Just came across this info through my local permaculture group and thought I would share since it seems like a good thing to know about, just in case it's ever needed. The use of the zeer pot is an ancient technique for keeping food cool without refrigeration.

"A zeer pot is quite simple. It's basically two large earthen pots, one nested in the other. The space is filled with sand and water is added. A damp cloth covers the top. As the water evaporates, the inner pot containing the perishables is kept cool in the same manner that a mechanical refrigerator operates -- water evaporation draws heat from the inner vessel. Water is added twice a day.

You can see from the picture how easy it would be to improvise a zeer with regular flower pots."

Is a good idea but note that all evaporative techniques require a relatively dry atmosphere to work effectively. All I'm saying is that it won't work very well, if at all, in a humid environment.

Dig a deep hole in the ground and cover with a large rock. That will keep those pots nicely chilled. You could also put your cooler down there, too. That's what my mother in law in Norway has at their cabin. Works beautifully.

Many years ago back on the farm (a mountainous wet area) we used to channel water through a pipe from an underground spring via gravity into the milk house and into an insulated storage tank. It would fill with cold water and drain out an outlet, This would keep the milk cans icy cold until the creamery truck came. No electricity required.
A good system that could be applied if similar circumstances exist.

Location here is in "The Endless Mountains" of Northern PA.
We have two seasons, Winter and the 4th of July. Water coming from these rock filled mountains is always cold.
Should add that due to the requirement of constant flow for dairy farming needs, water was collected from the spring in a "water house" uphill from the barn before being sent down.

Can't speak for warmer climates.
