If you do an "international move" like you might if you were taking a job or retiring to another country, the movers will pack what you tell them to pack. A box of "flatware" could be anything from sterling silver charges and bars to cheap stainless steel flatware. Just label it "flatware" so it's accurate.

If they happened to pack a box labeled "art supplies" you could put a few bars of gold there along with some lost wax casting equipment. Anyone asks and it's your hobby. The coins should be transported in coin holders and passed off as a coin collection. Nothing more. Bring those in your brief case.

The important thing is to not lie on either end. Leaving you are limited to taking about 10,000 in cash per person out of the US. However, you can buy and send to a forgein bank large denomination travelers checks or certified international bank instruments payable to yourself. Call the European Bank, get the managers name and let him / her know you're sending some bonds and such to the bank and ask them to put them in safe deposit until your arrival. Unopened, of course. They will all do so. Especially when you explain that you're relocating to their country as an "expat" and will be opening a business and personal banking relationships as you're getting settled in your new home.

Get your US bank to raise the limit you can pull on your debit card to something much higher than the usual 500/day in cash or 3000 per day in charges. 2500/cash and 10,000 charging is not too much to ask for if you have a long trip planned and you're going to be needing cash for emergencies or purchases of furniture or antiques, etc. Most bankers will do it for a good customer without much hassle. Assumes you have real money on deposit with them, however. Then you can use your debit card to pull $5000 or $10,000 per week out of your US accounts without any hassle at all.

Just don't lie to anyone who inquires. Not a complete lie anyway. BTW: the country you're moving to will check your incoming personal property shipment to a limited degree depending on your circumstances. If it was packed by an international moving company and they prepare a manifest and bill of lading - and you have a "story" that's reasonable - job in the foregin country or move to provence for retirement, etc. - they're not going to bother with you much. Don't go there as a 30 year old single with a whole lot of money and fine furnishings unless you have a trust fund at home to back you up. Dont' look like a drug dealer. Don't look like a crook. Be open. Be nice. Travel with your family if you have one. Cats and kids go a long way to getting you ignored.

We moved to Europe in 1999 and my biggest regret of my life is coming back to the US in 2002. If I'd stayed another year I could have asked for EU citizenship in addition to my US citizenship and then I could have lived anywhere in Europe I wanted to. Now, to go back I have to go in as a retiree or a business owner which will employ a couple of Europeans within two years. And I have to be able to prove I have sufficient income to support me and my family while this is being set up. Not too difficult but it could have ben a lot easier had I stayed in Europe and not come back to the US. But after 9/11 everything was weird and I wanted to be home agin.

With some countries, you risk losing it all by going through customs. Customs agents are thieves in many areas.
