My cat has a huge abscess hole - I can see inside! Vet wants $500. | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 501718 United States 11/03/2008 11:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My beautiful, intelligent cat that has been with me 10 or more years has a terrible wound from an abscess that burst after she got in a fight with a neighborhood kitty: Quoting: KindaGamey[link to www.kindagamey.com] i can look inside the damn thing and see her... meat, or something. (shit, i thought we were just bloodbags.) she is keeping it clean and i gave her antibiotics, no infection, but the damn thing is HUGE and it is not going away. she's cleaning it a lot, maybe it never gets a chance to heal? Anyway, I took her to the vet a month ago before it had burst, they gave me the antibiotic. Then I went in today and showed them the wound and they want $500 for two sutures! Plus they want to drug her up with all their traditional bullshit and we don't want them drugs. So what do I do? (This is my first poll ever. Hope it's worth the money.) That animal has nine lives. Sounds like it needs to use a life line! |
Prof-Rabbit (nli) User ID: 148352 Australia 11/03/2008 11:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah but they are freaking money-grubbers! I can tell. They try and upsize me more than McDonalds does. I just don't feel right about it. Quoting: TunafishSammichesThe only thing that's going to upsize is the size and condition of the wound. Are you really willing to put your cat through infection, tissue necrosis, and many other possible ailments because a website tells you to? For all I care, after you take it to the vet to have it cleaned, stitched, and whatever else, you can stick healing crystals in your ears and dance naked under the moon. Bottom line: You are not qualified to handle this on your own, and you are putting your cat at risk of pain and further infection if you do so. Your cat has given you 10 years of affection, $500 is cheap, either take it to a vet or put it down. Choose wisely, karma is a bitch. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 527576 United States 11/04/2008 12:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've always trusted how God created cats and over time while having several cats at different times.....not only have never kept the cats updated with shots, but two of the cats acquired abcesses from fights, which over time healed themselves. and one was about 2 1/2 inches across, which my daughter, while wearing latex gloves, applied pressure around the exterior of the wound to get most of the infection out... then within a week or so, voila...it was fine and the hair grew back. That's always amazed me too....how the fur falls out around the infected area which keeps it cleaner and exposed to the air. Trust their natural defenses and quite spending so much money on their upkeep. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 320717 United States 11/04/2008 07:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's what I did when I was a poor Democrat. Quoting: Cunning_linguistDrop your cat off at the animal shelter. make sure it's a no kill shelter!!!!!!!! Usually they HAVE TO TREAT WOUNDED ANIMALS AS A PART OF THEIR CHARTER. So tell them "you found a stray". They'll treat him and you can go back in a week or so and "adopt" him. I know I'm a douche for doing this, but I was young, poor and really cared about a sick stray that i had taken in. It worked like a charm. No, that doesn't make you a douche, you did what was best for the cat. You saw he got the care he needed. I volunteered at a shelter, and the real "douches" would just dump the animal and never look back. Animal shelters have funds for this type of thing, and contributions are always needed and appreciated. You did right by him. |

Bottom line, OP, is you are a fucking waste of breath if you do not take your cat to the vet NOW. The fact that you would let your cat suffer because you think vets are scam artists or cost too much speaks volumes about your character. And the rest of you suggesting various treatments need to shut the fuck up. End of thread. |

It slowly closed up from the outside. The vet actually told me that was the best thing to do. The vet said he couldn't sew it up, because it would not be able to drain. Rusty has a scar, but he is fine. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." William Shakespeare |

My cat had the two 2 mammary glands removed, and the vet really botched it. The skin over it died and left a big hole. I prayed because I didn't think it would ever heal. I found your info on colloidal silver, and she is healing. It is like a miracle, and I am so grateful that God guided me to you, and I'm so grateful that people shared what they knew about the silver. Thank you. I'm sure you saved my cat's life. |

Quoting: KindaGameyI'll get the stitches, but I'm going to a different vet. I'm sure I can find cheaper. I hope you went and had this done. Don't wait too long or the cat may have to be put down. The abcess sounds awful and the infection could go all through its body. Ask if it is possible to pay it off on a regular schedule..Most vets would agree. Magdalena |

KindaGamey (OP) User ID: 474302 United States 02/28/2009 12:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's the rest of the story: I went to a different vet and pleaded with him to give me a lower cost solution. He gave me a different antibiotic and told me to call him if it didn't clear up. It did. It cleared up and started healing itself after only a day or two. So, had I shelled out for $500, staples, shaving, and all that garbage I would have not only traumatized the cat, but I would have been out some serious cash. Instead, I only needed to buy a different antibiotic. I know all of you were concerned for the cat and I don't blame you for your knee-jerk, "Just throw money at it!" suggestions, but I'm telling you I got a real shady feeling about this veterinary hospital. They have top notch everything and cater to the rich and just want to pants you every time - nothing to do with the health and safety of the animal. She's fine. I love her. I just got back from a week's vacation and she's all over me like stink. This post pending review. [link to kindagamey.com] |
Mickeyblue User ID: 330969 United States 02/28/2009 12:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If your vet sutures it I imagine he will insert a drain. You want this wound to heal from the inside out. If I were treating it I would a couple of times per day use a syringe and inject some hydrogen peroxide in it whille holding the cat for it to work. Irrigation is quite remarkable. So if you are not going to take the cat for veterinary care you might consider this. The anitbiotics, the cat is licking these away, so they do little unless the wound is located in a manner that you can put a 'collar' one that keeps her unable to lick it. If she is oth4erwise healthy and does not have one of the more resistant pathogens, keeping it irrigated should allow for healing. Some doctors and vets no longer use hydrogen peroixide but many do and if you do not like that try betadine, irrigation. Do not bandage it. It must heal from the inside out or you will have another abcess. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 580429 United States 02/28/2009 12:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hydrogen peroxide is the worst thing for an open wound unless it just happened. It kills beneficial cells and bacteria. Use rubbing alcohol two or three times a day. Keep neosporin or polysporin on the wound. Colloidal silver is something to think about using maybe after you clean it with alcohol. Peroxide will keep the wound from ever healing! I am not a vet, but a vet tech. Taping up the leg to cover the wound would also be beneficial. |
