That didn't sound right-- The Curved Dash Oldsmobile is credited as the first high-volume mass-produced automobile. It was introduced by the Oldsmobile company in 1901 and produced through 1907. 425 examples were produced the first year, 2500 in 1902, with over 19000 built in all. Or you could save the message to tape and drive it to the other computer to be read into it. Now we have 4 year olds sending simple "hi, g-ma luv u." messages to anywhere on earth in mere seconds. For fun compare 1808. |

I do not believe those statistics about the average life span. Most people in the USA, in that time period lived much longer, and in fact in 1958 the old people on my street, were all in there late 90's.. I would listen to stories that they would tell, about their grand folks having it much harder, but they did say that their own parents lived until the 80 to 90 years. I think there is a whole lot of liars spinning the so called miracles of health in this age.. My sister died at age 54, and most of the men I knew growing up are all dead, something is just plain wrong, with the facts put out these days.. |

Babies and children included. In 1908 the infant mortality rate was much higher than it is now. That alone brings the average way down. |

In the N Karelinski village (200 verst N of Kirensk) the peasants saw to the North-West, rather high above the horizon, some strangely bright (impossible to look at) bluish-white heavenly body, which for 10 minutes moved downwards. The body appeared as a "pipe", i.e. a cylinder. The sky was cloudless, only a small dark cloud was observed in the general direction of the bright body. It was hot and dry. As the body neared the ground (forest), the bright body seemed to smudge, and then turned into a giant billow of black smoke, and a loud knocking (not thunder) was heard, as if large stones were falling, or artillery was fired. All buildings shook. At the same time the cloud began emitting flames of uncertain shapes. All villagers were stricken with panic and took to the streets, women cried, thinking it was the end of the world. "The author of these lines was meantime in the forest about 6 verst N of Kirensk, and heard to the NE some kind of artillery barrage, that repeated in intervals of 15 minutes at least 10 times. In Kirensk in a few buildings in the walls facing north-east window glass shook." What was the "pipe" and was was the cloud that had fire shooting out of it? |

Interesting, eh? they call that progress Now I'm off on a tangent, but this is really interesting: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month released 2004 data showing a rate of 13.1 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. For a country that considers itself a leader in medical technology, this figure should be a wake-up call. In Scandinavian countries, about 3 per 100,000 women die, which is thought to be the irreducible minimum. The U.S. remains far from that. Even more disturbing is the racial disparity: Black women are nearly four times as likely to die during childbirth than white women, with a staggering rate of 34.7 deaths per 100,000. The average life expectancy was in the mid fifties in 1908. That is true. Lots of people died as children and many more of illnesses before they were thirty. Most of those who made it to sixty went on to their eighties and nineties, but the average was still in the Fifties because of all of the people who died young. |
