thought I'd be fine.

I regained the 20-lbs.

Wheat products and other white foods like potatoes and rice quickly turn to sugar.

Getting off wheat and sugar leads to withdrawal headaches and incredible cravings. Have also had the same problem trying to get off Diet Rite Soda.

Will try again as I need to eliminate the carbs and the soda. But it is not easy and it takes a few weeks to be totally free of the desire for it all.

"Hidden sources of wheat include beer, hot dogs, ice cream, food thickeners, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, natural flavorings, soy sauce and meat and crab substitutes. Deep fried foods, such as french fries, are often cooked along with breaded products in restaurants."

as for beer, I know Guinness Extra Stout and Guinness Draught are wheat-free.... they do have gluten, however (from the barley). Guinness is not suitable for vegetarians though, because they use isinglass (fish by-product).

yes, I used to doubt this, but apparently it's true:

Opioid peptides derived from wheat gluten: their isolation and characterization.

Fukudome S, Yoshikawa M.

Research Control Department, Nisshin Flour Milling Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan.

Four opioid peptides were isolated from the enzymatic digest of wheat gluten. Their structures were Gly-Tyr-Tyr-Pro-Thr, Gly-Tyr-Tyr-Pro,Tyr-Gly-Gly-Trp-Leu and Tyr-Gly-Gly-Trp, which were named gluten exorphins A5, A4, B5 and B4, respectively. The gluten exorphin A5 sequence was found at 15 sites in the primary structure of the high molecular weight glutenin and was highly specific for delta-receptors. The structure-activity relationships of gluten exorphins A were unique in that the presence of Gly at their N-termini increased their activities. Gluten exorphin B5, which corresponds to [Trp4,Leu5]enkephalin, showed the most potent activity among these peptides. Its IC50 values were 0.05 microM and 0.017 microM, respectively, on the GPI and the MVD assays.

it also causes constipation for the same reason that opiates such as codeine and Vicodin, etc. do:

I've cut way down on all grain or sugar based carbohydrates, including wheat. When I eat grains, I lean more toward brown rice and whole grains. I also have begun to cut dairy except for hard cheeses.

I do have cravings but I feel much better!

I get few of my carbs from small amounts of whole grains now but most from fruits and vegetables.

Yeah I had that with corn. Didn't want to leave the couch for a couple of days. Then...had an amazing craving for cashews for a month. Ate them all the time, then found out that that there's something in cashew nuts that is related to something in corn, forgot what it was though.

I totally changed my diet. One of the things I have done is go gluten free. I've been gluten free for just over a month, although a few weeks ago I messed up for a bit. Change takes time but I'm learning how to live without it. Rice bread is available at health food stores for the days you want a sandwhich.

I feel better, too. I'm trying (mostly successful) to be glueten free and vegan. It really is hard because I love pasta and breads and cheeses. That's why I gave it up to force myself to have to eat more fruits and veggies.

I'm feeling a lot healthier.

Wow, Deja Vu.

Yes, I do still eat some wheat, but small amounts of 100% whole wheat. I'm a big pasta lover, and I still make spaghetti, but I use 100% whole wheat pasta from Whole Foods. Their brand isn't like cardboard, and the sauces I make have to be more robust than with white pasta. It's really good!

In the time since I posted my first reply to this thread, my husband has totally gotten on board with the whole foods/whole grains/moderate carbs diet.

He's doing so much better with his fibromyalgia, joint pain and ups-and-downs (he was once diagnosed as bipolar) since he got off that high-glycemic index, starch and sugar diet his family eats!

He eats raw veggies now, and packs his own supplements, and he's so much happier. He's even working out on his own and getting buff!

LOL, maybe they were trying to kill the person, lol.

I believe the supposed wheat sensitivity is more due to meat consumption with wheat aggravation. Animal products are the real issue. Vegans can have wheat grains no problem.
