KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- The death toll in Acheh, the region worst hit by last Sunday´s tsunami, may exceed 400,000 as many affected areas could still not be reached for search and rescue operations, Indonesia´s Ambassador to Malaysia Drs H. Rusdihardjo said Thursday.
He said the estimate was based on air surveillance by Indonesian authorities who found no signs of life in places like Meulaboh, Pulau Simeulue and Tapak Tuan while several islands off the west coast of Sumatera had "disappeared".
He said the latest death toll of more than 40,000 in Acheh and northern Sumatera did not take into account the figures from the other areas, especially in the west of the region.
"Aerial surveillance found the town of Meulaboh completely destroyed with only one buiding standing. The building, which belonged to the military, happens to be on a hill," he told reporters after receiving RM1 million in aid for Indonesia´s Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund here Thursday.
Rusdihardjo said there were about 150,000 residents in Meulaboh, which was located 150km from the epicentre of the earthquake while Pulau Simeuleu had a population of 76,000.
The contributions were from several corporate giants.
Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), represented by Chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, gave RM200,000; Guthrie, represented by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Maskan, gave RM200,000; Golden Hope Plantations Berhad, represented by Group Director for Corporate, Legal and Public Affairs Norlin Abdul Samad, gave RM200,000; Maybank, represented by Head of Public Affairs Wan Norhiyati Ibrahim, gave RM200,000 and Sime Darby Group´s Motor Division, represented by Director Yip Jon Khiam, also gave RM200,000.
Ahmad Sarji also handed over a PNB contribution to Utusan´s Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund, which was received by Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Executive Chairman Tan Sri Hashim Makarudin to help Malaysian tsunami victims.
Ambassador Rusdihardjo said a combination of earthquake and tsunami had left 80 to 100 per cent of infrastructure in Acheh province, such as hospitals, health centres, transport and communication networks and homes, destroyed.
"Looking at the scale of destruction, it´s difficult to say when the search and rescue operations can be mounted in all affected areas," he said.
He said rescue efforts were hampered by transportation difficulties and lack of fuel.
Rusdihardjo said that at this time international help, especially in the form of medicines, clean water, food and clothing, were desperately needed by Indonesia to aid survivors in Acheh.
"Now we are worried about the outbreak of diseases such as cholera, the work of disposing corpses and the absence of clean water following the contamination of water sources," he said.
It would take years before the situation returned to normal, he said, adding that the Indonesian government was not able to estimate losses caused by the tragedy as yet.
He expressed his gratitude to Malaysia´s help although the country itself was hit with 66 lives lost so far and property to the tune of millions of ringgit destroyed.
"We are deeply touched," he said.
Rusdihardjo said Indonesia was also seeking Malaysia´s cooperation to mount search and rescue operations from its shores because of the close proximity of the two countries.

TO BE HONEST FHL, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT, THE NUMBER OF DEAD IS THE NUMBER OF DEAD, READING THE MEDIA YOU WOULD THINK INITIALLY 500 DIED AND AS DAYS PASSED MORE AND MORE DIED. 99% DIED THERE AND THEN.
PART OF IT I THINK IS TO COVER UP THE LACK OF REACTION OR RESPONSE, STORIES ABOUT STRUGGLING TO REACH REMOTE AREAS IS BULL. I HAVE DRIVEN INTO THE HEART OF SUMATRA, I DRIVE TO PHUKET ON MOTORWAYS. A QUICK HELICOPTER RIDE WOULD CONFIRM TOWNS MISSING, CITIES MISSING.
YES SOME CAN ONLY BE REACHED BY SEA BUT PLENTY OF GOOD VESSELS AVAILABLE AND COULD HAVE BEEN THERE IN 18 HOURS.

HONESTLY, I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH THE GOVERNMENTS RESPONSE HERE AND I KNOW SOME OF THEM. IN AN INTERVIEW WITH CNN, THE DEPUTY PM IGNORED THEIR QUESTIONS RE DESTROYED VILLAGES AND RESTATED, THE POPULATION HAS BEEN MOVED AND THEY ARE VERY COMFORTABLE.
THEY ARE VERY INSULAR TO SAY THE LEAST. ALSO DONT FORGET THIS COUNTRY IS PERSONA NON GRATA AS FAR AS THE POWERS THAT THINK THEY BE ARE CONCERNED AND FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS AT LEAST HAS BEEN UNDER UNREMITTING ECONOMIC ASSAULT.

 Hi All,
I was part of a Red Cross disaster response team which was sent to Florida after it was struck by four major hurricanes this past October. Actually I arrived after the third one and had to provide mass care during Hurricane Jeanne.
With only about 170 dead and a few hundreds injured, most of the difficulty was lack of food, water, and shelter. Still, it was amazing the lack of inertia, for people to help themselves. Ten days and more later we were still finding people living in mobile homes with the windows blown out, and leaking roofs, without food, or water, electricity, or phones. One family said, "God must have sent you because we been praying for help."
We were working 12 to 16 hours a day, and it was tremendously fatiguing. But we could see that we were making a difference.
I cannot begin to immagine the hopelessness and despair of the villagers who have lost 3/4 or more of the members of their family or village.
Our prayers go out to these people.

THE AGENCIES, CARE, RED CROSS ETC ARE DOING WHAT THEY CAN BUT THEY ARE NOT PREPARED FOR THIS SCALE OF DISATER. I SAW THE FLIGHT TAKE OFF FROM UK WITH EQUIPMENT. WE ARE NOT ON THE MOON HERE, IT CAN BE GOT LOCALLY.
MY MAIN GROUSE IS "GOVERNMENT", THEY SIT BCK, WAIT AND SEE, ASSESS THE SITUATION. THEY HAVE MASSIVE RESOURCES, TROOPS ARE PAID EITHER DIGGING OUT BODIES OR TOILETS IN BARRACKS. MOBILISE THEM ALL NOW.

When the initial reports (that I heard) said up to 20,000, I thought... This area of the world where the population is so concentrated, and being a coast line during peak holiday season...
I figured then it would be in the millions. What a nasty, nasty hit the world took. I just hope this is the end of this kind of shit. It is overwhelmingly sad.

Drilling for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is expected to start in June 2004. The JOI Alliance (Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc., Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and Texas A&M University) has been selected as the IODP Riserless Vessel Systems Integration Contractor. The riserless vessel will be the JOIDES Resolution for the first few years of IODP.
