Diameter 0.044 km
Mass 1.1e+08 kg
Energy 2.3e+00 MT

Calm down doomers , its only 44 meter (less than an half block long).
Its a big plane crash !! Nice fireworks !! but no Doom !!
Nothing to see !! move on !!

Half a block is pretty damned big, huh?
 Quoting: Turtles Know

big enough to take out a few thousand people, or more, depending on the impact site.

Let someone be the first to do some GLP math.
November 22=11+11 so 11/22 is "interesting date."
Familiar with 11? ...the math goes on. Do do the sheeple.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 528244

11/22 is the anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy! the 45th I believe. 4+5=9. So we have 9 11 11 11 1
7's!!!!!

Oh shit. 9+7 1's...9 7 9+7=16=7
Also: the date alone without the number of years
11/22/2008 = 1+1+2+2+2+8=16=7!

Now this: 11/22/1963 1+1+2+2+1+9+6+3 =7!!!!!!

Would the G-7, Friendship 7, John Glenn at 77 in space (to name but a few)...would the 7 crowd pass up such a HUGE iconic date?

I think not.

Aside from the fact that an airplane is a hollow aluminum structure, and plenty flimsy compared to similar sized objects, it's not the measurements that count so much here, it's the speed. If the object would totally vaporize before it hit earth, all that energy still has to go somewhere, and humans don't do well absorbing large amounts of energy, of any kind. Pressure waves, heat, seismic, other radiation.

Of course, at those speeds, it takes a fraction of a second to punch through the atmosphere, so even a smallish object of that size is barely going to be affected by friction with the atmosphere. And while a plane might cover the same area during a crash, a stone that size is a bit different deal. Luckily, it will hit it's target so fast nobody will likely realize it, they'll just be gone.

According to the impact calculator, it will break up a little, but will still land in a relative small area, so most of the force will be felt.

Excuse me, but doesn't it say that the minimum miss distance is .0009? And doesn't that equate to just over 350 feet? That is pretty much a sure hit, is it not?

ok, back from my emergency midnight toilet repair...i see the doom is still feeling the love.... im not sure if the nasa geek was just worried about mom in miami beach because of potential waves, or if he figured the impact point would be florida... miami beach is about 5 feet above sealevel, so if you dropped that chunk of rock from a 747 it might flood her house.....like i said, im about 8 miles inland, and on the 4th floor of a pretty sturdy building, so im not too worried....of course, if it center punched the building, id be fucked, but at 8 miles per second, i wouldnt have alot of time to worry about it.....

Part of the problem though, is we really don't know what happens once things are over a certain size, simply because few really dangerous ones have hit since people figured all this out. Aside from some sheeting, it's always possible a large enough object would simply distribute the heat internally, and otherwise be unaffected during it's brief passage through the atmosphere. We can guess, we can look at past impacts and estimate, but until we see one coming, and can watch it arrive, and examine it's effects, it's guessing at best.

Which really isn't all that comforting, for some reason...

Interesting. I think they are showing nominal misss distance here. What this thread is based on, is Minimal miss distance. I always use this link to find NEO's, as you can manipulate your search.

So true. Its all specualtion at best. We can use all our refference points to determine how this object will react, but in the end, its gonna do what its gonna do, we can only watch it play out.

Check out this link from 2004, it's the same rock.

Toutatis is about 2.9 miles long and 1.5 miles wide (4.6 by 2.4 kilometers). It's a whopper.

It's passing way closer than 2004 but with no fuss.

Your first link worked. I saw Toutatis on the charts, but the Nominal and Minimal distance are the same, and relatively far away from us. XK3, on the other had, has a huge variance between the miss distance, which leads me to believe, they just ar not sure yet.
