THE YEAR 1908, .. This will boggle your mind
This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1908.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1908 :
************ ********* ********* ******

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles
Of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower

The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per
year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at
the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears
the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and
bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.' ( Shocking? DUH!)

Eighteen percent of households had at least One full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A. !

Now I forwarded this from someone else without typing
It myself, and sent it to you and others all over Canada & U.S.A
Possibly the world, in a matter of seconds!

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
IT STAGGERS THE MIND!!!!!!!!!!!

That didn't sound right--

The Curved Dash Oldsmobile is credited as the first high-volume mass-produced automobile. It was introduced by the Oldsmobile company in 1901 and produced through 1907. 425 examples were produced the first year, 2500 in 1902, with over 19000 built in all.

This is only one model car from one company.

1950, you usually had to have a PhD or at least an MS to even be close to a computer, let alone program one... sending a computer message to another computer required either having it sent via teletype or telepunch which punched out Hollerith cards that had to be feed back in at the new location. Or you could save the message to tape and drive it to the other computer to be read into it.

Now we have 4 year olds sending simple "hi, g-ma luv u." messages to anywhere on earth in mere seconds.

For fun compare 1808.

Just for the record..
I do not believe those statistics about the average life span.

Most people in the USA, in that time period lived much longer, and in fact in 1958 the old people on my street, were all in there late 90's.. I would listen to stories that they would tell, about their grand folks having it much harder, but they did say that their own parents lived until the 80 to 90 years.

I think there is a whole lot of liars spinning the so called miracles of health in this age.. My sister died at age 54, and most of the men I knew growing up are all dead, something is just plain wrong, with the facts put out these days..

In 1708 your mirror screened iPhone talking to another mirror screened iPhone would get you accused of witchcraft and consorting with demons and get you and it burned at the stake. Mirror screened Plasma displayes connected through the internet in video chats would have been called a "magic mirror" and also gotten you and it turned into ashes.

They take the average of all people. Babies and children included.
In 1908 the infant mortality rate was much higher than it is now. That alone brings the average way down.

 Quoting: LifesReflections*

I've always believed that home birth (preferably with a midwife) is a safer option than hospital birth for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. So, I looked up some stats in order to compare the childbirth mortality rates in 1908 with modern day.

In 1908 when 95% of births took place at home, the childbirth mortality rate was 16.3 per 100,000.
[link to www.cdc.gov]

In recent years, though, the U.S. maternal mortality rate has crept back up and is now 15.1 deaths per 100,000 births, according to 2005 death figures.

(2005 was the most recent year I could find numbers for.)

My grandfather was also born in 1888!!!!! He passed away 1978. Ten more years and he would have seen his century. I doubt our generation lives so long. Too much pollution, diseases spread around the world and shot nerves...people live a lot "faster" now than in the 1900's when life was a LOT slower

The most boggling thing of all....Tunguska.

A newspaper clip from an eye witness.

* Sibir newspaper, July 2, 1908[12]

"On the 17th of June, around 9 in the AM, we observed an unusual natural occurrence. In the N Karelinski village (200 verst N of Kirensk) the peasants saw to the North-West, rather high above the horizon, some strangely bright (impossible to look at) bluish-white heavenly body, which for 10 minutes moved downwards. The body appeared as a "pipe", i.e. a cylinder. The sky was cloudless, only a small dark cloud was observed in the general direction of the bright body. It was hot and dry. As the body neared the ground (forest), the bright body seemed to smudge, and then turned into a giant billow of black smoke, and a loud knocking (not thunder) was heard, as if large stones were falling, or artillery was fired. All buildings shook. At the same time the cloud began emitting flames of uncertain shapes. All villagers were stricken with panic and took to the streets, women cried, thinking it was the end of the world. "The author of these lines was meantime in the forest about 6 verst N of Kirensk, and heard to the NE some kind of artillery barrage, that repeated in intervals of 15 minutes at least 10 times. In Kirensk in a few buildings in the walls facing north-east window glass shook."

Now I'm off on a tangent, but this is really interesting:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month released 2004 data showing a rate of 13.1 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. For a country that considers itself a leader in medical technology, this figure should be a wake-up call. In Scandinavian countries, about 3 per 100,000 women die, which is thought to be the irreducible minimum. The U.S. remains far from that. Even more disturbing is the racial disparity: Black women are nearly four times as likely to die during childbirth than white women, with a staggering rate of 34.7 deaths per 100,000.

Go to any graveyard and you can tabulate the death rate for a time and a season. The average life expectancy was in the mid fifties in 1908. That is true. Lots of people died as children and many more of illnesses before they were thirty. Most of those who made it to sixty went on to their eighties and nineties, but the average was still in the Fifties because of all of the people who died young.
