Aside from the fact that an airplane is a hollow aluminum structure, and plenty flimsy compared to similar sized objects, it's not the measurements that count so much here, it's the speed. If the object would totally vaporize before it hit earth, all that energy still has to go somewhere, and humans don't do well absorbing large amounts of energy, of any kind. Pressure waves, heat, seismic, other radiation.

Of course, at those speeds, it takes a fraction of a second to punch through the atmosphere, so even a smallish object of that size is barely going to be affected by friction with the atmosphere. And while a plane might cover the same area during a crash, a stone that size is a bit different deal. Luckily, it will hit it's target so fast nobody will likely realize it, they'll just be gone.
